Chapter 6: Night Falls
Karl gritted his teeth and ran to the school gate, just like those athletes in long-distance races who sprint at the end. However, there is something different about the athlete who is in it for the medals, and he is in order to get away from this strange and dangerous campus.
If he could, when this was over, he would like to transfer to another university with Monica. He really didn't want to bring back those creepy memories here.
"Help! Help me! Before he could reach the door, Carl began to cry out for help. He really couldn't wait, and he had been facing those unknown weirdness alone, which made Carl's emotions on the verge of collapse several times. He just wanted someone to help him with this nightmare now.
Seeing the door getting closer and closer, Carl was even more excited, his eyes were even wetter, no one knew the bitterness in his heart, no one knew how much he paid from the classroom along the way, he was just an ordinary student, but he had to face things that most adults had never encountered alone, you can imagine how dazed he was.
In his eyes, the doorway was a gate to heaven.
"Help! Is there anyone you can help me? He walked out like crazy.
Passing through the gate and into the street, he stopped.
"Help, is there a ......" Karl's eyes were glazed, and his voice became quieter and quieter, and finally disappeared.
He looked around, looked down at his hands, and as if he didn't quite believe it, he touched his face again. Some are cold, some are pale. He looked up at the dusk sky, and everything seemed so unreal.
"I must be dreaming...... Carl closed his eyes, and cold sweat began to break out on his forehead.
Maybe when I open my eyes, the world will be clear? It's also possible, huh. Then give it a try!
Carl slowly opened his eyes, and his surroundings did not change in the slightest, and the city streets were still empty and uninhabited. The car was parked quietly on the side of the road, but there was no driver in the car. Those traffic lights are still changing at a certain time.
But who can tell me, where did those people go? Where are the white-collar workers who drive cars, the old men who sell newspapers, and the financiers who never leave the opportunity?
As the sky grew darker and the sun's rays moved away from the area, darkness began to eat away at the territory of light, and the temperature around him dropped, making Karl's already pale face even whiter. From time to time, the wind blew in the streets, blew up some newspapers, fluttered in the air, and then slowly fell, making him look more like a loser in life.
A newspaper blew and hit him in the face with a "snap", and Carl woke up from the huge blow and broke out in a cold sweat.
"What's going on? I just now? He had no idea what he was doing, and his sanity seemed to have been suddenly half drained, sinking deeper and deeper into the blow.
"It's horrible!" He gasped. His emotions were invisibly affected.
"It's just that my original plan may be going bankrupt." Carl looked helplessly at the Capitol building far away. He knew that he couldn't find anyone to help him anymore, and even now he was very confused about what to do next.
"The entire city has disappeared, and this is no ordinary supernatural event." An inexplicable chill broke out of his body. Of course, what made him feel even more terrible was that he was fine. Was it premeditated or pure luck? He didn't know, he just wanted to see a living person now.
What made him feel even worse were the dark shadows on campus, and he didn't know if they would come out at night. Carl remembered that the Shadow seemed to be a special being, not a three-dimensional creature, and had been chasing him in a translational way, and was immune to a lot of damage, not even corrosive liquids. But it seems to be afraid of the sun? It's just that there is no other way to hurt it, or even kill it, than sunlight.
The sun was about to set, but Carl didn't know where to go, and looked aimless. Just looking around, there is a feeling that "although the world is big, there is no place for it".
"It's getting dark, so I'd better go to some shops and find a flashlight and some batteries." After thinking about it for a long time, he decided what to do next. Beth broke down, and now it was lying quietly in her rucksack, so Carl needed to find another lighting tool.
The centre of Heaton City is largely populated by financial institutions, with a meagre number of convenience stores, and those groceries are often located on the fringes of the city and in between. Luckily, Carl's university is located in the area, which makes it easy for him to find what he needs.
"I remember there was a supermarket right on Pitt Street, very close to here, a few blocks away." Carl mentally recalled the exact location of the supermarket and began to walk that way.
It was getting darker, and except for a small amount of sunlight on the street, the rest of the place, such as the alley, had been swallowed up by the darkness. And those darker and deeper places, even rats dare not enter.
Karl was walking down the street, and he noticed something unusual, muttering, "The cars on the street are obviously heading out of town, and they're very crowded. Does that mean something happened inside for them to run away? ”
Thinking of this, I inadvertently turned my attention to the Capitol building. There's always something there......
Coming back to his senses, Carl looked up at the sign posted on the wall, "Is this Pitt Street?" It's a big change, and it's not familiar at all. ”
The entire street was overgrown with weeds, some of which were as tall as a person. Some grow in tires, in stone crevices, and even in drain covers. Some garbage was thrown everywhere and cars were left staggered as if no one had been to the place for years.
Karl hesitated for a moment before stepping inside, and he looked in both directions, and most of the shops were completely changed, and the once glamorous décor had long since become a ruined building. It was even more filthy than the slums, and the only thing that gave him some comfort was the supermarket, which was not much better, but at least the shelves and furnishings were mostly intact.
"I hope I didn't lie down in vain." With a longing in his heart, Karl walked in.
The supermarket is a large area, but because of the lack of lights, Carl is careful with every step he takes, for fear of falling into some trap. He didn't want to endure that inhuman pain like he did at school.
According to the memory in his head, he calculated the approximate distance and came to the eleventh row of shelves. Because of the reason he frequented here, he remembered that the flashlights on this shelf also reduced some unnecessary trouble.
