Chapter 17 Final Strike Seventeen
Here, Patriarch Yide not only heard the most authentic explanation of the "Jizo Bodhisattva Sutra", but also spoke out his own experience and asked the Master to become enlightened. After listening to Patriarch Yide's dream, the Master told Patriarch Yide that this was actually a great opportunity. Buddhists call this "obstacle", which means a kind of tempering. Whenever a student of Buddhism has a comprehension or something that is refined, there is an illusion, which is hindering the progress of the student of Buddhism. Let the student of Buddhism retreat from the difficulty, or continue to sink into the sea of suffering and cannot extricate himself. Only by getting out of this predicament or completely breaking the illusion can we achieve refinement and a higher level of comprehension. The emergence of this obstacle is inevitable and cannot be helped by outsiders, and must be overcome by oneself. Whether Patriarch Yide advances or retreats depends on himself, and others can't help Patriarch Yide to make decisions.
Patriarch Yide held the "Dizang Bodhisattva Sutra" in his hand, and sat alone in the courtyard of the temple on the top of Jiuhua Mountain for a night, and finally understood. The subordinate told Patriarch Yide that on this night, Patriarch Yide's white hair seemed to be half black and turned white. Patriarch Yide didn't care about the color of his hair, he felt that he had found the answer and the way forward. Patriarch Yide said goodbye to the master and never went up to Jiuhua Mountain again. However, in the heart of Patriarch Yide, he and Jizo Bodhisattva will always be together, as long as there is Jizo Bodhisattva in his heart, he will die in Jiuhua Mountain.
After leaving Jiuhua Mountain, Patriarch Yide still did not return home, but no longer used the excuse of visiting the mountains and rivers, his wish was to go all over the famous mountains and rivers, and go to every temple. He worshipped the Buddha with a devout attitude, and every time he went to a monastery, he would ask for Buddhist teachings and make offerings to the Dharma. He also gradually changed from an uneducated gentleman to a student of Buddhism who had studied Buddhism to a certain extent. For this kind of Buddhist student with status and status, the vast majority of monasteries are absolutely welcome, not to mention that Patriarch Yide will leave a large sum of money to the monastery every time he goes to a place.
It wasn't until Patriarch Yide came to Songshan Shaolin Temple that when he asked to make a set of clothes for each master in the way of generosity, the words of a master gave Patriarch Yide a new understanding. "It is good to be able to give, but it is the least good to give with money. A true practitioner of Buddhism should be to give with the Dharma, that is, to educate sentient beings with the Dharma. Even if you can't give with the law, you should do it with your strength rather than with your money. The so-called charity is to do Buddhist work or help build monasteries by yourself. Money is a good thing, but it's not your own. The money you spend is either left to you by your parents, or it is shared by the family. You don't have 30% of your own merits with money, and most of them belong to your parents or relatives. If you want to get something in return for your charity, it is better to carry a piece of wood or carry a load of rice for the monastery than to donate a large sum of money to the monastery. However, it is not the way out for a student of Buddhism to get a reward for generosity, and it is wrong to do this as a business in order to pay for more rewards. ”
Patriarch Yide was like an initiation, and he dropped everything and knelt down in front of this Master to ask for his teachings. The Master told Patriarch Yide, "Giving doesn't necessarily mean giving back. When you have something to give, don't think about whether there will be a return, whether the return is greater than my effort. The worldly rules of business are not suitable for Buddhists. Buddhism pays attention to giving, and 'giving' and 'gain' are both opposing and complementary. If you give up, you will definitely have a 'gain', but this 'gain' is not necessarily the 'gain' you want or the 'gain' you want. When you want to give, you must do three things, first, be fearless, second, be fearless, and third, be without regrets. The so-called 'fearless' means to move forward bravely, and nothing can stop it. 'Fearless' means to be steadfast in giving without outside interference. 'No regrets' means that there is no hesitation or regret when giving. Whether it is giving or studying Buddhism, with the mentality of moving forward without asking for anything in return, fearless and without regret, there will be unexpected success and gain. ”
