Volume 1 - Showers Chapter 99: Their Respective Battlefields (2)

Alicia Mikhail Blu's diary:

Regor Mendel was a gifted scholar! Today I continue to read Mr. Mendel's paper "Plant Hybridization Experiments".

In order to illustrate the correctness of his theory, Mr. Mendel's paper used the pea as a crop for observations.

Mr. Mendel put forward two basic generalizations for his theory: the first is that all plants follow the law of separation of "talents" when they reproduce their offspring, and the second is that the offspring of all plants follow the law of free combination of talents when they inherit the "talents" of their ancestors.

I mainly watched the law of separation of "talents" today, which is not easy to understand.

Peas have some stable, easily distinguishable traits, which are in line with Mendel's requirements. The so-called trait refers to the general term for the morphology, structure, and mana origin of the organism. In his hybrid experiments, Mr. Mendel was engrossed in studying the laws of 7 pairs of relative traits. The so-called relative traits refer to the different types of manifestations of the same trait of the same species, such as pea flower color is divided into red and white flowers, seed shape is divided into round grains and wrinkled grains, and some inheritance abilities affected by the origin of mana, such as increased yield and rapid ripening, etc.

For the sake of convenience and facilitating the analysis and research, he first studied only the transmission of one pair of relative traits, and then observed the transmission of multiple pairs of relative traits together. This method of analysis is one of the reasons why I think Mr. Mendel has been able to successfully support his theory.

The method of experimentation carried out by Mr. Mendel was mainly the "hybridization test method". He used purebred high-stemmed peas and short-stemmed peas as parents for cross-pollination between their different plants. The results showed that the first generation of plants obtained by their crossings showed tall stems, regardless of whether the tall stem was used as the female parent and the short stem was used as the male parent, or the tall stem was used as the male parent and the short stem was used as the female parent. That is, for this pair of relative traits, the traits of the first generation of plants can only show the trait of one of the parents, the tall stem, while the trait of the other parent, the short stem, is not expressed at all in the first generation of plants.

For example, when a purebred safflower pea and a white-flowered pea were crossed, the first generation of plants were all safflower peas. Because of this, Mendel called the traits that the first generation of plants were able to exhibit, such as tall stems and safflowers, as dominant traits, and the traits that the first generation of plants failed to exhibit, such as short stems and white flowers, were called recessive traits. Mendel's crosses with the other 5 pairs of common peas and the 8 pairs of relative traits of peas affected by mana origin all had the same results, i.e., they all had dominant and recessive traits that were easily distinguishable.

In Mr. Mendel's hybrid experiment mentioned above, since only one of the relative traits - the dominant trait was exhibited when the first generation of hybrids was produced, did the other trait of the relative trait, the recessive trait, disappear? Can it be expressed? With these doubts in mind, Mr. Mendel continued his work on hybridization.

Mendel pollinated itself with the tall peas of the first generation of the plant, and then sowed the seeds of the second generation of the second generation of peas the following year to obtain the pea plants of the second generation of hybrids, and the result was two types: one was a tall pea (dominant trait) and the other was a short-stemmed pea (recessive trait), that is, two different manifestations of a pair of relative traits - tall stem and short stem traits. Mendel's doubts were relieved, and he called this phenomenon the phenomenon of separation.

Mendel also did the same hybridization experiment on 12 other pairs of relative traits, and the results were the same—including those affected by mana origin.

Thus, Mr. Mendel proposes that the inheritance of a "gift" is influenced by the talent of the "parents", and that the same talent manifests itself in two origins. This is simply amazing, not only plants, but also us humans and all kinds of powerful beasts and monsters for the inheritance of the "talent" of offspring.

"Okay, then I'll tell you what I think." Gvir swept the clutter off the conference table to the floor, picked up a large roll of high-precision hand-drawn maps made of refined lambskin, and spread it out on the table.

Gvir pointed to the location of the logging fortress and asked, "Lord Griffinhardt, I listened to your description and added a little judgment and calculation, you should be fighting the army of Tangnis in this area, am I right?" As he spoke, he drew a circle with his finger over an area of the map.

