Technical and historical record:

After successfully stealing four Gundam prototypes from the United Earth Forces, ZAFT's technicians researched them and incorporated technologies such as the Relative Transfer Armor and Beam Sword into their Mobile Suits. After obtaining these new technologies, ZAFT also built three Gundams of their own under the orders of their leader, Patrick Sarah. However, these new mobile suits incorporate a very dangerous technology: neutron interference cancellers. ZAFT originally developed neutrons* to prevent the use of nuclear weapons by the Combine, but this also meant that mobile suits had to be supplied with short-lived battery energy packs. After the development of neutron interference eliminators, mobile suits could use nuclear fission reactors as energy, which made it possible to use relatively transferred armor almost without limits. Unfortunately, the neutron interference canceller fell into the wrong hands like Pandora's box.

One of the Gundams built by ZAFT is the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam. Freedom Gundam equips its HiMAT (High Mobility Aerial Tactics) with a variety of powerful weapons. One of these weapons is a pair of "Balaena" plasma beam cannons that are attached to the wings and rotated to the shoulder when used. Another of the main weapons of the Freedom Gundam is a pair of "Xiphias" railguns fixed to the sides of the hips. Other standard weapons include the Vulcan cannon in the head, two beam swords, and a beam rifle. The Freedom Gundam can also be made more powerful by using a number of support weapons: the Meteor Support System. This mobile weapon platform is specially designed for the Freedom and ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam, and is usually attached to the hull of the support ship Eternal. Equipped with Meteor, the Freedom Gundam can use a variety of cannons and a large number of missile launchers, along with two high-energy beam swords, to deliver lightning-fast attacks to enemies.
