Based on the idea that human life is made up of qi or essence, Taoism proposes the secret of "immortality": the preservation of essence. "Lao Tzu River Gong Note" said: "If you keep your essence and qi in a disorderly manner, your body will be able to respond to it and be supple." "A man can hold one, so that he can live forever without leaving his body." One is born from the beginning of the Tao, and the essence of Taihe is also. "The essence can regulate the inside of the body, so one must keep the essence and keep it from the body. If the essence of the human body lasts forever, it can live forever. ”

However, Taoism has a solution to this - cultivating to become an immortal. The so-called cultivation is to make one's physical body as light as "qi", and at the same time, to enable one's spirit to live in it for a long time.
In this way, you can "ascend in the flesh" and become immortal immortals. One of the cultivation methods is the so-called "convincing qi". "Convincing qi" means "eating qi", not eating grains, so as to refine the body as light as "qi". It can be seen that the so-called immortality is to cultivate the physical body as light as qi to ascend to heaven, which is really mysterious and mysterious. ”

It can be seen that the Taoist theories of "immortality" and "becoming immortals" are completely based on the concept of qi life.

Taoism's cosmology theory and "immortality" theory are all based on the "qi" view of life. The original meaning of "qi" was originally very simple, that is, the "water qi" that constituted all things in heaven and earth in the primitive water worship.

However, the "qi" of Taoism still has the morphological characteristics of water qi. For example, when Taoism talks about the form of "qi", it is said that it is "clear and invisible" ("Lao Tzu Xiang'er Note Notes"), "The vitality is invisible, turbulent and rumbling, the lying one is the earth, and the lying one is the sky." (Note: "Taiping Jing Hetu Wei.") Only water vapor has such a characteristic of being invisible, intangible, diffuse, and ascending to heaven and earth. It can be seen that the Taoist theory with "qi" as the core actually originates from the qi life concept of water worship. ”

Guard your body carefully, and things will grow themselves. I keep one of them, so I am 1,200 years old, and my form has not declined. It is Gao Dao Guangchengzi who taught the Yellow Emperor's health preservation method, and the Yellow Emperor became a positive result according to this health preservation purpose, and at the same time, according to his cultivation success method, the cultivation realm is divided into three levels, that is, "real person (to the person)", "sage", "sage". Although there are three kinds of differences, they all aim to conform to the fortune of heaven and earth, yin and yang, and take the core idea of having a temperate appetite, having a constant life, and being ruthless to make the form and the god (and) together. ”
In the Spring and Autumn Period, Lao Tzu still followed Guangchengzi's teaching of the Yellow Emperor's health concept of "keeping one place and harmony", and further expounded the way of health preservation in his work "Tao Te Ching".
