Chapter 58: The Palace Carpet (4)
Today, when the wind of trendy home decoration is higher and higher, the traditional handicraft carpet itself contains a strong traditional cultural atmosphere, making it have a natural home beautification function, not to mention the art collection value it contains.
The development of society not only brings new tools to the traditional palace carpet craft, but also provides some new creative elements. The patterns of Beijing palace carpets are becoming more and more diverse, and some Western modern paintings have also been incorporated into the design of palace carpets.
It can be said that the future of the long-standing palace craft is full of brightness, as long as our palace carpet artists continue to open up new ideas, and continue to inject fresh blood into this traditional craft, then the long artistic tradition of Beijing palace carpet will continue to be inherited.
After the Republic of China, the carpet industry developed rapidly. According to the "Beiping City Industry and Commerce Overview", in 1916, the carpet practitioners in Beijing established the Carpet Industry Chamber of Commerce in Donghua City, outside Chongwenmen, and there were only more than 70 members at that time.
By 1931, the membership of the Chamber of Commerce had increased to more than 220, employing 7,400 people. At this time, Beijing became an important production area of Chinese carpets, and Chinese carpets became one of the important export crafts.
While exporting, "palace carpets" also frequently participate in expositions held by various countries. In 1900, Beijing carpet won the gold medal at the Paris World Exposition in France. In 1904, the United States held the World Exposition in St. Louis, and the Beijing carpet won the award again in the competition, so Beijing's "palace carpet" became famous abroad.
Beijing carpet production was in short supply for a while, and many practitioners began to set up enterprises in Tianjin, so Beijing's "palace carpet" skills also spread to Tianjin. After the 1920s, even some enterprises in Shanghai began to imitate Beijing carpets for export.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, in January 1956, Beijing No. 1 Carpet Factory was established as a public-private partnership. In the 80s of the last century, Beijing's carpet industry entered its heyday. At that time, the Beijing Carpet Company had 11 factories and more than 5,000 employees.
But it was also during this period that a large number of machine-made carpets began to appear, and the all-handmade "palace carpets" were greatly affected. After entering the 1990s, the original eight state-owned carpet factories in Beijing closed down one after another, leaving only one old factory to insist on weaving handmade carpets, and a large number of technicians who could weave handmade carpets were lost.
In order to preserve the "palace carpet" technique, in 2008, the "palace carpet" technique was included in the intangible cultural heritage of Beijing. This year, the State Council listed it as a national intangible cultural heritage.
In September 2002, Beijing promulgated the "Measures for the Protection of Traditional Arts and Crafts", which had a significant impact and promoted the development and revitalization of Beijing's traditional arts and crafts and Beijing palace carpets. In order to rescue the art of Beijing palace carpet, with the joint efforts of the government and folk artists, in 2008, the "palace carpet" technique was included in the intangible cultural heritage of Beijing.
With the development of history, the ancient craft of Beijing palace carpet is no longer an exclusive tribute to the royal family, but has gradually been integrated into modern life.
Beijing Palace Carpet, that is, the carpet used in the court, also known as the Guanfang Carpet, is one of the famous "Eight Uniques of Yanjing". In order to meet the needs of rulers and imperial relatives, the central government of the Tang Dynasty set up institutions such as "carpet envoys" to manage the production and procurement of carpets throughout the country.
The carpet weaving technology of the Yuan Dynasty was introduced into Beijing, and the Guanfang carpet weaving workshop was set up. Because of its firm weaving and soft blanket surface, it won the favor of the royal family, and the palace carpet got its name from this. The patterns, colours and weaving of the carpet are as strict as the hierarchy of the carpets, which are very different from those of carpets around the world.
According to the record of the "Great Yuan Felt Gong Wu", the Yuan Dynasty Chengzong Dade two years of the Ministry of Industry was ordered, in the Dadu Qingta Temple for the court to weave carpets, in the size of the carpet, dyes, wool dosage and other aspects have strict regulations and requirements, has been for the emperor's bedroom to make five carpets, a total area of 992.83 square feet, the list of materials listed in the white, green, black wool more than 990 catties, a variety of plant dyes, accessories more than 1200 catties.
There are more than 3,200 catties of firewood, more than 7 buckets of vinegar, many materials, and a large scale, which can be seen. Beijing, the capital of the Yuan Dynasty, is an important area for the convergence and integration of Chinese folk arts, the emergence and innovation of the Chinese nation, where literati gather, all kinds of arts flourish, the vicissitudes of the imperial capital of the six dynasties and the fusion of multi-ethnic culture, forming a unique Beijing cultural landscape, and the palace carpet has also become a handicraft product with rich regional characteristics and court characteristics in Beijing.
After the establishment of the Ming Dynasty, the imperial court took over the Yuan Dynasty's government-run carpet weaving institutions in Dadu, set up government-run carpet workshops in Beijing, Xinjiang, Tibet and other places, and produced a batch of high-quality official carpets for the Forbidden City.
