Chapter 159: Penetrant
The pain in Zach burned as he sat down to ponder. The pills he had did not work on the wounds, because the poisonous gas in his body stubbornly refused to dissipate. The Magic Doctor examines the wound after the fighting has subsided, and he is sure that the problem is not the gas itself, but the fact that the gas contains some knives.
This reminded Zach of an earlier battle, where the hand that had been punished by nature had rotted in less than a second from the place where the so-called world had rotted from the place of decay that God had summoned. Zach believes that there is a good chance that the undead leader has a high-level, even top-pointed, knife associated with death or decay, which is why his wounds do not heal, but keep trying to spread in his body.
His only consolation was that the vitality generated by the way of the tree alleviated his problems to some extent. He did not really heal, but it managed to stop the spread of the poison gas and keep it under control in the wound. However, this meant that he had to use a knife a lot, and he still had to walk around with his wounds.
He now sits in a secluded courtyard of his mansion, slowly reviewing the events. He was in no mood to see the restoration of the city walls or to appease the angry citizens. After he killed the last leader yesterday, there wasn't much fighting. After a while, he realized that the array was active again, and he didn't hesitate to activate the town protection array.
It secures the town and also allows the weary Valkyrie to kill the zombies with their bows and arrows from the safety of their shields to gain some cosmic energy. It is also possible that he set up defensive arrays to ensure that the final attack would not arrive from the appropriate forces.
Until then, though, the losses weren't insignificant. They lost Yanos, 7 demon warriors, and 9 Valkyries. Some of the cheeses also died, but Zach wasn't worried about them because they weren't his official subjects yet. Most of the losses occurred in the area attacks of the Rockman leader, although some of the knights died by mistake.
Alin said that the losses were acceptable, as most of the untested squads suffered heavy losses in the first battle. Their deaths will be the basis for the survivors to keep each other safe. Still, Zach is saddened that many of them are dead because he has just put them under his wings. He's already told them so much when they sign up, but talking about it and seeing it actually happen are two different things.
Instead of helping with the repair work, Zach focused on his wounds. He constantly tries to heal himself with his knife. He was also waiting for news from Carllin, but he didn't have much hope. Other than that, he's just waiting for the timer, waiting for the task to reach zero. He hadn't received his reward yet, and he thought he would get it as soon as the timer was over.
His wound can be considered poisonous, although it is a combination of a knife and a transformed poisonous gas. He needs a special type of potion to heal his wounds, just as a special poison needs a special antidote. There are more advanced elixirs that can heal most types of wounds, but these are extremely expensive and difficult to obtain.
Another option is to find a suitable therapist who specializes in purifying Mima. There were no such people on the island at the time, but perhaps they could be found in border towns close to the invasion of the undead. But in a few days before the agreed time, Mr. Bernard was about to open the portal, so this option was still unavailable. He also didn't want to pin his hopes on the healers who were waiting for him to go.
Left behind the Tree Knife. He kept circulating the warm energy generated by the fractal of the tree in his chest, while recalling his hallucinations. He did have a good catch, but his meditation was interrupted as he felt the shadows in the building condense, which made Zach frown.
"So, do you want to talk?" said a familiar voice.
"What do you say?" Zach asked without opening his eyes.
Ogras replied: "In fact, you immediately think that I ordered Janos to attack you.
"I don't know what's going on, so I'm not going to risk it. It was you who taught me to be careful with friends and foes," Zach said calmly. "I still don't know what's going on in your scheming head. β
"Don't worry, I'm happy with our current arrangement. When you're standing in the light, I can move freely in the shadows and take all my attention off me," Ogras whispered. "I even lost an arm for the city, and you should know where my allegiance is by now. β
"I know, thank you," Zach replied as he opened his eyes and looked down at his hand.
Neither of them said a word, and the silence lasted in the small courtyard for a while, and Zach slowly closed his eyes again.
"We've got him, you know. Janos. "Well, real Janos," Ogras said after a moment.
It really made Zach open his eyes to the demon. Ogras looks a lot better than he used to, but his left sleeve is still visibly empty. He also had a burn on his throat that hadn't fully healed.
"Really, he's still alive? wasn't that a puppet corpse just now? how could a fanatic take his place?" Zach asked, frowning.
"He fled back to the camp and was followed by a group of priests. They caught up with Janos and tried to burn him to death with ferocious fire. Yanos used his last cosmic energy to create an illusion where he was burned alive while he used the escape skill while digging a hole underground," Ogras said.
However, by the time he covered the entire church camp with his ultimate hallucination, he had been overdrafted. "He fainted as soon as he got underground," the devil continued, snorting.
"So they thought he was dead, and one of them was formed, convinced that Anos would not come back," Zach said, and the demon nodded in response.
He was relieved to hear that there really was no second betrayer among the generals. Mr. Zhuang had already told him yesterday that something strange might have happened, but he couldn't be sure.
"Where's the boulder?" Zach asked. "Have they been destroyed?"
"Ruined? No, I asked Kaulin to sell it for 2 million Nexus coins. If you want to destroy someone else's territory, they are not bad weapons. It's a pity that we can't store them properly," Ogras said.
"Great," said Zach, who is always happy to make a little extra money. "What about zombies?"
"Most of them died. Some slipped away somewhere, but the cheapest should take care of them," Ogras said. "The only trouble left is that we don't know if there are more fanatics in town. I didn't know those lunatics were so cunning. I always thought they were meat heads, running around, burning everything to the ground, leaving nothing behind.
