Chapter 10: The Hour of Truth

"Push, putt, push

The training dummy let out a loud "snap" and split in half as several stone-tipped magic missiles shattered its wooden surface, firing a cloud of debris.

The area around the dummy then flickered, and the magic shield was opaque with dust, rock, and various sediments.

Bang! Bang!

When the missile shattered, the mana shield remained motionless, but a part of it became shattered where the shell hit, penetrating some of its exterior and sending out spiral-shaped fragments that bounced off the inside.

The instructor announced.

"Do you want to try again?"

"No, sir, I believe this is my current limit," the natives declared sadly. He had exceeded the expected spell ten times in a row, but there was nothing he could do about this feeble power. It's a matter of school and affinity.

"Good, you can go. ”

The exams were held in public and before a gathering of spell students who were deemed qualified for field trips, much to Gwen's disappointment. At least a hundred people gathered. Gwen sighed. It's not because she hates speeches or presentations – she likes those – she doesn't like to be judged for the sake of being judged.

Half a day has passed, and half of the students are still waiting for the draw. So far, neither Gwen nor Yue have been selected. Mr. Yue smiled confidently and suspected that the other students were just opening remarks, and the inspectors were saving the best for last.

Although Gwen was skeptical, she could see that Yue's hypothesis had some value. None of the other students with a high level of affinity have yet to show up.

They watched as an air mage slashed down six dummies and marveled at the speed of her smooth acrobatic moves through the obstacle passage. Each element has its own unique advantages, and the Air Mage's defenses proved to be pathetic, her mana shield barely able to withstand the Instructor's two missiles.

That's when a familiar face emerges: Gwen's old childhood friend Deborah gets into an argument with them the day she wakes up, and she walks onto the stage. Ever since their ill-intentioned date, Gwen has kept Deborah from appearing.

Deborah somehow grew taller and more attractive, her trademark long legs sturdier and more sculptural than before. Gwen knew that earth mages all possessed extraordinary stamina, physique, and strength – and those with a high affinity ended up with bodies as solid as rock and carved like marble statues.

Deborah's once-thick russet hair was tied into a knotted ponytail that made her look like a track and field athlete. As Deborah entered, a bold exhale was heard from the crowd. Even though Deborah has always been a queen bee type as a child, she also works hard. During their training, Teacher Gewen and Yue did not hear anything except praise the "geniuses" of the third class.

"Slingshot!"

Deborah starts with a classic offensive transformation spell by firing a pointy ball weighing more than 50 kilograms at the target, and the "Catapult" is the Transformers version of the magic missile. While there is no autopilot, the impact of the spell is much greater. Deborah's wrecking ball arches gracefully in the air and meets the puppet in the midst of a heated marriage. The mannequin was shattered by the shock, emitting a stream of splinters. The stone rolled another dozen meters, and several spare dummies were taken out.

"Slingshot。。。 Slingshot!... Catapult ..."

She chanted incantations one after another, and a pile of boulders leveled the field.

The crowd cheered and applauded, and Deborah didn't even sweat at all.

"I think she has at least a third-degree affinity now. "One teacher said it was very smooth mana conversion, with little delay or wasted potential. ”

"I agree. Gwen heard another teacher speak, and felt a sour, nasal voice.

Deborah then walked into the field. As she walked, her skin turned a dark bronze and became rough and hard.

Bronze-colored skin?bark?that's a second layer of transformation spell!Gwen blinked. Are they already doing second-tier spells?

"Are you sure?" asked one of the teachers.

"Yes, you have my consent," Deborah replied, smiling bravely. "Not my hair though, sir. I'll make it more suitable for field trips. ”

The instructors nodded their heads again and again, and then began.

A barrage of three missiles flew towards Deborah, hitting her chest, arms and legs. She barely flinched as a few pebbles fell. Her earthen armor was still impenetrable.

"Good!" an instructor announced. More shelling ensued, until the tenth attack, when the last piece of armor fell off and Deborah fell to one knee.

She walked towards the presentation table and turned dramatically to cast another spell.

"Stone explosion!"

