7. Smile brightly and warm others
At a banquet in New York, there was a guest who had just received an inheritance. She was so anxious to make a good impression on everyone that she wasted a lot of money on sable coats, diamonds, and pearls. But she didn't do much to her face, and her expression was sour and selfish. She did not realize that, in fact, every man paid attention to the expression of a woman's face more than the clothes she was wearing.
Charles Scober, a senior assistant to Steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, told me that his smile was worth $1 million. He may have just said it casually, because Scober's character, his sharpness, and his attractive talent were all reasons for his success. And one of the most appealing factors in his personality is his touching smile.
Actions speak louder than words. A smile means "hello", "I like you", "you make me feel happy", "I am always happy to see you".
That's why dogs are so popular. How happy they were to see us, they almost jumped out of their shells. Therefore, we will also be happy to see them.
There's an insincere laugh that doesn't fool anyone. We know that kind of laughter is mechanical and annoying. I'm talking about the kind of smile that comes from the heart and gives people a warm smile. It's that smile that counts.
A personnel manager at a major New York department store said he would rather hire a girl with a cute smile who didn't finish middle school than a doctor of philosophy with a cold face.
Dale Carnegie encouraged thousands of businessmen to spend a week training to smile at every moment before returning to the workshop to talk about the results. How's that going? Let's take a look at a letter from William Steinha. He is a member of the New York Stock Exchange. His letter provides us with a very representative example.
"I've been married for more than 18 years, and during that time, from the time I got up in the morning until I went to work, I rarely smiled at my wife or said a few words to her, and I was the most sullen person on Broadway," Steinha said in the letter. ”
"Since you asked me to make a conversation based on the experience I had gained with a smile, I decided to give it a try for a week. So, the next morning, when I was combing my hair, I looked at my sad face in the mirror and said to myself, 'I'm going to sweep away all the sadness on my face today.'" You have to smile, start smiling now. As I sat down for breakfast, I greeted my wife with 'Good morning, dear' and smiled at her. ”
"You said she might have been taken aback. You underestimate her reaction. She was simply confused and shocked. I told her that you would get used to my attitude in the future. It's been two months now, and in the past two months, our family has gotten more happiness than ever before. ”
"Now when I go to work, I smile and say 'good morning' to the building's elevator manager, I smile and greet the guard at the entrance of the building, I smile when I exchange change with the cashier of the subway, and I smile when I stand at the exchange and smile at people who have never seen me smile."
"I quickly noticed that everyone smiled at me. I treat those who are full of grumbling with a pleasant attitude. I listened to their grumblings and smiled, and the problem was easily solved. I find that smiling brings me more income and more money every day. ”
"I share an office with another agent. He was a very likable young clerk, and when I told him about the philosophy of living in the world that I had recently learned, I was very happy with the results. He admits that at first he thought I was a depressed person, and it wasn't until recently that he changed his mind. He said that when I smiled, it was full of kindness. ”
"I also got out of the habit of criticizing others. I now only appreciate and praise others, and do not despise others. It all really changed my life. I became a completely different person, a very pleasant person, a richer person, content in terms of friendship and happiness - and that's what really matters. ”
Don't forget, this letter is written by a stockbroker who has traveled all over the world and makes a living trading securities and stocks on the New York side-of-the-counter, a line that is so difficult to do that almost 99 out of every 100 fail.
If you're not good at smiling, then pay attention to two things: First, force yourself to smile. If you're alone, force yourself to whistle, or hum a little tune to show that you seem to be pleasant, it's easy to make you happy.
Franklin Bateger, the third baseman on the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and now one of the nation's most successful insurance salesmen, said he discovered many years ago that a person with a smile would always be welcome, so he would always stop for a moment to think about the person he had to be grateful for before entering someone's office, and then walk in with a genuine smile.
He believes that this simple technique has a lot to do with the great success of his insurance pitch.
Read this piece of advice from Al Habard - but remember, reading it won't help you unless you apply it:
"Whenever you go out, you should keep your chin up and head high so that your lungs are filled with air; Soak up the sun, greet friends with a smile, and exert strength with every handshake. Don't worry about being misunderstood; Don't waste a minute thinking about your enemies. Try to be sure in your heart what you like to do, and then with a clear direction, you will go straight to achieve it. Think about the meaningful things you love to do, and as the years go by, you will find yourself consciously in the hands of the opportunities you need to fulfill your hopes, just as a polyp takes what it needs from the tide. Imagine in your heart the honest person you want to be. Wise, capable people, and this kind of thinking will make you transform into that ideal person all the time...... Thought is supreme. Maintain a correct outlook on life - courageous, honest and cheerful. Thinking correctly is equivalent to creating everything from hope; And every sincere prayer will be fulfilled. What we think in our hearts, we become. Roll up your jaws and hold your head high, we are the God of tomorrow. "The most intelligent generation of Chinese, who see things in the world very well, have a motto that we should remember and write on our hats, that is, "Harmony makes money (people who do not have a smiling face in their life cannot do business)".
Speaking of doing business, Fletch offers us a bit of practical philosophy in one of his Christmas advertisements for Oppenheimer and Carlin.
Here's the full text of the ad:
The value of a smile at Christmas
It doesn't cost anything, but it creates a lot of results.
It satisfies those who receive it, without impoverishing those who give it.
It happens in a split second, but it will give people memories forever.
No one is too rich to not need it, and no one is too poor not to have it.
It creates happiness for families, builds goodwill in the business world, and makes friends feel cordial greetings.
It gives rest to the tired, light to the depressed, and hope to the sad.
But it has nowhere to buy, nowhere to ask for, nowhere to steal, because it has no practical value until you give it to others.
If our clerks are too tired to give you a smile during the last minute of Christmas rush shopping, can we ask for a smile?
Because, people who can't give others a smile need their smile the most.
So, the easy way to make a good impression is:
Smile.