Sandos and Babud hunched over to take a look, and sure enough. "That's right, I think it's probably this area, you calculated it based on our pace? That's too accurate! I remember this huge hillside. Babud was surprised.

At first, he didn't think much of the young man. It's just a second son, and it's good not to be a waste. That's what he started thinking. However, when he saw Gvir dispatching the soldiers on Lady Elpara's orders, his senses changed slightly. What a nice young man! But after all, he is still young, and when it comes to the issue of fighting, it may be more on paper! However, it is a rare outstanding talent among young people, as far as the second son is concerned. ’

By this time, though, he had completely changed his mind about the young non-heir. In fact, old Griffinhardt also had this intention, 'The big-tailed wolf can really surprise me, not only does the territory run well, but also has many more cards than when Lady Svertana was in power, and his military strength has been greatly enhanced. The main thing is that the children that Slava actually gave birth to are all excellent, which is really unfair. Not to mention that this young man is the second son, even if you get some big aristocratic family to be the heir - at least 10 times stronger than that waste son of Gagett. ’

"Yes, Lord Griffinhart, General Babud. Not only that, but I judge the location of your battle based on the topography of this forest. To be honest, I'm too familiar with the Mist Forest! I have lived in this land for five years, and I know far from it, the forests provide the roads for armies, the lakes that supply water, and the territory of all kinds of powerful beasts. After saying this, Geville raised his eyelids and looked at the astonished people, and then continued: "You are fighting here, but I judge that you have rested and prepared in this position, right?" ”

"Oh! Giveville, if you are accurate, then Master Griffinhardt, you are mistaken. Elpala said.

"That's right, I was careless, it wasn't a mistake, he was a fatal mistake - it was a tuyere." Sandos said regretfully.

"The wind takes away the smell of griffons and follows the air currents in the forest, exposing your location to the Tangnis mongrel. I have to say, I admire the bravery of your army, and if I were attacked here by twice as many elite infantry as me, I would probably have barely escaped with 1,600 men. Giver said with great admiration.

Old Griffinhardt hurriedly threw a look at Violeta, signaling him not to expose the existence of the caster legion. Violetta understood, and in order to hide the embarrassment of saying something but not saying it, she raised her hand and brushed the hair from her forehead.

"We're lucky, and the actual forces that are chasing us aren't all of them - Napolion only has some of its men in pursuit, so we're fairly organized." General Bappd made eye exchange with his master, and hurriedly took over.

Gvir was a little puzzled by the strange behavior of the few people, so he cast an inquiring glance at Elpara, who curled the corners of his mouth with a contemptuous smile, raised his head and signaled that Gvir should not care and leave it alone, and continued.

Geville scratched his scalp and continued: "Therefore, I judge that the enemy will arrive at the logging fortress three days later. The enemy will definitely cut down trees to make siege equipment - they can't take all the siege equipment with them, at most some parts to assemble in the position. We can send a cavalry unit out of the city in advance to lay an ambush, and when they attack the city, they can kill from behind, directly destroy the sappers and siege equipment, and also kill and wound the enemy's small number of archers. Three days later, General Jon's reinforcements arrived. The Tangnis mongrels are in a hurry to storm the city before they reach the Logging Fortress, they come from afar with tired soldiers and may not be able to adapt to the night vapour in the Mist Forest. Therefore, after we destroyed the enemy's siege weapons in the first wave of siege warfare, the enemy had to recraft the siege equipment. ”

"You mean, drag?" General Babud was keenly on the point.

"That's right, drag. We are on the defensive, and we have the advantage of walls. To fight a war is to magnify one's own advantages in order to win. We have walls, we are familiar with the terrain and climate, and we have a lot of food – and even wine. Although the enemy was about twice as strong as ours, we dragged them and slowly killed and wounded them. This tactic is like cutting flesh with a blunt knife - not fatal, but it hurts and works. ”

"When the Tangnis mongrels are tormented by the weather, poisons, battle damage, and injuries, we will fight them to the death, and then victory is just around the corner." Elpala's tactical arrangement for Geville's speech came to a final word. In the makeshift camp behind the logging fortress, there was a sound of unwavering approval.

Meanwhile, Michael is on his way to Winterfall with 200 men and Pixie.
