Text: Chapter 6
Looking west from the parking lot, most of the view is blocked by the exterior walls of the residence halls.
The gate on the east side of the building is only a dozen steps away from the parking lot. Outside this door, students in pairs and groups are holding umbrellas, talking to each other. The street lamps mixed up the lights of police cars coming from the parking lot, illuminating the several cordon tapes hanging outside the door.
The rain was getting heavier and heavier, and the sky was completely darkened by dark clouds.
Kurt walked out of the parking lot and headed straight for the side door of the building. A man in a police uniform hurried up to him and slapped a waterproof file bag on his chest.
Before Kurt could take the bag, the officer stepped closer and put his face to Cotter's ear.
"I strongly advise you not to go in." The officer said solemnly, "It has taken me a lot of effort to convince the people above to hand over the information. What do you think about the rest of the bureau by showing up so rashly?! ”
"The superficial message is that I don't believe you can do a good job of on-site investigation." Kurt tucked the file bag under his arm, "As for the idea that came up, it was probably 'Midhoff is such a self-aggrandizing bastard'. Both make sense based on the current situation. He tried to get around the police officers who were in the way, but were stopped by the other party reaching out.
"Listen, Professor," the officer softened, "and we're grateful for your help. If necessary, we will reach out to you again. If not, I'm sorry, but you're just a nosy citizen. So, no, you can't go in this time. ”
Kurt pressed his forehead and swept away the rain hanging from his sideburns. "The killer was carrying a toolbox," he said lightly, "and no one figured it out." ”
The officer looked surprised.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Kurt pushed away the hand standing in front of him, lifted the cordon, and walked into the side door of the building.
Inside the door is a wide hallway, and on one side of the corridor is a row of glass windows on the wall that open out into a lounge.
In the center of the lounge was a long blood-stained table. In the corner of the table, a large amount of blood can be seen. The other chairs, as well as a small cabinet and a full set of sectional sofas, were pushed against the wall.
A middle-aged man in a black coat gathered in the corner of the lounge with several police officers, bowing his head and discussing something. When "Black Coat" saw Kurt through the window, he immediately motioned for the others to stop talking, and then walked briskly to the entrance to the break room, blocking the open door.
"Sheriff Gretel," Kurt paused outside the door of the break room, "please move your stomach." ”
"Charlie!" The middle-aged man, who was addressed as a sheriff, ignored Kurt and turned his head in the direction of the side door.
The police officer who had stopped Kurt earlier ran over. "He said he knew why the killer was carrying a toolbox."
"What I'm saying is," Kurt leaned over and squeezed into the break room, "you don't know. Instead of going to the long blood-stained table, he bent down and circled the edge of the room. As he passed by the sectional sofa, he leaned forward and opened the small cabinet next to the sofa with the tip of his shoe.
The cabinet, which was only calf tall for Kurt, was empty, and a small keyhole could be seen in the door. In such a common room, it looks more like a useless decoration. However, there is not much dust on the inside and outside of the cabinet.
"People who are so big can't find something that doesn't cause trouble to people." Sheriff Gretel walked up to Kurt and said angrily, "Be smart." With a case like this, there's no room for you to play a detective game. ”
"Totally understood." "Even if there are a lot of suspicions," Kurt replied calmly, "and he looked around the lounge again, "and you can't make the case look like a movie." Since Donald burned the dead in public, all you have to do is arrest him and ask him for clarification. ”
"It doesn't take long for a mere maintenance worker." Sheriff Gretel said, "His wife is quite funny about Donald being hanged and then the body disappearing." There's probably something hidden here. I wanted to go to her house again and ask her, but the road was blocked by the army, saying that something was leaking. In fact, I don't need to ask to know that Donald, who ran away, drove away from the family's car. In order to conceal this, his wife made up a bunch of confusing words. I'm sure he'll be caught if he doesn't get out of a few states. ”
"I bless you from the bottom of my heart." Kurt replied faintly, turning and walking towards the door of the break room.