A scorching glow appeared underneath a dummy, and then six nails suddenly appeared on the pavement, piercing the golden wood, and the torso flew a full ten meters.

Another second-level transformation spell!Gwen's delicate brow furrowed nervously. Deborah is kicking ass.

"Deborah is really special!" said Gwen appreciatively from behind her.

The ratings are consistent.

"Oh my God, number one, we've got sixty of us!"

Gwen saw Deborah turn around and look through the crowd. She felt Yue nervous beside her.

From the opposite side of the assembly, their eyes were closed.

Do you think you have talent? What I have is what hard work brings you, and Deborah's eyes seem to mock them. I'm as good as you think.

"I'm going to enjoy it all. Yue spat on the side of the text, it seems that Debbie needs a good beating. ”

Gwen felt caught between two impulses. She felt respect for Deborah. After all, if Deborah had been a colleague in the company, Gwen herself would have only been complimented by someone who was so bold and dedicated to his craft.

But Yue never left a little untouched.

Here came a few more students.

"You've already shown them?" Wen whispered, watching Yue'er rub his hands.

"I am annoyed that she is more pious than you," Yue roared, baring his teeth. "Watching me shake her world. I wonder what she thinks when she gets her ass ripped by a half-Asian name. ”

"Yue Bai. No. 14002. "Yue Bai. ”

"I'm up!" Yue's appearance drew a jealous gaze and a wanton stare. "See you on the other side!"

"Miss Bai. The teacher nodded, and Xiao Yue walked up to the podium amid applause. Gwen could swear that the crowd was chanting "Joy!

"I'm ready. Xiao Yue turned around and watched those dummies play tricks and I was about to start. ”

"Rockets!"

A dazzling arc flew through the sky like a meteor and hit the dummy. Its power slams the wood into cinematic shards, then engulfs the target in an explosion that leaves only a smoking stump in its wake.

The crowd collectively held their breath.

How did she make the magic missile explode?Does the summoning spell have two phases?

The teacher was full of praise: "Teacher Bai's performance is shocking. ”。

"Think that you can put an unstable particle in the frame of the missile particle. ”

"Yes, but missiles are no longer self-guided," Yue answered honestly. This is beyond the girls' knowledge of basic spells.

"So, there's still some distance before you finish it, are you going to make a signature spell?"

A signature spell is a spell that belongs only to one mage and is not taught in a normal course. Creating unique spells is the hallmark of a skilled mage, and almost all famous mages have their own unique spells.

"Yes. ”

"Then I suggest you have to be patient. The teacher enthusiastically advised, "When you get to college, you will have more resources to reach out to senior tutors who are more comfortable with elemental fire." ”

"Thank you, sir. ”

"You can continue. ”

Yue perked up again, and the air around him became scorching.

"Barrage!"

With a burst of fiery mana, Yue conjured up more than a dozen fire hydrants and fired them at different angles in vertical lines.

A series of explosions shook the ground, littering the dummy with dummies, cutting a deep passage into the shattered bedrock. The fireworks shook the ground, forcing the students to intercept the flying debris with magic shields.

"By magic!"

"Oh my God!" someone screamed in the cacophony.

"Are we really in the high school?"

"Nothing survives..."

The air circulated. All the dummies are gone.

"Unbelievable," one teacher exclaimed.

"Really, it's fantastic," the other agreed.

Despite the high praise from the teachers, they still made important criticisms. Her incomplete signature spell consumes too much mana, it lacks focus, each explosion is inconsistent, and so on.

"Can you continue?" the third asked.

"Yes," Xiao Yue's chest heaved. "One last spell. ”

Yue summons her mana shield.

"Blastproof shield!"

The Fire Mage has an offensive shield that works wonders against melee opponents, but has severe limitations on ranged attacks. When Yue appeared, a glittering shield enclosed her in a half-dome.

"Another signature spell!"

Three missiles came towards Yue Xiao. When the cannonball hits the fire mage's shield, a volatile reaction erupts with orange flames.

The first missile exploded.

The second swept over the shield.

The third pierced her shield and struck Yue on the shoulder. The force of the impact pushed her to the ground.

"Yue!" Gwen shouted.

