Chapter 40: The March of Death (9)
"Mom, I really can't walk!" said a little boy who took his mother's hand and looked up with a crying voice.
"Good boy...... You must do it, you must!" The corners of my mother's eyes moistened.
"But...... I really can't walk anymore! With every step I take, it feels like there are thousands of needles piercing the footboard!" the little boy began to cry.
"Are you still a man, wipe away your tears!" the father rebuked, "You must keep going, you can't ask us to put down our sister and hug you!"
"But he's not a man, he's just a little boy...... "The mother wiped tears from her son's tears in distress.
Prince Roland saw everything in front of him! Yes, people are so tired that they can barely walk!
But we can't stop, as soon as we stop, the enemy may chase after us!
"Is there any news from Jedt?" Roland asked, turning his head to the hero beside him.
"No! no enemy was found behind our backs!" replied one of the heroes.
"Well, let's take a break, we still have a long way to go!" said Prince Roland.
For the cavalry, the Silver Horn was so close that it would take them only two or three hours to arrive. But for this group of tired and weak people, the Silver Horn is simply far away!
"If Jade can hold off the pursuers for half a day, our rear road will be safe for the time being!" Prince Roland said, "Then there is only this one place left, I am afraid that the undead will outflank from this place!"
"You've already sent two brigades to build a defensive line there!"
"They may not be able to hold it!" Roland shook his head, "they are just a bunch of farmers and traders, not seasoned veterans or trained professional soldiers...... In this case, I'll bring some people over and take command, and you'll be in charge here!"
"But you are needed here, too! If you are not there, they will have no backbone!"
"But I am needed more there!"
"We all know that even if you go in person, you can't hold it there! The combined combat power of those two brigades is not even comparable to one of the veteran brigades of Jedette!"
"I may be able to hold on if I go!" Roland smiled, "Princess Catherine and I have taught those necromancers a hard lesson, and I hope they haven't forgotten yet! You know, Princess Catherine beat me up when I was a child, and I'm still a little afraid of her......"
The heroes laughed. This group of fierce people know very well in their hearts that if they want to beat a person, they must beat him hard, and that will make him afraid for the rest of his life!
"But it's still very risky! Well, we'll choose half of us to follow you, and the other half to stay here and take care of it!"
"So be it!" Roland nodded, "I hope their commander was once a defeated of my men, so that he might be frightened so that he would not dare to act rashly!"
When Prince Roland and the heroes arrived at the defensive line, the soldiers who were holding on immediately shouted excitedly.
"You're just in time!" the commander immediately ran over and whispered, "You haven't seen their expressions before, they are all worried, as if the end of the world is coming...... I'm so worried they're going to collapse in the next battle!"
"It's not their fault!" Roland also whispered, "They are not soldiers, and we can't expect them to be as brave as soldiers!"
"Your presence has boosted their morale! What could be more honorable than to fight alongside your own leader?"
"I didn't bring you many people, just about twenty of them!"
"Your twenty or so male lions are enough to scare away thousands of antelopes!"
"You're right, I'm not here to fight the undead, I'm here to scare them!" Roland muttered as he pulled a crowd of people.
There is a pool of water in the valley. The cascading waterfall falls into the pool and splashes with flying droplets.
When more than twenty men stripped naked and jumped into the pool to play, the soldiers were immediately dumbfounded.
Oops, is it possible that our Royal Highness the Prince and his heroes came here to swim?
After swimming, some of them began to wash their armor and horses, while others lazily lay down in the grass and sunbathed. Prince Roland is even more desperate, he actually tilted his head and let a hero shave his beard with a sharp and heavy broadsword!
"Are they really not afraid at all?" began to whisper to the soldiers.
"Of course they are not afraid! They are battle-hardened heroes!"
"I dare say they are confident that they will be able to lead us to defeat the army of the undead, which is why it seems so easy!"
"It must be so! Oh, that's great!" the soldiers smiled.
The well-rested heroes gradually gathered around Roland.
"Your Royal Highness, we only saw you so glamorous when you married Her Royal Highness Princess Catherine!" the heroes laughed happily.
"It was a wonderful moment!" said Roland.
"When you reappear in front of Her Royal Highness the Princess, she will surely come to her arms!" joked the heroes.
"It's hard to say!" Roland shook his head, "Maybe she'll have her hands on her hips and her eyes wide and scold, 'Where did you die after so long?'"
"Wouldn't it?" the heroes said with wide eyes, incredulous.
"It must be so...... She's fierce, and everyone has seen it!"
"Hasn't she ever been gentle with you?"
"I'm not going to share this with you!" Roland narrowed his eyes with a smile.
"Your Royal Highness, the enemy's vanguard has already appeared ahead!" the commander hurriedly ran to the edge of the pool to report.
"Let's get started!" Roland jumped up at once.
