Reading the Reader: Essays on the Australian novel "The Thorn Bird".
1. Inscription
Say a few words about this novel and write it as an essay.
I used to read books, but after reading them, I was very keen on writing casual and commentative texts. Because of his passion for writing about this kind of thing, which is called "wordplay", he was once ridiculed for doing the "most boring" thing. At that time, I seemed to care a lot about other people's criticism and criticism, so after that, I tried to do as little or no as possible. Despite this, my habits are still there, and I always can't help but itch, and I always want to write random feelings and comments after reading books.
I rarely think about the changes and changes in the surrounding personnel, and I don't bother to think about it. Whenever I have free time, I always consciously or unconsciously think about the words that have passed my eyes.
The Australian novel "The Thorn Bird" has been read.
After reading the novel, if you repeat the story synopsis and content plot of the novel here, it will be really "the most boring" thing. However, I know that I do not have the ability to elevate the words written after reading this novel to the level of so-called theories and interpret them with the "framework" that so-called experts and scholars are accustomed to.
Tibetan clumsiness is a virtue that China has preached since ancient times. I think that not being ugly may be more or less implicit.
Therefore, all I can say about this novel is only superficial opinions, and perhaps these superficial opinions are only in the rut.
However, if I write these words only to express my "shallow views", then it is not my intention at all.
This is something I must seriously explain.
2. Scatter one
The classic line in the novel that I can remember is what the man said to "Silk":
"If I don't want to marry you, I won't want you."
The "want" here can be seen by a discerning person who knows what he is talking about. Probably there is no need for "discernment", and most adult men and women will understand what he is talking about at a glance.
What do you "want" for? Of course, it is not property, and in the mind of a normal man, what he "wants" is nothing other than the body, and there will be no other deep meaning here.
If I were to describe this in the words of a male writer, I would say that it is probably just a high-sounding lie. However, these words came from the hand of a female writer. So, I have to say, it's probably just the naïve fantasy, the beautiful dream, the sweet ideal of a kind woman.
In real life, whether it is the past, present, or future, whether it is the East, the West, or anything else, there may be people like men who pursue "silk", but after all, there are very few. For most women, such a man, just think about it, dream of it, if you want to meet them in person, I am afraid that even if you are a "white boy", you may not have such an opportunity, even if you have such an opportunity, you may not be able to successfully combine and grow old together.
Still, I express my sincere appreciation for such lines from the author, just as I appreciate the beautiful words of the man who pursues "silk".
Perhaps a big reason why I was interested in this novel is precisely because of the obvious characteristics of this novel, that is, the undisguised and never pretentious characteristics between the lines: femininity and the humanization of female feelings.
3. Scatter two
The overflowing lust is like a river that sometimes drowns a person.
The overflowing lust is like that heavenly fire in the novel, which sometimes consumes a person.
It seems completely impossible to be able to flow through the river of lust, to be able not to be burned beyond recognition by the fire of lust.
Based on the above understanding, I always feel that the humane and feminine characteristics or tendencies in the novel sometimes become a burden to the novel.
Like all double-edged swords, the natural femininity of the novel will simply move me, and will make me appreciate the delicacy of the author's brushstrokes; The humanity embodied in the novel made me see the tolerance of people in Western culture, and let me see the true expression of human nature. This is the good side of the novel that is humanized and feminine to me.
But at the same time, the other side of femininity and humanity seems to me to have a negative effect. This negative effect has caused what I consider to be the "flaw" of the novel: for the sake of "reunion", it seems far-fetched to make people feel that the development of the plot in the novel is a bit far-fetched; In addition, except for a few main characters in the novel, the other characters have very vague personalities, and they have almost become insignificant ornaments.
You might say that the non-main characters in the novel don't need to be inked too much. However, it must be clear that there is no logical relationship between the amount of ink and the fullness of the character's personality. In Chinese novels or other literary works, there are many non-major characters who have not been written much, but have distinct personalities.
