Chapter XIV
"I mean really, do you have to make it so bright?"
On the way up to the second floor, the dazzling ball of light kept between Lannie and Steven, shaking so much that the former could barely open his eyes.
"Sorry to bother," Dylan's voice said, "there's something following you." ”
Lannie and Ziang turned their heads and looked around.
The staircase behind them was empty, and there was nothing moving in the antechamber, which was mostly lit by a ball of light.
"I didn't see anything." Ziang said.
"Are you going to the second floor?" Dylan asked.
"Uh, to be exact, it's already up." Ziang stepped up the final step and stopped behind Lannie and Steven.
"That thing too." Dylan responded.
Steven's ball of light illuminates the second floor of the Lonely House.
To the left of the crowd is a short hallway. On one side of the hallway there are two doors not far apart, and on the other side there is a whole row of windows embedded in the wall. The window looks out onto a chic balcony. On the balcony were a stowed parasol, two rain-soaked chairs and a rusty metal table.
To the right of the crowd is a large house. The door to this room is ajar, and through the crack you can see a double bed.
Squeak –
The floor on the second floor was loose and sloppy, making a series of noises when stepped on.
Squeak –
However, when everyone stood still, the sound did not stop immediately.
Squeak - Squeak -
The sound moved along the ground, in front of the crowd, down the hallway, and finally stopped in front of the door that was relatively far away.
On the door hung a day-counting sign with a baby holding a large "day" in both hands. Next to this word is a movable box containing three cards with the number "0" printed on them.
"Does the family have children?" Ziang asked.
Before Ziang's question could be answered, the door of the room with the day counting sign was pushed open from the inside by a slender hand. Ziang's eyes were attracted by this hand, but the other party suddenly retracted into the room.
"Kelly?" Ziang walked around the two people in front of him and took a few steps closer to the door.
"Lanny! Move! ”
Behind Ziang, for some reason, Steven suddenly shouted.
Ziang turned around in surprise to see Steven flying towards Lannie and pushing her into the big room with the double bed.
The dazzling ball of light immediately followed the two men who had fallen into the room. The door to the big house then closed.
Ziang's surroundings instantly darkened.
"What's the situation...... Oh! Something pulled on Ziang's neck, causing him to fall backwards into the hallway. He hurriedly spun around on the ground and threw a piece of talisman paper at the other end of the hallway.
The rune paper burst into flames, flew through the empty hallway, and hit the wall at the end.
Something invisible lifted Ziang into the air and threw him towards the door with the day counting card. The door closed with precision, slamming Ziang into the room.
Ziang groped his way up, reached out and rubbed his shoulder. "It's flying around." He muttered in Chinese.
A bolt of lightning flashed through the window, briefly revealing a wardrobe and a wooden crib.
The room was plunged into darkness again.
A faint light appeared in the corner of the wall farthest away from Ziang. Squatting in the light was a thin woman. She curled up and buried her head between her legs. The bangs, wet from the rain, drooped down and blocked her face.
Ziang took out a piece of talisman paper from the pocket of his pants and tucked it between his index and middle fingers. "If you can see the light, it means it's not a real person...... "Right, Dylan?" He tapped the communicator pinned to his ear, "Hey? Are you listening? ”
"You...... Intermittent ...... Signal ......"
There was a lot of noise coming from the communicator.
"What? Can you say that again? Ziang continued to look at the woman, taking a few steps closer to the window.
Another flash of lightning struck through the window.
When the room was dark again, the woman in the corner changed her posture - she had her back to Ziang, her head resting on the junction of the two walls, and her hands hanging straight at her sides.
A loud thunderclap entered the house.
Perhaps because the atmosphere had become a little weird, Ziang subconsciously turned his head and glanced out the window. However, when he turned around, the woman in the corner was nowhere to be seen.
Ziang fumbled back to the door and pressed the light switch on the wall.
As in the antechamber, not a single light was lit as a result.
"Please, I'm not going to make any balls of light." Ziang muttered, and flicked the switch on the wall a few times without giving up.
"Ziang...... House...... The central ......"
There was a cacophony of noises over the communicator again. Because the noise was so loud, Ziang couldn't even tell if Dylan was talking.
"The center of what?" Ziang took a few steps forward and raised his hand holding the rune paper.
A small flame ignited at the tip of the rune paper, illuminating the area near Ziang.
Ziang stopped in the middle of the room and looked around.
The woman who had appeared earlier was now gone.
This room is not big, and the furniture and furnishings are relatively simple, even a bit like it has only been half-renovated. On the side wall of Ziang is a closet with a single door. This wardrobe is made entirely of wood and has a polished surface. Strangely, on the side where the door can be opened, the upper and lower corners of the door are ground into a semicircle. In order to fit this strange door, the inner frame of the cabinet was also nailed with two curved wooden panels.