"What? So little nonsense this time ?! Sheriff Gretel looked at Kurt's back as he left and said in surprise, "I thought ......"
Things are going a little different from what Sheriff Gretel had thought. Leaving the lounge, Kurt did not walk towards the side door of the building, but walked in the opposite direction.
Sergeant Gretel let out a rough breath through his nose and gave the officer named Charlie a wink.
Charlie quickly ran a few steps and caught up with Kurt, who was pacing towards the other end of the hallway.
"Almost." "The blockade of the scene is almost over, so don't embarrass the sheriff." ”
Kurt walked straight to the end of the hallway, not responding to Charlie's words.
There is a women's toilet at the end of the corridor on the right side. The fluorescent lamps on the roof of the area were removed, leaving only a backshell and a few exposed wires.
With the light coming from the front of the hallway, I could barely see the door to the women's bathroom. If you look a little closer, you can see that underneath the female logo on the door panel is a slightly darker box than the surrounding color.
Kurt glanced at the box, then pushed the door open and walked in.
"Huh?" Charlie pointed to Kurt's back, "Huh?!" He pointed to the female sign on the door, and then somehow followed the other again.
The interior of the women's restroom is not large, and even along the diagonal of the ground, you can only walk ten steps. There is a sink on the wall facing the door, and a large mirror is installed above it. There are three compartments lined up against the wall on the right, and nothing is installed on the wall on the left. The four walls and floors are covered with smooth tiles, while the ceilings look a little old in comparison.
"Professor, we all know you're acting weirdly," said Charlie, "but this time you've really broken the limit." ”
Kurt pushed the baffle of the outermost compartment, then walked over to the washstand, inspected the exposed water pipes, and finally landed on the empty wall.
"Either tell me why," Charlie continued, "or leave now." ”
Kurt turned around and walked briskly out of the women's bathroom. This time, he walked straight through the hallway and out of the side door of the building, without looking at Sheriff Gretel again.
"Wait, wait." Charlie rushed into the rain and caught up with Kurt, "This time, I did my best. He pointed to the file bag that Kurt had tucked under his armpit, "which contained information about the victims, photos from the scene, and ......."
"Ask what you want." Kurt interrupted Charlie.
Charlie pursed his lips. "The girl I saw last time, Emilia, or something...... Is she okay? ”
"Very good." Kurt said lightly.
"I wasn't trying to ask about her." Charlie immediately responded, "I'm just, curious, how could a girl like her ...... I mean, how can someone of your stature have a relationship with a girl who is less than half your age? You can't have a common topic. ”
"Emilia is," Kurt paused slightly, "a nurse, and I'm a psychologist. Together, we will discuss the physical and mental health of patients. This is not surprising at all. He walked straight into the parking lot.
"It sounds like a lie made up," said Charlie, "and it doesn't make it up at all." ”
"Exactly." Kurt walked over to a white van, "There are some things I won't answer properly, and you shouldn't ask." ”
"How do you drive a car like this?" Charlie asked, pointing to the van in surprise.
"To hide a freak in the carriage." Kotra opened the cab door and sat in the car, "No one is better at doing field research than him, but he only wants to stay in a confined environment." ”
"Oh, that's really ......," Charlie scratched his head, "rather a joke that is not easy to understand." Interestingly, though, I do know a guy who likes to hide in enclosed spaces. ”
Kurt closed the door and drove the car out of the parking lot.
The cab of the van is divided into two separate areas by a baffle with the rear compartment. The baffle is equipped with a small window that can be opened horizontally.
"Mission accomplished, Mr. Midhoff." Dylan, who was in the car, opened the window and stuck his head into the cab, "No unusual change in consciousness detected." Where to go now? Do you want to find the rest of the team? By the way, thank you for opening up the permission for me, the guild's database really has all kinds of spiritual knowledge. By the way, the person Charlie was talking about was actually me, and we had ......"
Kurt backhanded Dylan's head back into the compartment and closed the movable window again.