4. Scatter three
The path taken by "Mei" is actually a remake of the life journey of her mother "Fei". In this novel, all the vague deeds and unclear images about the mother "Fei" are clarified and plumped up by the author of the novel in the description and description of his daughter "Mei".
Rather than telling the lives of three women, it is better to say that the novel only portrays two women, because "Fei" and "Mei" can be combined into one, in my opinion. "Silk" actually has the shadow of his mother and grandmother, but in the author's pen, "Silk" is still different in general, so she can become a character in the novel independently. Just looking at the characters, we can also see the limitations of this female writer's thinking.
From my critical point of view, the character or personality of "Silk" is not so much a rebellion of the character in the novel against the inherent conditions of the environment in which he lives, but rather a rebellion that is deliberately caused by the author of the novel. Why? Because, if "Silk" inherits the character of his mother and grandmother, then the storyline of this novel can only continue to perform pale repetition. The result will be that the novel will be trapped in an infinite loop, so that it cannot be ended or ended.
As mentioned before, the lives of three women will only become an account of a woman's life story in the future, which will not only greatly compress the space of the novel's era, the surrounding environment and personnel of the novel's characters, but also greatly reduce the readability of the novel itself.
For example, if you are watching a story about a person, the life experience, story development, and plot development of the first person in this story are very fascinating and make you like it very much; In the same story, there is a second person in it, and everything about this second person is no different from the first person, but the name has been changed, and you will probably be interested in it immediately; Again, there is a third person in this story, and this third person continues to repeat everything that the first two people do, and guess you will get bored to the extreme.
In this novel, the kind of repetition mentioned above is not just "Fei", "Mei", and "Silk". This kind of repetition is also reflected in "Ji" and "En".
The image of "En" is only to supplement the whole of this person that has not been described in the novel for more than 20 years. After the twenties, everything about "Ji" will probably be what will happen to "En" next. If so, the character will enter into the vulgarity of repetition and cycle. Therefore, the author came up with a solution, and the solution was to let "En" die young.
In order to illustrate my views and opinions, my above account may be simple and dry.
But as a clever and great novelist, the author of this book naturally uses a lot of thought in the process of dealing with "En" and "Ji", for example, the novelist uses the plot as vivid as possible; For example, the novelist tries to arrange events that make sense; For example, novelists add more of their own observations and perceptions of life in the process......
Although, everything in the novel seems to the average reader and the general public to be seamless. However, these small flaws that do not hide their flaws seem to continue to work the fire if they want to escape the deep investigation of the creators, avoid the criticism of critics, avoid the calmness of the eyes of the law, and break free from the profundity of the eyes.
5. Scattered four
Fiction, naturally, cannot be equated with reality. However, a life novel that is completely detached from reality must be a failure.
Novelists are trying to paint a picture of real life. We can't force this picture to be an untouched reproduction of real life. If you have to force it so much, it will also seem very naïve and ridiculous. Why can't that, because fiction is, after all, a work of literature.
However, for novels whose content is related to real life, if the reader cannot see the shadow of real life in it, the reader will be at a loss, and often have a sense of being out of reach, so that they will not be able to put themselves in their shoes or empathize with them, because everything in the novel is completely unrelated to themselves, and there will probably be some separation from reading. For novels that are also based on real-life themes, if readers can't see a portrayal of real life and an on-demand understanding that is higher than their own thoughts in the process of reading...... This novel seems to be just recreating life, and indeed it is, many times, many of the reader's emotions in real life, such as ideals, disappointment, compassion, kindness, malice, and murder...... and so on, it cannot be sublimated, and the spiritual pleasure cannot be enjoyed. This pleasure is not only positive and happy feelings such as music, joy, and love, but also negative and sad feelings such as bitterness, sadness, and pain.
Some people say that it comes from life and is higher than life, and this is not unreasonable.
Since novels based on real-life themes originate from life, there must not be too many that go against common sense, rebellion, or common sense. Of course, this demand is confined to novels that describe life that most people are familiar with.
If the novelist deliberately violates common sense, rebellious common sense, or perverse to common sense because of his own limitations, the novelist will either be fooling the reader for a fool, or the author himself has already written to the end of Jiang Lang's talent.
