The LTTE was founded in 1976 as a result of political instability, economic difficulties and social injustice in Sri Lanka.

The LTTE has existed for so many years, even controlling a third of Sri Lanka's territory at one point, and it has a great influence internationally, with a steady stream of people joining its ranks and swearing allegiance to it, and at its peak the ranks grew to tens of thousands. It has an impact that represents the interests of some people in Sri Lanka that it would not have been able to sustain for so many years.
