Chapter 4: The Chabis

Shefman has been forcibly conscripted into the service by the Engineering Department of the Geocentric Homes for almost fifty years. Like countless conscripts from all over the world, his daily job was to dig the earth in a tedious and tiring job that was unpaid.

In the words of the great leader Dieter,

"Centennial conscription" is the duty of every citizen on this planet. Since everyone is the same, there is nothing to complain about, and Schefman just wants to end the remaining fifty years of service as soon as possible, and then he can go home to reunite with his wife and children.

Survival is hard, especially for the life that lives on this planet. The three stars of the Alpha Centauri system rise and fall irregularly, either scorching the surface of the asteroid or leaving it in hellish cold, making it feel like purgatory every day and night.

Fortunately, the Chabis only live underground. Their area of activity is only more than 100 kilometers below the surface, which greatly reduces the heat and cold of the outside world, thus allowing them to survive.

However, the existential crisis is far from simple. Schefman is already more than 2,000 years old, which is equivalent to the youth of a human being.

Thousands of years of lifespan is about the same as immortality for most life forms on other planets, but this has become a nightmare for the Chapis race.

This is because the small space below the surface of the planet and above the core of the planet is not abundant, and it is almost crowded with these burly, dark-skinned, tyrannical but immortal Chabis people.

The Chapis have lived on this planet for hundreds of thousands of years. Their appearance and habits are very different from those of humans on Earth, more like cockroaches or ants that have been magnified several times.

They were black, shiny, and unusually hard, a beetle-like exoskeleton, and with this thick set of natural armor, they could resist the friction and scraping of hard rocks, and move freely between the rock formations underground.

What's more, unlike the creatures on Earth, the Chabis were able to survive without the need for sunlight and oxygen, so they could live in the underground all year round.

Similar to insects, they have six limbs, two tentacles on their heads, and a third and fourth limb that cross from the thorax and abdomen, allowing them to walk and hold at the same time, which makes them more efficient at moving quickly and using tools.

Because they have lived in a dark environment for a long time, as a supplement to language and writing, when they are in close contact with their own kind, they can quickly find out each other's minds by touching each other's tentacles on each other's heads, and they no longer need to struggle to communicate verbally.

The Khabis were non-ploughing (harsh natural conditions did not allow them to develop farming skills), were good hunters, and fed on other burrowing animals underground, and occasionally wild plants in the soil.

While struggling to survive, they have also passed down and developed their own civilization from generation to generation over the long years.

The buildings of the Chabis were all built deep underground far from the surface, and the passages they dug were as thin as anthills, dense as spider webs, and the buildings were as varied as the elaborate dwellings of beehives, as well as the frantically dug underground rivers or border trenches, as magnificent as the Grand Canyon.

The Chabis occupy a vast area of the planet from more than 100 kilometers below the surface to more than 1,000 kilometers above, and the soil they excavated is piled up on the surface of the planet.

The light elements such as boron, carbon, sulfur and phosphorus in these soils are evaporated by the high temperature of the three stars of the Alpha galaxy and dispersed in the thin atmosphere, while heavy elements such as chromium, iron, manganese and copper are melted by the scorching heat of the surface during the day, and solidified and covered the surface of the planet at night due to low temperatures.

Even with all the constant reclamation of new habitats deep into the earth, the entire Chapis community is still in danger of survival - because their lifespan is simply too long!

Natural attrition and family planning have little effect on regulating the population, and the most effective means and methods are the brutal and ruthless wars and killings between various ethnic groups.

At the beginning of creation, God gave each of them a corresponding way to solve the problem of existence. For example, human beings have no coat and cannot shelter from wind and rain and cold; Weak limbs, they have no chance of winning against any large animal, but they are born with one

"Smart" brains can make them invincible in competition with nature. The same is true of the Chapis people.

Along with their long lifespans comes their ferocious and tyrannical temperament, which is not only cruel to the aliens, but also more ruthless to their kind, which may be the reason why they survive.

Every Chabis is born a fierce fighter, and fighting is a nobler being for them than life, and dying in battle is a great honor for them.

In the depths of the planet, hundreds of kilometers deep, all kinds of killings are staged every day, from large-scale conflicts between tribes that bleed and kill people, to small fights between two individuals who fight each other without saying a word, and for hundreds of thousands of years, each other's killings have been carried out throughout the entire history of the Chabes.

About a thousand years ago, a powerful tribe suddenly emerged, and their leader was none other than the great leader Dieters.

He had conquered almost all of the Chapis tribes with great force, and the intelligent creatures of the planet, at least nominally, were once again united under a single jurisdiction.

Dietite was a wise monarch who did not come out of the world. The conquerors of the past dynasties, relying on nothing more than the formidable martial arts, as the so-called killing one person is a crime, killing ten thousand people is a hero, and the dead are piled up, and generation after generation of Shabis leaders have risen; In addition to his bravery, Dieter also has a strong and wise mind that is different from ordinary people.

In appearance alone, his head is larger than the other Chabis people, and of course such an out-of-appearance is only a superficial sign.

According to unconfirmed rumors from those who have been in contact with Dieter, the great leader has the special ability to capture the thoughts of those in his vicinity by teleportation without relying on the contact of his tentacles.

This terrifying skill made most people fear him like a tiger, but at the same time, as a leader, this ability quickly gathered a large number of loyal courtiers around him, and it did not take long for Dieter to lead them to successfully complete the great cause of unifying the entire planet.

What is even more remarkable is that this outstanding leader saw the bottleneck of the survival and development of the Chabis people early on, and after completing the goal of unifying the world, he set his sights on further afield...... Dieter quickened the pace of the Chapis to develop the Earth's center, announcing an ambitious and secretive one

He announced to his subjects that every male Shabis was obligated to build a homeland for 100 years, but the specifics of this project, except for a few low-level projects that were overtly low-level, were not known to the general public.

