Chapter 15: The Theft of Wayne Enterprises
After a night of hard work, Gotham is in total chaos. Falcone's surprise attack on Copote's Gotham docks was the trigger, and armed clashes erupted across the city, with gunfire continuing until dawn.
Everyone at the Gotham Police Department was ready to work overtime and strike overnight, except for the new Forbes chief, who gave everyone an incredible command in a loud voice - stay put.
Yes, by the hands of the soldiers. At this critical juncture when the whole city is under gunfire, the Gotham Police Department makes a decision that is as simple as four words, and it will not move.
When questioned by some veteran police detectives, the Forbes chief said eloquently: "We have more important things to solve than the gangsters - Batman." Any other issues can be put aside until the masked vigilante issue is resolved. β
So all night long, the criminals took to the streets, carrying all kinds of dangerous weapons to contribute to the splendid decoration of the city, and not a single patrol officer could be seen on the street.
Except for this lone knight.
Batman is like a firefighter, and the whole Gotham is in flames, and the whole city is waiting for his rescue.
And he didn't know that what he did was also in vain.
In the early morning, the sun's rays finally dispelled the last trace of gloom left by the night, and the gunfire that had been sounding all night finally stopped for a while. The police took to the streets to clean up the battlefield of the previous night.
Several of the gangsters sat on the ground in a pile tied back to back with thick ropes pinned to a note with bat marks pinned to the rope.
"Director Forbes, Batman packed these guys for us." A police officer said.
"Oh?" Director Forbes stepped forward. Unexpectedly, he squatted down and untied the gangsters.
"Director, what are you doing!?"
"I said that Gotham City has to be clear about its position." Forbes said, "The Gotham police and Batman are at odds, and we can't accept that a masked vigilante will make him think he's above the law." β
He didn't say it, but the implication was already clear - we don't want the people Batman captured.
Roy also went to bed late when he returned to his apartment, and was woken up by the ringing of his cell phone the next morning.
"Who?" He asked, sitting up with his back to the head of the bed.
"Bruce Wayne." The person over there said that it was rare that he didn't use a voice changer today, and his voice sounded very tired, "You want to join, now I'll give you a chance." I'm very busy right now, but I have an important case to investigate, I know what you're capable of, and I hope you can find it out for me. If the result satisfies me, I will consider acceding to your request. β
"Tell me about it." Roy Road.
"Last night, Wayne Enterprises stole a very important piece of equipment," Bruce said. I've informed the CEO, Mr. Lucius Fox, that you should go over and find out what happened right now and report back to me. β
"Deal."
Wayne Enterprises, one of the oldest enterprises in Gotham City, has a deep ingrained influence in Gotham, and the building as its headquarters can't be overshadowed by others, so the Wayne Building, which reaches into the sky, has become the tallest building in Gotham.
Entering the lobby and completing a series of interviews, Roy took the direct elevator up to his office on the top floor, where Lucius Fox was already waiting.
Mr. Fox is a black man, amiable, and always has an approachable smile. He had a short white mustache, his nails were gray, and the wrinkles on his forehead were the most conspicuous.
"Mr. Green."
"Mr. Fox."
After the two shook hands, Lucius said, "Mr. Wayne has informed me that you are a rare and gifted investigator. As far as I know, there aren't many people who can get that kind of evaluation from him."
After a pause, he looked at Roy with a different look and said, "I heard you saw through his little secret?" β
Obviously, this Mr. Lucius also knows the identity of Batman.
"Oh, it's nothing."
"You know, 'it's nothing,' but not many people do it." Lucius said, "If you really think so, then I'm really impressed." β
Roy smiled slightly, "Let's get straight to the point." Mr. Wayne said it was stolen last night? β
Lucius seemed to be brewing for a long time before he said, "Come with me." β
Roy followed Lucius into the elevator one after the other, Lucius pressed a number of floors, and after a dozen seconds they arrived at the technical department.
"This is the technology department of Wayne Enterprises." Lucius led the way and introduced, "I used to be in this department, and the former CEO of Wayne Enterprises wanted to fire me, but he was fired by Mr. Bruce Wayne instead. Since then, I have taken his place. β
"It's ironic." Roy said, his eyes constantly looking around, and there was quite a few things in this place that caught his attention.