The army of the undead gathered more and more at the mouth of the valley. Taniguchi, on the other hand, had only Prince Roland and his twenty or so loyal followers.
"That person is Roland!" The undead commander suddenly gasped: "It's really unlucky, I didn't expect to meet him here!
"He's just a tired bunch, and there aren't many of them!"
"Do you think they are tired teachers? they are all in good spirits and shining in armor!"
"This man is very good at using soldiers, and he is very good at ambushing!" the undead commander nodded, "On the Diya border, we have suffered a lot from him! In the Valley of Waterfalls, he defeated half of Degar's army with only a few hundred men!"
The necromancers immediately began to look up at the terrain around them.
In front of them, there is a canyon sandwiched between two mountain peaks, and the road is in the middle of the canyon.
"It's a good place for an ambush, but it's a good thing we didn't venture in!"
"I dare say he's laid an ambush! You see, above the canyon, right there, a corner of the flag looms!"
"They will greet us with rolling stones, sasswood, and fireballs, just as they did in the Valley of the Falls!"
What to do? The necromancers began to look at their commanders.
"Uh, you necromancers, why don't you let the horses come quickly?" shouted from the other side.
"You've got your pockets set up and want us to get into?" the undead commander stepped out.
"Well, I seem to have seen you, is it at the border of Dia?" Roland seemed to recall, "but there are too many people I have defeated, and you may be just one of them!
"I won't go in, Prince Roland!" the undead commander shook his head, "You're very powerful, but your men are a bunch of straw bales! Look, their banners are not well hidden on the cliffs, and there is a lot of sand and dust floating behind you...... That's your cavalry, aren't they?"
Prince Roland angrily looked behind him and began to scold loudly. One of the heroes immediately nodded and galloped away.
"It's true, I didn't lie to you! You should know that I don't have a few people, otherwise I wouldn't have to ambush you, I would have done it face to face with you!"
"You may have only been a few people at first, but not now! Let me guess...... Well, I heard that the hundreds of ships of the Elasia Navy led by Sylvia have already gone to sea and are heading east, and the destination should be the Silver Horn, right? No wonder you are retreating towards the Silver Horn! Your Royal Highness, have you now received her support?"
"I'm talking about you!" Roland shouted, "Are you going to fight or not?"
"Go to sleep, I'm not going to disturb you!" waved the undead commander and began to direct the army to retreat.
"Shall we retreat like this?" questioned one necromancer.
"This is Degar's business, I won't wipe his ass for him!" The commander said: "If my legion is left with only one brigade, then I will become a captain! And you, naturally, will be demoted one level to become a squadron leader!" He paused, and then continued: "If you want to fight, two people will fight together, he will be responsible for attacking Roland's rear flank, and I will attack from the front!"
"I don't understand, Degar should be the first thing Prince Roland needs to think about, how did he come here?"
"Then there is only one explanation, Degar is no longer his henchman! Maybe he has defeated Degar and then turned against us!"
"You're right, Your Excellency, Commander! We should retreat! But how far do we have to retreat?"
"Evacuate for a day!" said the undead commander, "If you stay here, you may be surrounded by him at any point!, keep enough buffer, even if he starts moving, we will have enough time to react." ”
Roland suppressed his inner ecstasy and began to slowly retreat into the canyon.
"Keep an eye on them and see how far they've withdrawn!"
"Yes!" a hero hurried away.
"If this undead commander is telling the truth, then we will be saved! Sylvia is now the naval commander of Erathia, and she has tens of thousands of soldiers and hundreds of warships under her command!"
"I don't think he's lying!"
"Sylvia didn't know where we were...... Maybe she's here to fight pirates, who betrayed her father!"
"Oh my God, that's terrible! If she defeats Captain Jack, who's going to send a ship to pick us up?"
Everyone looked at each other.
"I hope Sylvia can stop by the Silver Horn after defeating Captain Jack......"
"Alas, let's all go and ask the gods to bless you!" said Roland, who was poured cold water on his head and began to lose his temper.
In the evening, everyone finally evacuated Silver Horn.
As you might expect, there wasn't a single ship in the Silver Horn.
"It's a full moon night, has Captain Jack forgotten his appointment today?" the heroes stared at the empty sea.
"Pirates are the most dishonest!" said one of the heroes, spitting indignantly.
"But gold will make them trustworthy!"
"Really, why haven't they come yet?"
"Maybe they've wiped out Sylvia!"
"Alas, Sylvia, what are you making trouble at this time!" the heroes began to reproach.
"Let's go and prepare for defense!" Roland also let out a long sigh: "It looks like we're going to have to hold on here for a few days!"
Under the bright moonlight, the beach reflects dreamy colors. Prince Roland walked alone on the beach, his shadow dragged long, long by the moonlight.
