Chapter 15: Camping
By the time Victor and his party got out of the wagon, a rudimentary but orderly camp had been set up.
The camp was built on an open area on the side of the road, the ground was simply leveled, the bushes on the ground had been cut down, and these freshly cut bushes were still very damp and could not be used as direct fuel, so the shrubs were sharpened and planted obliquely on the ground, and a simple defensive fence was made on the perimeter of the camp.
When the camp is pulled out the next day, these fences will be removed and taken away to be used as fences or fuel for the next camp.
Camping in the wilderness in this world is worth it no matter how careful, it is the experience of human beings in exchange for blood and life.
A group of heavily armed mercenaries led the militia, armed with five-meter spears, to patrol the perimeter of the camp. Hand-to-hand combat is too dangerous for militias lacking martial arts, and spears are easy to learn, and several well-trained militiamen can even subdue an 800-pound bear with a spear.
Led by Nelson, Victor and his guests came to the center of the camp, where a simple shed had been erected, which would be where Victor would entertain his guests for dinner.
"Master, it's a bit rudimentary, please bear with me. Victor smiled at Edwin.
"Haha, Victor, we White Tower scholars are all experts at camping. This camp is much better than what I used to camp in. Edwin didn't care, in fact, although the scholars of the White Tower were the children of nobles, they often went out in the field because of the needs of research, and they were indeed not the flowers of a greenhouse.
At this moment, a crisp voice sounded next to him.
"Your Excellency, you are here. ”
Victor looked up, but saw that the young and beautiful Lilia was looking at him with joy and anticipation, it seemed that this shed was built by her.
Victor smiled at Lilia and said, "Fortunately, Lilia. Did you choose this camp?
"My lord, I'm waiting to report back to you. Lilia saluted the scholars, knights, and Nicole, and said, "We carefully surveyed the surroundings, and found no trace of goblins or gnolls in the vicinity, until we found some footprints of fierce beasts, so we chose this open place to camp and cut down the nearby bushes, so as to prevent the beasts from taking advantage of the terrain to sneak up on us." ”
"Well done, Lilia. Victor, who has the soul of a modern man, certainly does not hesitate to praise his subordinates for their hard work, but he does not realize the attraction of his moon elf blood to women.
Sure enough, the mercenary's bright eyes smiled like two crescents, and more than two red clouds flew on her cheeks, which looked very moving.
"Humph!" a low grunt of dissatisfaction sounded from behind Victor, and it was Trainee Knight Nicole expressing her displeasure with Victor. In Nicole's opinion, a lord nobleman should be reserved and arrogant and indifferent and detached when speaking to the people, and praise Lilia with a pleasant face like Victor has no other intentions for the girl mercenary.
Seeing Edwin's teasing gaze, Victor secretly smiled bitterly in his heart, Nicole, a beautiful apprentice knight, is particularly jealous, which may be because of her humble background that causes her to have such an inferior complex and sensitive character.
"My lord, I just hunted a bobtail deer and a few grouses with Hammer and the others nearby, and I have brought you a try. ”
Just then, Gru "Dogleg" brought Victor with a 300-pound bobtail deer and a few fat grouse.
"Nice bobtail, I can put my roast venison to work. The most rare thing is these grouse, the grouse is very delicious, and the grouse in the water season is especially delicious, just in time for us to stew a pot of soup, and add some dried mushrooms to make it even better. Edwin was immediately attracted to the sight of fresh prey dropped on the ground.
Interrupted by this, Victor let out a long breath, and even saw Gru's ugly face with a flattering smile.
However, when Edwin said that he would take care of the prey sent by him, Victor's heart moved.
"Master, are you interested in trying a new way of cooking?" asked Victor with a smile on Edwin.
"Oh, Victor, do you have any new methods? "Edwin, of course, has a lot of curiosity as a White Tower scholar, but it's probably the foodie instinct that piqued his interest.
"Don't worry, I'll arrange it first. "Since coming into this world, what has been eaten is either roasted or stewed, or eaten raw, and Victor has long been tired of it.
Originally, Victor was worried about how to learn more from the old scholars. Seeing Master Edwin's foodie nature, Victor decided to show his hand.
Victor said a few words to Gru, who nodded and walked away with the bobcat.
Victor then tells Lilia to bring some grouses down to slaughter, and tells Nelson to dig a fire pit in the ground.
After a while, Lilia brought over a few slaughtered grouse, only to see that the grouse had been slaughtered, and a hole had been opened in the abdomen, apparently the internal organs had been removed, but the grouse had not been removed.
"Victor, this. . . Well... I mean.. Chicken feathers can't be eaten!" Edwin couldn't help but remind when he saw the hairy grouse.
"Master, new methods are always different, and you will not be disappointed as long as you wait patiently now. ”
Victor decides to hang the old man's appetite and pretends to be mysterious.
Soon, Gru came back with a cut of deer chops and a bag full of things.
Victor opened his pocket to reveal the clay inside, twisted his fingers, nodded in satisfaction, and then wrapped the grouse in the clay and threw it into the dug pit.
"Victor, although the season of water is the season of life, you can't grow grouses like you. Master Edwin watched Victor's actions with a sad expression.
"Master, although I didn't go to the White Tower to study, I also know that grouse doesn't grow in the ground. Victor laughed as he buried the grouse with a stone as the crowd watched curiously, and motioned for Nelson to light a bonfire on the stone.
The roaring bonfire dispels the damp cold in the air and makes it warm and cozy. Victor erected a strange iron table over the fire, with a brush made of rabbit fur and a bottle full of grease on the edge of the iron table.
"Nicole, come and help me line up these deer on this iron plate and flip them so that they don't get scorched. Victor said to Nicole as he greased the iron table.
"Good. Being able to help her sweetheart makes Nicole happy, even though she doesn't have any hope for grouse.
Under Nicole's nimble flipping, the sauce-coated deer steak crackles on the iron plate, gradually emitting a seductive aroma that makes people salivate.
"Alright, please come and taste this sizzling deer steak!" Victor poked the fragrant deer steak with his knife, and just felt that it was already ripe, and said to the people who had been expecting it for a long time.
"It's the best deer steak I've ever tasted! It's amazing! Victor, you've managed to make me forget about the grouse. The old scholar ate and teased Victor at the same time.
"It's really delicious! Also, I think this kind of deer steak is easier to absorb than roast venison. Bruce Knight was also full of praise.
Nicole didn't say anything, but the smile between her eyebrows couldn't hide anything, and the deer steak she had just cooked for Victor was welcomed by everyone, making her feel proud, like a hostess.
Thinking of this, Nicole's face couldn't help but flush, but fortunately it was not conspicuous in the light of the fire.
"Master, remember to save a little appetite for today's main course. Victor said to Master Edwin with a smile.
The campfire was removed, and in the astonishment of everyone, Victor took out the main dishes buried under the stones, and the sintered mud eggs one by one.
When Victor peeled open a mud egg, a fragrance richer than the sizzling deer steak wafted out of the egg, and everyone saw the snow-white grouse inside the mud egg, and there was not a single chicken feather on it.
Edwin took one of the grouses that Victor handed over and took a gentle bite, the tender and juicy chicken turning into a delicacy in his mouth that he had never tasted before.
"I see, when the sintered clay is peeled off, the chicken feathers are also peeled off, and the taste of the grouse is completely locked in the chicken, which is a genius idea. Victor, what's the name of this dish?" Edwin asked Victor after eating a whole grouse in one gulp.
"This is the method I heard from an old mercenary, so I call it a mercenary chicken, how about it?"
"It's a terrible name, but it tastes so good!"
