Chapter 67: The Afterlife

When Gordon first showed up at the cabin and invited Skye to join them, she refused, as somewhere in her mind she still believed she was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. Later, when she decided to accept the invitation to leave with Gordon, it was more out of a desire to escape reality. At that time, she never thought that the "afterlife" would become a destination that made her so relieved and dependent, and Jia Ying, although Skye had always thought she was a good person, she couldn't help but be surprised when she learned her true identity......

......

Well, maybe it's better to start at the beginning.

About a week ago, on the night that the big, blue Cree man came to her quarantine cabin to look for her, an eyeless guy knocked on her door. The man, who identified himself as Gordon, claimed to be one of her kind, an Inhuman, and that he had appeared here to take her among his companions.

For a moment the offer was really exciting, but Skye declined. Because, as mentioned before, deep down she still believed that she was a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent - and even though she hadn't been taught by her mother as a child, she knew that it wasn't a good habit to get into a stranger's car, especially when they were eyeless.

Gordon didn't mind, turned and left, saying nothing more than to give her time to think. And he promised, saying that if she changed her mind and called Gordon's name, he would arrive in time.

What Skye didn't expect at the time was that her mind would change so quickly.

Because she was locked up in such a hut deep in the mountains and forests, she didn't know exactly what happened. All she knew was that there seemed to be a large number of other people in S.H.I.E.L.D. who were not very happy with Coulson taking over as S.H.I.E.L.D. chief, especially with Coulson's handling of Skye's instability. They staged an armed coup d'état, seized control of Aegis, and sent agents to arrest Skye.

Then there was a little clash in the mountains...... Perhaps it is an understatement to say that a small conflict may indeed be an understatement. The agent shot her, and for a moment Skye thought she might be dead...... And then it just happened.

The majestic force poured into her body like a flood that could not close the floodgates a second before the gunshot, wandering over her limbs. It was as if she could feel the vibrations of every molecule that made up her body, and she felt the earth tremble beneath her feet. She didn't think about anything, the thought of stopping the bullet that was shooting at her was overwhelming. Then the torrent spat out down her arms, and the earth-shattering shock wave blew the bullet far away...... By the way, there are so many trees 100 meters high.

The poor agent was sent out of the way, a tree trunk stuck in his arm. The stout tree broke off a large part of the waist, and the soil was lifted up, and it was swept clean within a radius of ten meters with her as the center.

Skye was frightened, frightened by herself.

Whitehall was convinced that the obelisk could breed weapons of mass destruction, and it seems that he was right after all.

Skye felt like she was the weapon.

Then, almost subconsciously, she called out to Gordon. She wanted to get out of here, to escape from what she already had. And she can no longer deceive herself that she is a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, unless she is hunted down by other agents, which is also part of the agent's daily mission.

Gordon didn't break his promise. He flashed like a ghost in a blue light, and then disappeared with Skye in the same blue light. Then, before she could react, she was here—the "afterlife", the place where the Inhumans gathered.

No one knows exactly what this place is, as it's completely isolated, and the only way to get in and out is through the teleportation superpower of the Inhuman named Gordon. The scenery here is quite good, surrounded by mountains, and it is a piece of turquoise as far as the eye can see. When the sun rises in the morning, the mountains are gilded with a layer of sparkling gold, creating a hazy and natural beauty.

The first thing she met here was Lincoln Campbell, a handsome young man. He claimed to be from Cincinnati and was a student at medical school. He is also an Inhuman, with the ability to control or release electric currents.

Skye was a little wary at first, but she must admit that the lad quickly helped her feel at ease. He was a very talkative person, and he told her a lot about the gathering place, and helped her believe that she didn't come to some kind of weird camp. He tells Skye that the "afterlife" is like a transit point, that Inhumans are brought here from all over the world at the right time, and that it is only a temporary residence for most people.

She soon discovers that Rena, the woman who had entered the temple in the alien city with her, was also here. But her image can hardly be said to be human anymore. With barbs on her head and a distorted face, she belongs to the kind of image that haunts your mind and gives birth to nightmares that haunt you all night when you see her. Rena hated the way she had become, and it made her miserable.

But at the cost of these, Rena also seems to have gained the ability to predict the future to some extent. It's not something she can control, but every now and then she senses strange images, which have proven to be future clips many times.

Eventually, Skye meets Jia Ying, the administrator of the place.

When she first saw Jia Ying, Sky was also quite wary, and she suspected that it might have something to do with the other party's harsh expression and a few shallow scars on her face. But she soon discovers that the manager is actually quite a nice person.

Jia Ying patiently taught her to embrace her talents, told her not to be afraid, and guided her to try to use and develop her abilities. Under her guidance, Skye discovers that this ability is not as terrifying as she imagined, she can cause an avalanche from a mountain in the air, or shake a row of cups filled with water to make them play their own song.

But none of this is as shocking as Jia Ying when she tells Skye that she is her mother.

What happened next was like a dream. The fact that it happened suddenly was too perfect, perfect like a fragile mirror, making Skye suspect that every second she might suddenly sit up from the bed, and find that it turned out to be her own fantasy sitting alone on the bed.

She spent most of her life trying to figure out who her parents were, but even borrowing Aegis's resources ended up with nothing. And now, at this very moment, her biological mother suddenly appeared in front of her and gave her a warm hug and told her that everything was fine.

While Skye was still trying to digest this fact, Jia Ying immediately introduced her to her father, who was also brought to the "afterlife".

His name was Calvin Zabo and he was a doctor. When Jia Ying led Skye to meet him, he was holding a bouquet of white flowers in his hand, wearing a tan suit, standing like a bewildered schoolboy, looking at her nervously, as if he was afraid that his father figure would disappoint her.

She even learns that her real name is not Skye, but Daisy, Daisy Johnson.

For the first time in her life, she had the perfect dinner with her parents.

It's all so perfect, so perfect that it's scary to accept. A place where people like her live, where she doesn't have to fear and hide her abilities, and where she has the parents she's been looking for all her life...... For a moment, she almost believed that she could find peace here.

In fact, in retrospect, she felt that there might have been room for redemption. If they had borrowed Rena's ability to foresee the future, they might have predicted in advance the doom that would befall the paradise of the "afterlife".

If it weren't for Jia Ying who killed her in advance because she was afraid of Rena's foresight.