"I'm fine. Yue waved his hand and stroked her collarbone.

"It looks like the modified spell needs to be improved," one of the instructors commented.

"Yes," Yue admitted. "It's far from ready. ”

"Good idea, if you can speed up your reactions..."

"Indeed..."

"I believe there was a magician at the Sydney Tower who devised a similar spell. Perhaps, if you're interested, I can ask a faculty member to get you in touch with Mags. ”

"Thank you, sir. ”

"I'll be honest with you. Another teacher's criticism was harsher. "You've wasted too much time creating these spells, Yue. The basics are the foundation of spells, and you need to have a solid foundation to dabble in new things. If you don't control them well, these spells can be just as dangerous to your enemies as they are to your allies. My advice is to abandon these illusions, at least for now. ”

Yue nodded solemnly.

"After the field test," the teacher added. "You'll be trained in teams and survival, so focus as much as you can. Don't get distracted. ”

"Yes, I will do my best," Yue replied solemnly,

β€œS”

β€œS”

β€œB”

S stands for Supersede. Achievements that go beyond what can be measured by high-level performance indicators.

The first marker is effective injury.

The second is speed and/or endurance.

The third is defensive and practical.

The fire element is a natural offensive element, although Yue's innovation in trying to use offense to fend off the fire guards is commendable.

Yue returned to Gwen amid the cheers of his peers. However, before she finds Deborah in the crowd and gives her the bird, she doesn't.

"You worried me when the missile came through. Gwen grabbed her friend by the shoulder and poked her arm gently.

"Oops!" Yue said with a smile. "Yes, it's going to swell up. ”

"If only Elvis were here...... Gwen sighed.

"She has one more thing to do. It's a lot harder than we grunt, ha!"

More than a dozen students took their turn, some failed, some succeeded, but none of them met the ratings given to Deborah and Yue.

Gwen waited with bated breath for her turn.

Eventually, it came.

"Gowen. No. 14026. ”

The assembled assembly had neither cheers nor applause for Gwen. Gwen walked up to the podium and met the kind eyes of the three instructors.

"We've heard good news from Headmaster Bartlett," one of them affectionately said, with few quasi-elementalists in action, and very few offensive spellcasters in action. ”

A set of target dummies move into place.

Take a deep breath! Focus. "Go ahead and do it as you normally would," Gwen assured herself.

She turned to face her wooden opponent and tapped Siegel lightly, feeling it burst through her heart. She pointed to one of the puppets rather flamboyantly and uttered the incantation she had practiced a thousand times before.

"Exploding bolts!"

The air is filled with the smell of hot ozone, mixed with erratic positive energy. An electric current diverts the air.

"Smack!"

A flash of light, followed by a thunderous "crackling", filled with light and sound.

Lightning!, the crowd gasped. God's own power, the purest form of destruction.

A cloud of dust rose into the air, obscuring all vision.

Who can survive under the fists of heaven? Such power.

The moment of awe passed.

The dust settled.

The Assembly stared dumbfounded at an intact dummy.

The unrecognizable mute stared at Gwen dumbfounded.

She missed it. Gwensong did not hit the target.

Oh. It's mine. My God. Gwen's mind turned as white as her flashes of plasma.

I didn't hit the target!, she screamed inwardly.

"Did she miss it?" someone asked.

People started laughing.

"She missed the dummy!"

"Oh my God, that's great!"

"Fuck

"What an idiot!"

"I knew she was just a vase!"

Laughter spread like a tidal wave, and some of the students were overwhelmed, and they bent over to catch their breath.

"Quiet!" an augmented auditory spell sounded at the rally.

"Go on," one instructor said don't be so nervous. It's a good performance. ”

Gwen nodded, trying to block out the suppressed taunt between her ears.

Tell them what you can do. Gwen thought to herself. Show the world what you can do.

Her summoning signal exploded, sending a bolt of lightning towards her pipe. Gwen raised her hand, a finger reaching for the sky, then quickly pointed downward.

"Exploding bolts!"

The roar of her incantation resounded across the field. The people around her immediately felt their hair stand still. A vacuum formed above the dummy.

