No accumulation of steps, no thousands of miles; If you don't accumulate small streams, you can't become rivers and seas.
-- "Leading Cadres Should Love Reading, Read Good Books, and Be Good at Reading-Speech at the Opening Ceremony of the Second Batch of Advanced Classes and Special Seminars of the Central Party School in the Spring Semester of 2009" and other articles
■Interpretation
Perseverance and perseverance are the attitudes that should be taken by reading for learning, and they are also the qualities that are urgently needed for being a person and doing things. Reading is a long-term process that requires hard work, and we should not be impetuous and superficial, but should first be easy and then difficult, from shallow to deep, step by step, and water drops through the stone. Comrade Xi Jinping once cited the example of someone who studied that a person who reads for one hour a day can become an expert on a certain issue after three years. He thus admonished the leading cadres that they must develop the habit of perseverance and that they must carry forward their squeezing spirit. Strive to squeeze out a certain amount of time to study every day, and be especially good at using the fragmented time to read. Second, we must carry forward the drill strength. Read the book a hundred times, see its meaning by yourself, and work hard to a certain extent, you can reach the realm of supernatural transformation. Third, we must carry forward tenacity. Whether it is learning or doing things, the most valuable thing is lifelong persistence, no matter what stage it is in, tirelessly, perseverance, it will naturally reach thousands of miles away, into the river and the sea.
■Original text
The soil is a mountain, and the wind and rain are prosperous; The water becomes an abyss, and the dragon is born; Accumulate goodness into virtue, and the gods are self-satisfied, and the sacred heart is prepared. Therefore, if you don't accumulate steps, you can't reach thousands of miles; If you don't accumulate small streams, you can't become rivers and seas. Qi Ji jumps, can't take ten steps; Ten horses, the merit is relentless. Perseverance, rotten wood does not break; Perseverance, gold and stone can be carved.
——(Warring States) Xunzi "Xunzi Persuasion"
■Definition
The above passage leads to the argument with a metaphor: "Mountains of earth are piled up, and wind and rain are prosperous; The water becomes an abyss, and the dragon is born; Accumulate goodness into virtue, and the gods are self-satisfied, and the sacred heart is prepared. "Explain that learning should pay attention to accumulation. Xunzi does not admit the statement of "born saint", and believes that as long as you study hard and "accumulate goodness and become virtuous", you can reach the realm of a saint. Then, he further stated: "Therefore there is no accumulation of steps, and there is no way to reach a thousand miles; If you don't accumulate small streams, you can't become rivers and seas. In ancient times, it was called "跬 (kuǐ)" and two feet "step", and "跬步" described a very small distance. This sentence is to say that without accumulating a distance of one and a half steps, you cannot reach a place thousands of miles away; If you don't accumulate small flowing water, you can't gather into rivers and seas. This is a negative metaphor to illustrate the importance of accumulation. After this positive and negative metaphor, the truth that learning should pay attention to accumulation is self-evident.
No matter how long the road is, it can be completed step by step; No matter how short the road is, you can't reach it without stepping away. People often admire and envy people who are successful in their careers, but how can they achieve what they do? "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step", only by starting from bit by bit, step by step, and slowly accumulating, can we achieve the leap from quantitative change to qualitative change and achieve our expected goals.