A piece of rune paper flew towards the closet, wrapped around the handle, and pulled open the strange door.
There are only a few wooden hangers hanging in the cabinet. These hangers are made of the same material as the cabinets, and the surface is also polished to be quite smooth without a trace of edges and corners.
On the floor next to the wardrobe stands a crib with a colorful blanket on which a handmade puppet rests.
“…… Room Center ...... Changes in consciousness. ”
The communicator was again heard staccato talking.
"Oh-" Ziang nodded understandingly, "Understood." It's a situation where you know what you're going to see and you know you're not going to be scared, but you still don't really want to look at it. He slowly tilted his head and looked directly above him.
The woman who had appeared earlier was lying on the ceiling. She spread her limbs wide open and pressed her forehead against the roof of the shed. Her hair didn't fall down, but fell around her head in reverse.
"I thought she was going to look at me face down." Ziang muttered.
Little by little, the woman's body melted into the ceiling. A white glow emanated from where she had sunk in, and spread down the ceiling, soon filling the four walls of the room.
The originally dark room became more and more dazzling at this time. Everything in the room was drowned in light.
Ziang narrowed his eyes and raised his hand holding the talisman paper in front of him.
"Ahh
The talisman paper that had been burning burned to Ziang's fingertips, which also made him scream. With a flick of his hand, he threw away the unburned part of the rune paper.
The white glow gradually dissipated. Ziang's nursery was also missing.
When Ziang opened his eyes again, the place where he was had turned into a peaceful town street, and he himself was standing on the sidewalk by the side of the road.
The morning light poured down from the sky and lit up the entire neighborhood.
There was a plane tree standing next to Ziang. The leaves of this tree did not shake in the slightest, and it did not look very realistic.
Not far from the tree is a school bus parked on the side of the road, full of teenage children. The sound of children's laughter kept coming from inside the car, but when they looked inside through the window, the children were also still.
A little girl stepped out of a house. She put her hands at her sides, supported the strap of her school bag, and stepped onto the sidewalk where Ziang was.
Just as Ziang was trying to make sense of what was in front of him, the little girl went straight through his body.
As she walked to the side of the school bus, the little girl paused slightly and continued walking.
"Uh, can anyone hear me?" Ziang said, "I need ...... A bunch of explanations. ”
This time, there was not even a murmur.
A little boy jumped off the school bus and ran briskly in front of the girl. After seeing the other party's sullen expression, he stood in place for a few seconds, pulled a certain distance from the other party, and then followed the other party.
Ziang ran towards the two children, but before he could take a few steps, he was stopped by an invisible hard object. He reached out and fumbled in the air, vaguely feeling something in the shape of a wardrobe.
"What for?!" The girl stopped, turned her head, and said angrily.
The boy also stopped. "Last night, I heard the sound of falling things again."
"So what?" The girl raised her tone slightly.
"Did he hurt you?"
"What can you do if I say it's hurt? Help me kill him? ”
The boy looked at the girl's home, then scratched his head, "No, I don't dare. ”
"Stop following me." The girl continued to walk forward.
The boy ran a few steps and grabbed the girl's arm. The other party immediately shook off his hand.
"What are you doing?!" The girl shouted.
"I just, I don't want you to have that, bubbles." The boy shouted.
"What?" The girl frowned.
"It's like this."
The boy held out a hand to the girl. The other party dodged to the side again.
"Look, bubbles." The boy continued, "My mom had the same thing. She was cheated out of some money by a homeless man. No, not a real tramp, a pretending ...... I don't quite know. After that, she hated all the people who wore procrastination, and was not even willing to approach them. That is not true, though. Ms. Page is a very good person. You know, the one that lives under the bridge. She always reminded me to tie my shoes so I didn't trip over. ”
The girl looked impatient.
"Your bubbles are about to appear, too." The boy continued, "I didn't take the school bus, and I deliberately distanced myself from everyone. At present, I am not able to help you much, but I will do my best to stop this, in order to prevent you from trusting anyone again one day in the future. ”
Intense white light erupted from the boy's face.
Once again, the entire area was engulfed in light.
"A bunch of explanations, a bunch of explanations." Ziang narrowed his eyes and muttered.
The light faded. The scene around Ziang changed again.
The peaceful town streets were replaced by a fairly bright room. The walls and floors of this room are neatly tiled, and the old ceiling is fitted with a glowing incandescent lamp.
Next to each wall of the room, there are several toilet cubicles. These compartments formed a circle, trapping Ziang in the middle.