A large number of intellectuals with scientific research abilities were sent to the occult department for special development work, and laborers recruited from ordinary hunter families were responsible for some simple manual labor such as excavation and construction.

Each department should do its own job, and other matters are strictly forbidden, and all service members are also forbidden to contact their family and friends, especially those who are sent to key institutions to do intellectual work

"Research" people. The aforementioned Schefman is the tens of thousands of people in this empire

An ordinary member of the "Homeland Center" program. The requisition order fell on his head when the whole thing

The "Homeland of the Earth" project has also been going on for about eight or nine hundred years. Late one night, when Schefman was lying asleep in bed after a hard day's work, he had a terrible nightmare.

He dreamed that the solid ground under his feet began to tremble violently, and a strange dragon's mouth erupted from the ground, and the whole construction site was burning, and some of the workers were burned to death, and some fell into the bottomless abyss...... When Schefman opened his eyes, he found that it was not exactly a dream, that an unprecedented earthquake was happening, and that he and his co-workers were crawling on the ground, pushed from side to side by an invisible giant hand in the air.

Schefman crawled out of the house on six legs, the ground still shaking violently under his feet, and from his black pupils reflected the flickering red light in the distance, and his tentacles and limbs could feel a huge roar coming from the depths of the earth, the dull rumble seemed to announce the coming of the end.

The workers around him were screaming loudly and running in terror, and Schefman silently closed his eyes...... The earthquake lasted for a meal, and then slowly subsided.

The workers were driven back to the dormitory by the foreman, found some stones and planks to make temporary beds, and gradually fell asleep in fear and suspicion.

When Schefman woke up, he saw the mine's gas lights on as usual, but the squad leader told them that they didn't have to go to work today, and that the entire staff of the district had gathered in the square to listen to the important speech of the great leader Dieter.

Schefman later learned that the earthquake a few hours ago was not just an isolated incident in his area, that night, all the Chapis people on the whole planet felt a strong shock at the same moment, and what was even more bizarre was that the earthquake was not a natural disaster but a man-made man, and this ordinary night in his long life turned out to be an epoch-making anniversary of extraordinary significance and enough to go down in history.

On this still gloomy morning, the Khubis of the whole planet, whether in the city or in the country, whether they were ZF dignitaries or ordinary hunters, put down their work and listened with reverence and full attention to the voice of the great leader coming from various loudspeakers, large and small: "Dear compatriots, last night there was an earthquake that frightened you. However, in addition to being frightened, you should feel more relieved and proud, because this earthquake has announced the achievement of a great achievement: from today onwards, we have invested huge manpower and material resources to build the 'Homeland in the Center of the Earth' project, which took thousands of years to build, has been basically completed. In the meantime, I'm here to announce to you that we finally have the ability to travel across the stars of the entire race!

"As we all know, for the past hundred thousand years, our race has been living in dire straits. The harsh natural conditions make us have to live underground and see the light of day; Years of endless wars and killings everywhere have caused great damage to our bodies and minds. Dear compatriots, have you ever wondered what is the reason for all this? Are we born to be this way? How can we change our destiny? The voice in the megaphone was silent for a moment, and then spoke affectionately: "Since the day I ended the communal strife, I have been thinking about a question: how to bring my people away from the suffering that has lasted for tens of thousands of years. The result of my thinking is that we must move away from our galaxy and go to the vast universe to find a new home.

"As you know, our three-star galaxy brings us irregular sunrises and sunsets and seasonal changes, which makes the fate of our Shabis tribe as unpredictable and capricious as the roulette wheel at the gambling table. These three suns above our heads bring us light and heat, but also bring us ice and cold, and give us a strange and incomprehensible future. Because of them, we can only burrow hundreds of kilometers underground, never to come out of the day. This aversion to darkness, as well as the fear of the unknown, directly creates our murderous character. As long as we live in the Alpha System, this miserable state of affairs will continue for another day and will never change until the end of our long lives, and those of our children and grandchildren. Fellow citizens, I have conceived countless possibilities to change our tragic fate, but the most fundamental way is to leave these three murderous suns forever and seek our future in other galaxies.

"The 'Homeland in the Depths' project aims to transform our geocentric center, but the goal is in the vast and unknown universe. What it wants to achieve is to detach our planet from a predetermined orbit, and to be able to set its own direction and have the ability to travel interstellarly. In short, it is to transform our planet into a super-large-scale spaceship. Today, I proudly announce to you that this goal has now been achieved! From this day on, the fate of our Chabis is firmly in our own hands. In the next few hundred and even thousands of years, we will become proud nomads in the universe, and we will seek our new stars and build our new homes. We have a resolute character, we have a proud lifespan, and we have an indomitable soul! I firmly believe that even our generation of Chabis can witness the day when a new home will be built! My subjects, you have already suffered so much, I am proud of you, pray for you, and let us work together for this new goal! At the end of the speech, Schefman, who was standing in the square, was already in tears.

The people around them were silent for a long time, and then burst into thunderous applause and cheers.

After the modified planets were capable of interstellar navigation, the preparations were only about a year old, and all the Chabis embarked on a vast journey of space navigation.

The preferred destination is the solar system, which is only four light-years away. The massive starship was equipped with antimatter-fueled engines for acceleration and ion thrusters for shifting and steering, alternating between the two, and with the help of the gravitational slingshots of several large celestial bodies on the journey, it took the Brakes just over three hundred years to reach the solar system.

Their first stop was the beautiful planet between Venus and the Earth, Drow Venus.
