Chapter 4 An Unexpected Appointment
My athletic talent has been somewhat famous since I was a child, and I am the main source of the class in the school sports day. To put it mildly, the points I get alone in each school sports meeting can change the total score ranking of the entire school sports meeting. My favorite sport is soccer and I've always been the main player of the varsity football team. These outstanding athletic talents were naturally brought to college by me, and the endurance and resilience in long-distance running, especially in long-distance running, must have caught the attention of the archaeological team, who was in dire need of a skilled workforce.
Female students in the archaeology department are scarce resources, and girls who come out for field archaeology are even rarer. In this way, the workload of me and another senior naturally increased. Fortunately, for me, a first-time field archaeology student, curiosity overcame fatigue, especially when the first artifact was unearthed, and the sense of accomplishment made me forget my exhaustion.
The excavation lasted several months, and unearthed a large number of iron and bronze objects, as well as some complete porcelain and clay pots. At the same time, this ancient town has also been confirmed to be a post station on the ancient silk road. But there is no new discovery of the huge tripod-shaped bronze, and it seems that there is only one in this ancient town.
With the end of this archaeological work, I went back to school. The biggest takeaway from this archaeological activity was that my mobility was generally recognized, and I was constantly transferred to various archaeological teams for the rest of my university years. I spent almost all of my college career on various archaeological teams.
The archaeology report was my graduation thesis, and after that, I stayed on and joined JD's archaeology team as a teaching assistant.
Perhaps in recognition of my ability to act, I spent almost all my years traveling to field archaeological sites or conducting field surveys. There is no time for archaeology to study in depth. And my first archaeological activity, it seems, ended like that, and I didn't even see the archaeological report.
That's the way it is, when you want to forget something, and this thing is your destined pain, it will appear in front of you when you don't expect it.
At that time, I was in the Three Gorges area with a few experienced archaeological team members and a group of students, collecting and sorting out the local historical sites. Because the demonstration of the Three Gorges Dam has ended, a large number of historic sites in this area will sink to the bottom, and this time is also the last archaeological opportunity for the Three Gorges area. At this time, a phone call transferred me to Xinjiang.
As soon as I got off the plane in Korla, a military jeep pulled me out of town. In the front seat were two servicemen, including a driver, who were polite and silent, and did not say a word from beginning to end. I sat in the back row, and next to me sat my colleague who picked up the airport, Song Guilong. The archaeological captain who once worked together in archaeological activities in Gansu. He greeted me very politely, and then asked very self-consciously about the progress of my project in the Three Gorges, but when I asked him why he called me over, he smiled and shook his head.
"Someone will tell you when you get to the place." That's the only answer I got.
Naturally, I was extremely dissatisfied with his reply, but I was even more puzzled by the two soldiers at the scene. The driver was also easier to explain, because some archaeological work, especially in a harsh environment, we will get help from the army through the local government or higher authorities. But the officer sitting next to the driver has been with me and Song Guilong since he picked me up, and when he saw me, he just smiled and shook hands, and his name was introduced by Song Guilong. But he was always by our side, smiling and giving me an inexplicable sense of oppression.
The angle of the rearview mirror was subtle, and he could see the expressions of the two of us in the back seat without having to look back. Of course, this angle also gives me an unobstructed view of his expression, he always looks at me with a smile through the rearview mirror, very kind and very hypocritical.
Song Guilong and I have always talked about the Three Gorges and some other archaeological projects, and even made some private jokes, but the purpose of the trip was never mentioned along the way. I was not stupid, and naturally understood in a moment that the main task of this officer's trip was to supervise the two of us. This made me a little uneasy and interested in my appointment. After all, I was still young at that time, and I didn't know enough about danger, which may have been a trait or flaw in my nature.
The road is long. The military jeep left Korla and boarded a national highway in the direction of Urumqi. I've been in the field for years, but I rarely come to such arid places. In particular, in the past two years, rescue archaeological work has been carried out in the Three Gorges area. The hot and humid environment in the Three Gorges region is in great contrast to the dry heat in Xinjiang. This military jeep is not an old-fashioned 202 military jeep, it has a wider body, an earthy yellow exterior coating, much less noise and speed. The windows on the four doors were rolled down, the dry and hot wind blew on the face, and I didn't feel a trace of comfort, and the air inhaled into the lungs seemed to be carrying fire, and with every breath, I could feel some of the water in my body being washed away. Despite the unbearable heat, not a drop of sweat ran down his face or body. In this dry environment, sweat does not form into droplets and evaporates.
Song Guilong obviously expected it, and handed me a bottle of water shortly after the jeep left the city. "It takes three to five days to get used to the environment here, and these days are the hardest, so it's good to get used to it." After Song Guilong finished speaking, he smiled and patted me on the shoulder.
Those of us who do field archaeological work have an obvious feature, that is, the skin tone is darker, especially the skin on the face is not delicate, which is caused by years of wind and sun. When I saw Song Guilong today and saw the bronzed color of his face, I felt that I could be called a little white face, although my face has also darkened a lot in the past few years. I took a sip of water, looked at him, smiled and nodded in thanks, and suddenly thought that his face was like this, I am afraid that he has been here for a long time.
Most of the archaeological work I have participated in over the years has been in the southwest of our country, which has nothing to do with personal interests and personal expertise, but is arranged by universities and cultural relics administrations. I have been to many places over the years, but the archaeological work of the ancient silk road to the west was only experienced once when I was studying at school, and I have not been exposed to it since. Later, he stayed in school and joined countless archaeological teams, from an unknown archaeological team member, to a leader who can take charge of archaeology alone, and it can be said that he has also come into contact with some hidden things. But archaeological work in Xinjiang has always been a blank spot, and even I, who has a say in major archaeological conferences, don't know that there is any archaeological activity there.
In the past few years, I have met Song Guilong several times, but it is when there are major activities in the academy or cultural relics department, and the meeting is also very hurried, when we are talking to each other, I remember that he seems to be doing geological surveys in the Xi'an area, as if he is assisting the Xi'an Geological Survey Bureau, and some of our JD people have been seconded to the past. Of course, this is all revealed by him, and at the moment, these are all cover-ups, he should always be here, and there should be others. I silently combed through in my heart those peers who had not seen each other often over the years and had the deepest faces.