A blue-purple bolt of lightning swept through the air and struck the nearest scarecrow. The wood brightened before it exploded into ten thousand pieces, scattered into ashes and dust. The graffiti was so thorough that not even the stumps remained, only a half-meter-long crate remained.

Before the first arc could disappear, another arc streaked across the sky, erasing the other dummy.

Another one, another one.

Fragments of lightning filled the air, ravaging the world within the spell's range with increasing frequency.

Gwen felt her pool of mana drain away like spring snowmelt, pouring into the blazing white snow.

The excitement thrilled her. I can do more!

The last bolt of lightning struck the ground, a bright light that stunned everyone. The seismic wave expanded from the epicenter, sending out a concentric ring of dust. When these particles settle down, in the staggering of molten sand-glass glass, only the remnants remain.

Gwen felt her knee lose sensation as her mana drained. She stood up by her hair and stood with willpower.

"It's amazing. ”

"Can we do that as high-level mages?" one teacher quipped.

"Of course, but I'm 50 and she's 15......"

The instructors observed the disaster.

It was the same chain-style signature spell Yue used, but with lightning bolts on the element, and a multiple rocket was given a new form. Although this is not yet known, it is an observed phenomenon in which an area full of positive energy produces larger lightning. This means that for each bolt that subsequently hits the same position, the subsequent blow is much stronger.

The question, of course, is, how did Gwen precisely control the direction of the explosion so that it converged?

The students' assembly caused their mouths to fall off the floor.

"Are we still in high school?"

"Of course, the military mage only cares about this powerful?"

The crowd was full of speculation.

Gwen looked at her handicraft with satisfaction. It's really hard for a person who is educated in the scientific method. At one point, she fumbled for a spell that left too many particles of positive energy in the place. She later found out that all her other strikes continued to turn to this particular location. Tests and experiments were assured, and she discovered that she had a knack for directing lightning. From then on, she named her first attack "Bootbolt".

"Can you continue?"

Gwen nodded, summoning a second wind.

She made a circular gesture that formed a shield spell in her mind and channeled the rest of her mana into it.

"Please, I can't take it anymore. "Sir," Gwen replied, gritting her teeth.

This choice is both strategic and necessary.

Only the renouncer can hold the shield indefinitely, and only the renouncer can make a shield for others. For all other mage schools, the shield is the last resort for self-preservation. In a duel or match, forcing the enemy's mage into the "Broken Shield" through the enemy's abandoner is a condition for victory. Once a mage loses their shield, they are just flesh and blood.

Gwen's mana shield is pale blue, with occasional sparks jumping down its side. Like all lightning shields, this is an offensive barrier.

"Ready," the teacher forewarned.

Three missiles screamed in the air and hit Gwen's shield.

The first missile exploded into a bright ball of light upon contact, which was consumed by the capacitive energy of the shield. The second time she passed through the electric barrier, losing her torso. A third person pierced the shield with the sound of broken glass, striking Gwen in the chest, causing her to stagger backwards onto her ass.

"Gwen!" Now it's Yue's turn to worry.

The instructors exhaled. Many spells operate on the basis of a balance of power. In the crime sector, giving up is a difficult and insurmountable thing, but it is weak. Transmutation is versatile, but unusual in terms of defense or offense. Summoners are incredibly aggressive, but often glass cannons.

The verdict was out – and Gwen passed with an astonishing score.

The tension in her whole body was gone. She didn't disappoint Yue, and she didn't let herself down. During the six months of Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, nothing was done but hard work, but it paid off.

Then, the instructor makes suggestions on adjusting Gwen's stamina and stamina spells, discussing possible situations and weaknesses. Gwen listened carefully, noticing their every concern for the future.

"Congratulations Gwen!"

"Well done!"

"Great!"

The crowd finally took a liking to her.

Gwen wanted to come back, but she was so tired that she was dizzy. Her whole body is exhausted and she wants to find a place to rest.

Gwen admonished herself, "I need to work on this cause of mana protection. ”。 The last thing Gwen recalls was returning to Yue before falling in love with her friend.

"Wow, steady!" Gwen heard Yue shout and missed! I'm going to take Gwen to the infirmary!"
