Desmond Dawes was the only U.S. soldier in history to receive the U.S. Congressional Medal of Honor for not killing a single enemy. Dawes was born on February 7, 1919, in Lynchburg, Virginia, to William Thomas Dawes, a carpenter, to Bertha (Oliver) Dawes.