"The fact that they were able to infiltrate our town, capture Adelan, and disguise themselves as Janos proves that they are much more cunning than that. It was a real headache because we didn't really know if there were still them on the island. However, I saved you with a real interrogator.
"How do you know? Do we have a way to expose the spy?" the monk didn't even return to his true self after his death," Zach asked.
"We don't have any way yet, but I'm asking the Sky Gnomes to get a quote from the Ten Thousand Eyes Pavilion from a dossier on this matter. "It could be quite expensive, but we probably won't have a choice," Ogras grimaced, replying now that only real people know about the question I asked. β
"What was the first thing you said to me?" Zach asked suddenly.
"I said, 'You natives are really savages and aggressive,'" Ogras replied.
"Who's the shipyard foreman?" Zach followed, not losing the beat.
"Calent, from what you told me, he's a spider golem. "No, I haven't seen him myself," Ogras replied, rolling his eyes.
Zach just nodded in satisfaction.
"What does it mean to have no choice?" Zach asked.
"So far, our town is still small, so I'm sure we can interrogate each one individually and hopefully catch more people in hiding," Ogras said. βγ But this ability poses another problem. Who knows what they've done in the world over the last few months? Are the people we've met in New Washington human?"
Zach felt a chill in his heart. When he realized what Ogras meant more broadly. However, he soon calmed down.
"They should be. The officials got there with teleporters, they couldn't be intruders," Zach said hesitantly.
"Maybe, or maybe this shift has enabled them to use teleporters, who knows? What about Thomas, the big boss, what about the Marshall clan members, where they live, and where they live, instead of going to an exciting auction, they can be everywhere," Ogras retorted.
When Ogras talks about it, it sounds like a harrowing thing, and worse still, there may be hidden fanatics in the ranks of humanity who have cleverly pushed the government to a point of no return so that it can later be annexed by the Cohort Church without any organized response.
"And what do you suggest?" Zach asked.
"We're waiting for the blue mongrel's words. We need to know more, including Port Atwood and our relationship with the rest of the world. If the infiltration skills demonstrated by fanatics on our island are widespread, then we can't trust anyone," Ogras said with a sigh, but quickly perked up. "Besides, it's time to take some dividends out of Karlin. β
Zach could only agree, and stood up with a grunt. His body suddenly ached, but he could only endure it, despite the sheen of sweat on his forehead. At least he learned to use a tree knife while walking, so he could keep his wounds under control while traveling.
Ogras is very right about the dividend. He has held a stake in the consortium for some time, but the gnomes have yet to come up with a single Nexus coin so far. The only thing he got before the waves hit was Β£6 million. That's not profit, it's part of the money that the gnomes owe him.
As the two slowly made their way through the town, many people sneaked a glance at them.
"Why are people staring?" Zach whispered to Ogras, who was walking beside him.
"Things are a little tense. You are not the only one who thinks that a coup d'Γ©tat took place in this wave. It's a little tense between races now," Ogras said with a shrug. "Hopefully seeing us together will alleviate the rumors. β
The visit to the Carlin house took more than an hour, but at least they left satisfied. Zac's private reserves have swelled to a staggering 48 million Nexus coins, and this is after $15 million in informational letters were paid. This could have been more, but Zach chose to keep all of Etherblum in order to train himself and his troops.
The bundles of magic straw that Carllin and Ogras bought in New Washington were worth about 30 million Nexus coins. However, Zach doesn't have much money to spend on him right now, and he feels that it would be best to use these herbs to make body refining balms for his people.
The letter from the Thousand Eyes Pagoda is a personalized question, and Cowling asks two specific questions in the letter. One is how common it is for priests of the Long Knife Church to have shapeshifting abilities. The other requires a method of identification.
The first answer cost 5 million Nexus coins and the second 10 million. Zach wanted to know how much money the information network was making, if two simple answers were that expensive. The Church is a huge organization, and the information they ask for shouldn't be a big secret in the multiverse, yet they make easy money.
It turned out that while this was not the main legacy of the church, there were quite a few infiltrators in their ranks. In a standard invasion, one can expect more than a thousand such people. They were mostly used when the indigenous people were strong and organized and needed some planning to purify the earth.
The second answer is simple. It tells them to feed everybody one by one. To most people, this is harmless, but to lizardmen, it's like cyanide, even if they are an E-class powerhouse. Zach didn't have any roots at the time, but that was fairly common, so Carllin was already trying to get a bunch.
The only downside is that Zach doesn't know if there are only lizardmen in the church. Apparently there was only this species on the island, although he hadn't actually seen the fanatic. After Ogras's successful attack killed most of them, including their high priest, they never carried out a real attack on the town, instead, they failed by invading.
In fact, the reason for O'Gras's absence after a break was that he started to invade again as quickly as he could. Instead of killing a horde of zombies for a little contribution, he chose more powerful fighters, each of whom gave him a lot of points.
The warriors and Mega People of the church are like demon warriors in that they are actually level 75 and give a huge amount of energy and coins. The prize money has apparently also shifted to contribution points.
The only reason Ogras didn't overtake him was that the third wave actually took only 4 hours. On top of that, it took us a few hours to clear out the ruthless zombies, but when the third boss died, the mission was considered complete.
The third wave is, in a sense, a test of raw energy. The system sent three power plants and their personal armies, and at the same time it blocked any defensive or offensive arrays. There is no way to turn it into a defensive siege, because a wall can't stop the attackers, and if Zach runs, his mission will fail.
The only true way to accomplish it is to have superior Force. The results are clear. Two of the leaders were killed, and the third was forced to flee before his death.
However, Zach's side wound reminded him that victory was not as obvious as it seemed.