A few suspended multifunctional metal belts, a cuirass made of special fibers, and even a camouflage armored car with only one of its noses exposedβpainted black might be even more familiar.
It's no wonder that Batman always has some high-tech gadgets. Roy thought so.
"This is it." Lucius said, pointing to a very abrupt clearing.
Roy glanced at it briefly, and there were clear traces of something on the ground that had been there, and it was not difficult to tell through the shallow layer of dust. The bottom is square, and the area is about one square meter.
"It's a big guy." Roy said.
"yes, it's big." Lucius said.
Roy said, "Was it the only entrance we just came in?" β
"Yes."
"I noticed that there is surveillance video at the door, is the surveillance on all day?"
"Yes, and I didn't catch anything last night, not even a ghost."
"That's weird." Roy said, rubbing his chin, "Someone stole such a big thing, but there was nothing in the surveillance?" Could it be that surveillance has been tampered with? β
"Wayne Enterprises' firewall is state-of-the-art, sir." Lucius packed his ticket and said, "Even if there is really some genius who hacks our surveillance, it is impossible not to leave any traces, at least we can detect that it has been manipulated." But the truth is that last night's surveillance has remained normal. β
Roy nodded, "Okay." So I can finally ask, what exactly was stolen? According to what Mr. Wayne told me, what seems like an important piece of equipment? β
Lucius hesitated for a moment, then said, "It's a prototype sonic weapon." β
"Sonic weapons?"
Lucius nodded and explained, "As far as I know, this prototype should be the only one in the world, because it is too dangerous and has been banned from production. It is a military weapon, capable of invading all terminal equipment within the confines of a building. Mobile phones, computers, televisions, and all networked devices can invade and release ultrasound waves through each terminal that can overload the central nervous system of the human body. β
"Wow, that sounds like a scary device."
"But now it's stolen." "You know, especially at a juncture like this, it makes Mr. Wayne nervous. β
Indeed, it is easy to imagine that Falcone had just returned and such a dangerous thing had been stolen. If it was really Falcone's men who stole the device, the consequences would have been unimaginable.
Lucius continued: "Since Mr. Wayne is relieved to leave this matter to you, it means that he feels that he is indeed relieved to leave this matter to you to investigate. β
"Let's hope so."
Roy casually responded, already making a fuss around the neighborhood.
"This place should be locked at night, right?" He asked.
"Of course, sir, state-of-the-art combination locks." Lucius replied.
"Does the guard on duty have a key to get in? Or maybe he knows the password? β
"No one can get in, the password is automatically changed every once in a while, and I'm sure there's no way the guardhouse can get it. In addition, even if someone really had some means to decipher the code, it would not explain the problem of him circumventing the surveillance footage. β
"Then rule out the possibility of coming in through the main entrance for the time being, I see that there doesn't seem to be a window here." Roy said, "So that's probably the entrance to get in." β
At this moment, his footsteps stopped at a vent in the wall about two meters above the ground.
"You think the prisoner came in through the vent?" Lucius asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Not only do I feel it, but I am quite sure." Roy said, "Did you notice that two of the four nails in the four corners of the ventilation grille were removed?" β
Lucius stepped forward to see that there were really only two of the four nails blocking the ventilation duct, so that the ventilation grille became an unlocked door that opened when pushed.
"But if it's not easy to get these two nails out of the pipe, it must be someone with professional training." Roy added.
"Like Batman?" Lucius complained, "I don't think my boss would come and steal his stuff in the middle of the night." β
"Of course Batman can do it, but it doesn't have to be him." Roy opened the ventilation grille as he spoke, hunched over and climbed in to take a look, and found that in front of the pipe was a vertical upward corner, which looked nearly ten meters high. In other words, if an intruder enters through a pipe, he must first jump vertically from a height of ten meters, or with the help of a special tool like Batman's rope gun.
Thinking of this, he crawled out and asked, "Mr. Fox, your technical department must still have a yoyo gun like Batman, right?" Lend me a hand, and I'll go up and have a look. β