Patriarch Yide asked the Venerable Master to show the way and the direction of learning Buddhism. The Venerable Master told Patriarch Yide, "It is necessary to ask others for experience, but it is not necessary. Other people's Dharma may not be right for you. Someone else's path is not necessarily your way. Gaining the experience of others, choosing the experience that suits you and synthesizing your own Dharma, this is your own path and direction of practice. Listening too much to the experiences of people can lead to losing oneself and looking at one's own Dharma path. Now you don't need much experience and teachings, but you have to be firm in your path. Giving is right, but it should be done in a different way. Giving to the Dharma and don't have enough understanding of the Dharma and the Dharma. The money you use to give money is not your own, and the results are not very large, which is not suitable for the cultivation of your fairy Ah. Only by letting go of one's identity to build or renovate a monastery for the Buddhist family can one improve one's practice and consolidate one's cultivation by giving with strength. ”
Patriarch Yide listened to the teachings of the master and took his subordinates and other ordinary people to personally build a road for Shaolin Temple. It was very hard, but I really felt a different taste. Through hands-on work, Patriarch Yide found that his confusion was less, and his health was better and his people were relaxed. A Venerable Master told Patriarch Yide that in fact, this is only a small merit, and if you can actually build or renovate a monastery, this is a great merit and great blessing. Patriarch Yide made a great wish to build a temple, hoping that through this great merit, he would have the opportunity to reunite with his family in the next life.
At that time, Shaolin Temple was the leader of temples in the world, and many temples would consult Shaolin Temple if they had problems. The royal belief in Taoism led to little official support for the monasteries. The money collected by the common people is too small and scattered. Therefore, the maintenance and renovation of general temples need the support and help of large temples, especially the temples in some remote places need the help of large temples like Shaolin Temple. Every year, the Shaolin Temple receives requests for help from many temples, but the Shaolin Temple itself is not having a good time, and it is rarely able to help other temples. This is also a kind of helplessness, Shaolin Temple is not unwilling to help, but its own strength is not enough to help.
During the time when Patriarch Yide was helping to repair the road in Shaolin Temple, a great monk came to Shaolin Temple. No, it should be said that a great monk has returned. This master was originally the master of the Shaolin Temple, and the Shaolin Temple sent him to the field half a year ago, and now he is back. It turned out that Shaolin Temple had received a letter from a certain temple in Fujian a year ago, saying that the temple there was not only in disrepair, but also lacked an abbot who was profound in Buddhism. Shaolin Temple decided to send this master with the Dharma name Huiyuan to take a sum of money to this place called Yong'an Temple to be the abbot. Unexpectedly, this Master Huiyuan came back immediately, saying that he couldn't stay in Yong'an Temple and had to come back.
Patriarch Yide happened to hear the words of Master Huiyuan, and privately asked Master Huiyuan about the situation of Yong'an Temple. Yong'an Temple was originally built in the Sui and Tang dynasties and is one of the earliest monasteries in the local area. The local area is close to the sea, and almost all men live on the sea, and every family depends on fishing as a source of livelihood. Unlike farming, fishing is risky and insecure. Sometimes it's common to go out and get nothing, and the most terrible thing is to never come back. In addition, the seaside is windy and rough, and tsunami and shipwrecks often occur, so the common people built Yong'an Temple to ask the Bodhisattva to bless everyone. Just from the name, you know that the locals' greatest wish is to be safe forever.
After so many years of wind and rain, Yong'an Temple has collapsed and rebuilt many times. Because the local people are not wealthy, and the local government is not actively maintained, Yong'an Temple is now almost abandoned. Master Huiyuan was not unprepared when he went, but he couldn't stay anymore after seeing Yong'an Temple. Yong'an Temple not only has the Buddha statue seriously damaged, but also the temple is almost completely damaged. The most difficult thing for Master Huiyuan to accept is that the local people seem to have forgotten the existence of Yong'an Temple, and they are unwilling to contribute money and effort to the renovation of Yong'an Temple. The master of the monastery is either old or incapacitated, and there is no one who can help. The poor foundation, insufficient faith, and serious shortage of manpower have become the three major problems of Yong'an Temple.