6. Scattered five
In this novel, most of the author's humane descriptions or tendencies, consciously or unconsciously, make me full of praise and genuine admiration. However, the author's account of the many sons of "Fei" seems to me to be a little unkind.
In order to end this family, the author seems to have deliberately written these sons of "Fei" one by one like the castrated flocks of sheep. This is really unacceptable.
If the boss released the energy in his body in irritability and violence, and exhausted his youth in prison, his state of "castration" is barely understandable.
Sorry, I don't remember very clearly! If the eighth is still the seventh, it is because a bullet in the war lost a man-the root of life, his desirelessness still makes sense. Although the words are ugly, he was really "castrated" by the war.
In addition to the two mentioned above, we can explain it ourselves, and the other sons' ruthlessness and lack of marriage are completely unreasonable and cannot be justified. Could it be that they fell for the witch's trick?
In the face of my doubts, I wonder how the novelist will explain it?
In my humble opinion, there is only one reason, and it is very simple, the novelist is just to finish off the family. Of course, it's not that this family can't be finished, but it's over, and it should be finished so that people feel logical.
All this is too inconsistent with common sense, logic, and reasonableness.
As mentioned earlier in this article:
The overflowing lust is like a river that sometimes drowns a person.
The overflowing lust is like that heavenly fire in the novel, which sometimes consumes a person.
In this novel, "Ji" is a man who has given himself to God, whose teachings call for abstinence, who worships God so much that he is not immune to the lusts of the world.
The eight or nine sons of "Fei" are all the same, ruthless and desireless, is this possible? Is it reasonable?
In the novel, "Pa" is a normal man; "Ji" is a normal man; The bishop does not know if it is a normal man, at least, he understands a normal man; "May's" husband is a normal man; "En" turned into smoke and ashes before he could become a man, and according to the reasoning of the whole novel, if it was "the year of the holiday", he must also be a normal man.
Just kidding: I'm a man, and I can't say how well I know men, but I at least know a little bit about myself, at this point.
7. Scattered six
Flaws are not hidden, and most of the content of the novel is still worthy of praise and must be affirmed.
We are all striving for perfection, so it is inevitable that the author of the novel will be a little demanding, but it must be clear that this kind of demand, without malice, is just a well-intentioned criticism.
A few words about the way the novel is narrated.
If the narrative of the novel is in the first person, the author's emotions will be reflected in this first-person verbal action, as is often the case in autobiographical novels. For the time being, I will call this narrative self-narrative.
In contrast to self-narration, another way of narration can be the narrative of the other. The characteristic of the narrative style of the other is that the novel is written in the form of storytelling, and all the characters in the book are the objects of the author's narration.
The narrative of this novel is what I call the narrative of the other.
My view on narrative fiction is that the judgment of right and wrong, good and evil in fiction should be fair, and it doesn't seem good if it's too emotional.
Because, if the author blindly judges the subject of his story emotionally and emotionally, the following problems will arise:
First, it seems to be a question and distrust of the reader's judgment.
Second, it will affect the reader's judgment of the characters in the book.
Third, if you make the reader feel that they are being led by the nose, the reader will be very uncomfortable.
Fourth, the author has always expressed his emotionality in the strong love and hatred of the subject of the narration, which will make people doubt the author's rationality and fairness.
In my opinion, the narrative of the other should maintain a rational and fair attitude as much as possible.
From this point of view, the author of this novel has something that I find difficult to accept. For example, the author has a very obvious disgust for the description of the old lady: calling her an "old spider" and writing about her death as disgusting and horrible.
According to my thoughts, death is disgusting and horrible, and as a requirement for the plot of the novel, it can be handled in this way. However, it is unfair and even unreasonable to deliberately scandalize this character with antipathetic brushstrokes.
Is the old lady really that disgusting? As far as the events in the novel are concerned, it seems that this is not the end of it. It's just that the author, who has been in a mood, is forcing the reader to dislike the old lady in the meanness of the text, which doesn't seem to be good.
