Chapter Fifty-Eight: A Battle of Wits and Courage
The overcast sky was pouring rain, and the sky was darker than dusk, and the whole world was only the sound of rain falling on the ground.
Fern trudged through the rain, the dense raindrops blurred his vision, and his cloak couldn't cover the rain at all, and his whole body was soaked. A cold wind blew, making Fern shiver, but he was still walking slowly, looking for something.
Suddenly, a vague figure appeared in front of him, and Fern recognized the slender figure through the rain curtain.
"Quiai!" Fern shouted, dragging his heavy body forward.
The figure didn't stop, and in the rain Fern couldn't even see if her footsteps were moving, but no matter how hard he tried, the distance between the two didn't change.
The rain was getting heavier, the muddy road was full of puddles, and Fern stepped into a knee-deep puddle and fell to the ground. The rain dripped down his eyelashes and down his neck.
"Quay!" Fern braced himself on, splashing mud on his face, but the figure didn't stop.
Despair filled Ferne's body, almost knocking him to the ground, and the rain poured down on him, as if he were drowning in the bottomless waters, and the feeling of suffocation choked his throat.
Suddenly, a rapid ringing exploded in his brain, pulling him up like a lightning bolt piercing the haze. Fern sat up from his bed, the water that filled the world dissipated, and he was able to breathe again.
Silver moonlight shone through the crack in the window, like a silver thread. There was silence in the house, and the night chirping of insects outside the house sounded from time to time, which made people feel that this was the real world.
Fern looked nervously to his side, Queai still sleeping quietly on his side, his chest slowly rising and falling rhythmically. Before he could recover from the dream, Fern had already jumped out of bed, knowing that the bell was a warning that Quai's barrier had been triggered, and that only he could hear it in order to give Quai a better rest.
Since they were both sleeping in kimonos, and the sword was beside him, Fern had quickly reached the window and peeked out through the crack in the window. I saw three figures on horseback approaching slowly, one of them wearing a wide hat.
Fern quickly woke up Queai, and the girl was still sleepy-eyed. "What's the matter, Fern, are you leaving?"
"It's Karina, they've found it. Fern picked up the Guardian Staff and picked up the sword in his left hand.
"Karina, how did she know we were here?" Quiai rubbed his eyes and picked himself up.
Fern stood behind the door, "It seems that her two guards are very good at tracking, and I underestimated the enemy." ”
Quiai straightened up his crumpled clothes. "So what are we going to do? Escape through the window?"
"I'm afraid not. Fern listened intently to make sure that no one was outside the door before continuing, "There is no hope of forcing a force escape from the three of them, we must use some strategy." ”
"Scheme?" Quiai tilted his head to look at Fern.
"Yes, do you remember the barrier I asked you to set up earlier? Fern opened the door gently. "Let's go, meet them. ”
With a look of surprise on his face, Quiai followed Fern downstairs, and there were only a few dozen steps to the door, but Quiai felt as if he had walked all night.
When I opened the door, there was peace outside, the dark sky was clear, the moonlight was unbridled on the earth, and the chirping of insects lingered in my ears. If it weren't for the three people standing in front of them, it would have been an unforgettable night.
"I thought you'd run all the way to Durham before you stopped, but I didn't expect you to be able to hold it here. Karina stood in the middle, and Karel took the reins.
"I didn't expect you to catch up so quickly, I thought you were sleeping. Not to be outdone, Fern was not to be outdone.
"We did rest for a while, and no one would be able to survive a night of sleep at the Mage Tower. Karina moved slowly. "Apparently you are more tired than we are, and your odds are low by my predictions. ”
Quiai hid his hands in his cloak, and the night here was already cold. "Although you have one more person, it must not be so easy to defeat us. ”
"Oh yes, do you believe it yourself, Quiai?" Karina stopped. "But to be honest, I don't want to make a big fuss, after all, you two are only good for me to live, as long as you hand over the Staff of the Guardian, I'll let you go. ”
Fern took a step forward. "Without further ado, let's let the horses come. ”
A look of dissatisfaction flashed across Karina's face, and then she quickly returned to normal, turning her head halfway to the left and stepping forward in understanding.
The young swordsman drew his sword, held it in both hands, and before Fern could speak, he suddenly rushed forward. The speed of the speed was very fast, and his thin body was more flexible than ordinary people, and he rushed in front of Fern in an instant.
With a cry of exclamation, a cold light flashed, and Fern had already dodged the sword. The attack did not stop, and the attack rained down. Instead of fighting back, Fern dodged the attack with the help of the moonlight, and at the same time relied on his position to lead the other party to retreat to the left side of the house, and in a short time the two had left the front of the house and came to a wasteland with only weeds. Finally Fern drew his sword, and a counterattack temporarily fended off the attack, and the two stood facing each other, both gulping in on the fresh air.
Queai followed suit, and Karina paced unhurriedly, Karel leading the horse behind her, her face serious.
"Do you think you'll be able to run away like this?" Karina, looking at Fern disapprovingly. "Saka's youngest elite swordsman, not to mention Karel, who has yet to make a move, you can't escape under their control. ”
Fern straightened up, recovering from his fighting stance. "One-on-one is not interesting, why don't you go with the disease, and I will fight with Quiai, so that you can see the cooperation of the Wallis mage and the swordsman. ”
Karina frowned, but didn't refuse. "I've heard of the induction between Mage Wallis and the Swordsman, so it's good to see it today. As he spoke, a astrolabe appeared out of thin air in his left hand.
Fern glanced back at Quiai, the girl nodded earnestly, and the next second Fern rushed out, his target was not Wai, but Karina, who was further away.
Raising his sword and running towards Fern to intercept it, he only ran two steps but caught a glimpse of a flame flying towards him out of the corner of his eye, so he had to brake hurriedly and jump backwards with all his might. Several fireballs pounced on him, pushing him farther and farther away from Karina, and he looked anxiously at Karina, who was already in front of her.
Fern swung his sword at Karina, and just as the sword was about to touch her, the astrologer's form suddenly blurred, and then moved behind Fern like a shadow. Fern sensed something strange behind him, and there was a loud crash, but he didn't get any impact. Seizing the gap, Fern turned around and slashed, his sword slicing through the air, only to see that Karina was already standing beside him.
"Very well, your cooperation is quite subtle, but ......" Karina held up the astrolabe in her hand. "I'm getting a little tired of it, let's stop here!"
As soon as she finished speaking, the astrolabe burst into blue light, enveloping Karina and Ji in it, and the semicircular light was dotted with complex star maps. With the astrologer's "drink", the blue light quickly exploded outward, and it was about to affect Fern and Queai.
However, it was as if there was an invisible wall blocking Karina's surroundings, and the blue light was blocked several yards away from Fern until the light faded and did not break through the barrier.
"Now, Quiai!" Fern shouted, sword raised and ran towards Karel, who ran after Fern as he cast his magic. Karel calmly watched Fern rush at him, and waited until he was almost in front of him before drawing his sword. However, before he could swing his sword, Fern retreated and ran to the other side, followed by several fireballs with a scorching aura.
Karel had to dodge the fireball, but the horses scattered in fright, and by the time he had come to his senses, Fern had run to his mount, cut the reins with his sword, and jumped up.
Quiai also ran over, and the fireball that had been cast in an instant made her panting, and Fern pulled her onto her mount and ran without saying a word.
Karel tried to stop them, but all three of their horses ran away, unable to catch up with the fleeing two on their own feet, while Karina and Ji were trapped in the barrier, and the astrologer's face was contorted with anger.
