The meaning of this passage is that a stone can be broken, but it cannot change its hard texture; Dansha can be ground but cannot change its vermilion color. The hardness and color are the characteristics of stone and dansha, respectively. Nature is innate, and it cannot be arbitrarily changed. The heroic and righteous people who are clean and self-righteous have their names and festivals like "Shi Jian" and "Danchi" that cannot be tarnished.

"Lü's Spring and Autumn" uses the stories of Boyi and Shuqi to illustrate this point. Bo Yi and Shu Qi were the sons of Guzhu Jun at the end of the Shang Dynasty.
