The day after George Smiley went to Ascot, he set up his work headquarters at the Islay Hotel in Sussex Gardens, under the name of Barraclough. In terms of location, Islay Lodge is a very secluded place, which perfectly suits his needs. A hundred yards south of Paddington Station, it was one of a group of older mansions, separated from the main road by a line of plane trees and a car park. Cars rumbled along the road all night. But inside the inn, it was eerily quiet, though the incongruous wallpaper and brass lampshade made the place look like a brazier. It's not just quiet in the hotel......
