Chapter 61: Into the Eighteen Layers of Hell
There is a saying that "the king of Hades is easy to see, but the little ghost is difficult", which refers to the fact that the county officials are not as good as the current management. But what the editor wants to talk about today is the Lord of Yama in this proverb. When it comes to Lord Hades, many people think of the king who is in charge of hell. But in further talking about who the king of Hades is, some people don't know, at most they can only say the ten halls of Hades, let's take a closer look at the past and present life of the Lord of Hades.
Lord Yama, also known as King Yama, is based on the Yama King in Hindu mythology, and in early Buddhist and Hindu mythology, Yama was the only king of the underworld. The word "Yama King" is also translated as "two kings", because the king suffered both happiness and suffering in hell. In addition, there is another saying that the brother and sister are the kings of hell, the brother rules the men's affairs, and the sister rules the women's affairs, so they are called the two kings. According to the Buddhist book, the ghost king of Yama rules one of the four hells. Its palace is outside the Tiewei Mountain in the south of Yanfu Tizhou, and it is 60 years long, with seven kinds of walls, railings, bell nets and row trees. Taidian Garden, the scenery is very beautiful. However, Hades is not just about enjoying good fortune and presiding over the hell and prisons. Because he had created bad karma in his lifetime, his karma was within reach, so that he still suffered from it at three times. When he suffers, the palace will naturally turn into a blazing iron city, and he will also be punished by the prison guards. When he repents and vows to enter the Buddhahood, the bitterness will naturally disappear.
In Esoteric Buddhism, King Yama is listed in the heavenly realm and is called Flame Motian. There are also practices centered on the Flame Heaven. According to the "Twelve Heavenly Offering Rituals", this celestial statue is riding a buffalo, holding a human head in the right hand, and holding a palm on the left hand. In terms of law cultivation, Japan has a 'Flame Offering Method' (abbreviated as 'Flame Offering'), whose main functions are to eliminate diseases, relieve disasters, prolong life, and prolong production. When cultivating the Flame Ferris Method, the other mandalas established are called 'Flame Ferris Mandalas'.
The Yama King we are familiar with is actually a Taoist immortal, and Taoism is based on Hindu mythology and Buddhism's Yama King to be one of the ten halls of Yama, and combined with folklore to combine it with historical figures. But at the same time, Buddhism also absorbed the concept of the Ten Halls of Yama, so that the priesthood of the King of Yama in Buddhist mythology and the king of the underworld was deprived, and the Buddhist King of Yama also became the master of the fifth hall of the underground palace served by Bao Zheng of the Northern Song Dynasty like the local Taoism.
Originally, there was only one king of Hades, and the ruler was divided into five, and his assistants numbered eighteen. In the Tang Dynasty, there was a saying that the Emperor of Heaven canonized the king of Yama and commanded the guards of the five prisons, and at the same time, there were also ten halls of hell, and the ten halls had lords, called the ten kings of the underworld. The ten kings have their own names, and they are collectively known as the ten kings of Hades.
The so-called ten palace kings are: King Qin Guang, King Chujiang, Emperor Song, King Wuguan, King Yama, King Biancheng, King Taishan, King of the City, King of Equality, and King of the Wheel.
Hades is in charge of human life, death, and reincarnation. According to Buddhist legend, when a person dies, he or she will report to the underworld to be judged by the king of Hades.
The subordinates around Lord Yama are: Ghost Judge; Black and white impermanence, bull head and horse face, Zhong Kui, Meng Po, Di Gong, You Xing, countless Yin soldiers and ghost generals, etc.
In folklore, the "Four Great Hades" say that there are four Hades: in addition to Bao Zheng, there are Han Baohu, Fan Zhongyan and Kou Zhun. Another theory believes that there were three kings of Hades, namely: Bao Zheng, Fan Zhongyan and Kou Zhun. They are all clean officials.
Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, the theory of the Ten Palaces of Yama has prevailed, so that there is a tendency to replace the original Dongyue Emperor of Taoism to dominate life and death. However, there are few temples dedicated to the ten halls of Hades. Generally, the Hades Hall is set up in the local City God Temple, and the Ten Halls of Hades are enshrined. On the birthday of each king, although there is also incense, it is mainly dedicated to the ten halls of the Yama, when the time of the transcendent ritual for the deceased souls, in order to pray for the release of the souls of the deceased and the ascension to heaven as soon as possible.
