Chapter 40: The March of Death (8)

Tomorrow is the night of the full moon, will these tired people be able to make it to Silver Horn on time?

As the moon gradually turns round and bright, the surrounding stars dim or even hide. At this moment in the vast wilderness, could the endless torches be the stars falling on the ground?

A group of knights stood on a hillside near the road, looking anxious.

People looked very tired. They had tried to go fast, but it still didn't seem to be fast enough, which made the knights worried about the future.

Prince Roland couldn't help but look up at the moon. The moon was following them, too, and when it came out of sight, the bloody dawn was coming.

"Your Royal Highness, we have inspected the abandoned mines, and the zombies are still locked up, and they have not escaped from the blockade!" said to Prince Roland.

"Very good...... Have you reinforced the gams?" Roland nodded, then asked.

"Yes, everybody is doing it!"

"We should wipe them all out, or they'll join in as soon as the undead army arrives and become a formidable force!"

"Yes...... But we don't have enough time, and we don't have enough strength......" Roland sighed.

"Your Royal Highness, at this rate of marching, even if it reaches tomorrow evening, it may not be able to reach the Silver Horn ......"

Hearing this, everyone fell silent. If you can't reach your destination on time, you know the end result very well.

Maybe it's time to leave the group, or everyone will die! They looked at their leader wordlessly, waiting for him to make a final decision.

"No, I am the prince of Dia, and I cannot abandon them!" Roland said calmly: "If that is the case, then let us prepare for the last battle! Historians will remember that the people of Dia would rather die in battle than be conquered!"

Far behind the group, Jade was holding on to the last of the valleys. It was once a fort built by Dia to protect the interior from pirates who had occupied the Silver Horn.

There had clearly been a big battle here, and there were bones everywhere, as well as ghostly fires wafting around.

Jedt walks up the badly damaged level. With almost every step you take, you can hear the sound of bones being stepped on.

Who were they? human warriors, or undead?

No one cares who the owners of these bones used to be, because everyone is busy. Perhaps by the time the sun rises tomorrow, they too will become part of this pile of bones, gradually dusty and decaying over time, and finally forgotten completely.

"Legionnaire, we've found a few more broken trebuchets!" said an old man, running over and reporting happily.

"Can it be fixed?" said Jedette's face was beaming.

"Of course, what can stump us old men? we can do much more than those reckless young men!" the old man grinned, revealing a mutilated tooth.

"Then do it!" Jade patted the old man on the shoulder, "I look forward to hearing the whistling of them throwing stones tomorrow!"

"Someone's coming!" the old warrior in charge of guarding the door sounded the alarm, and everyone immediately took off the longbow behind their backs.

In the bright moonlight, a fast horse was galloping towards him.

There was only one person on the ride, which made everyone breathe a sigh of relief.

"Open the door, I'm a scout out out on reconnaissance!" shouted the knight as he ran to the gate.

The first person the scouts encountered upon entering the customs was their legion commander Jade Ter, and behind him stood several old men, who were his squadron leaders.

"How's it going?" asked Jedt, taking hold of the horse's reins, impatiently.

"They didn't stop, they marched in the moonlight!" the knight jumped off his horse.

"The undead are tireless!" Jade nodded, "Looks like they don't want us to be idle...... How many people do you see of them?"

"It should be a whole legion!"

The people were silent. With more than a thousand veterans, and the tattered levels under your feet, can you withstand the powerful attack of a formed legion?

"Looks like they want to catch up with us right away, and they don't have bulky siege engines!"

"This is the best news I've ever heard!" Jedette finally smiled, "As long as they don't carry siege engines, we can still hold out for a while!"

The veterans stopped what they were doing and gathered around.

Jedette jumped on a big rock, looked at everyone and said, "Old guys, I don't want to die, I want to marry another wife and have a few more children!"

The old men listened silently.

"Some people want to die on the battlefield, but I just want to die quietly in bed, surrounded by my wife and children......

Look ahead of us! There's a big black oppression, and countless undead warriors are coming! they're not guests, they're trying to kill all of us!

Look behind us! There's a big black oppression there, too! That's our loved ones, and if we can't stop the army of the dead here, death awaits them!

Now, tell me, what are you going to do, like an ostrich in the desert, burying your head in the sand and pretending not to see anything, or like a brave warrior, bravely facing death?!"

"We're old, but we've fought and we're still able to hold swords, and we're still Diya's warriors!" a few of the old men began to shout.

"Yes, no one wants to die, but our death can keep more relatives alive!" Jedert's gaze swept over everyone's faces one by one: "Since Prince Roland and his heroes didn't think about their own safety in order to rescue us, we are fortunate to live one or twenty years longer than them, so why be stingy with our lives?!"

Now, if we retreat, we may not die tomorrow, but the day after tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, we will definitely die the day after tomorrow!

If we want to die, then let this level become our burial place! Our flesh will rot on this level, and we will eventually disappear into oblivion, but people will always remember: right here, on this tattered level, there is a group of veterans who fought bravely in order to cover their loved ones, and exchanged their lives for precious retreat time!

We all know that that day will come sooner or later, and no one can hide from it! Since death is coming, let it come, not to mention that it can make our death more glorious and meaningful!

I'm ready! What about you?"

"We're ready, too!" began to shout some of the old men.

"Why didn't I hear you?—don't you have the strength to shout?—are you really a bunch of old men on the verge of death?" asked Jedette again.

"We're ready!"

This time, Jade finally heard what he wanted. He nodded with satisfaction and said loudly: "Then, let's hold on to this fortress, our position will always stand!"

After listening to the war mobilization, the brave veterans began to get busy again.

Gradually, the night faded and the morning fog rose.

At first, you can hear the early birds singing in the woods, but as a large flock of crows approaches, the birds fly away.

"They're noisy!" Jedette threw a stone to chase away a few crows perched on the ramparts.

First of all, the heavy iron hooves trampled the earth, and the eardrums of the people roared.

The Knights of the Terror finally stopped and stood in front of the gate, but the footsteps did not stop. Behind them, a large group of infantry continued!

The warriors leaned against the walls and began to hurry up for breakfast.

Since this is the last breakfast, let's eat everything you can and have enough strength to fight when you are full!

A necromancer rode a ghost horse, walked to the front of the pass, and began to shout loudly to the top: "Listen: give up resistance at once, open the gate, roll back to the fence where you are closed, I will spare you from death, or you will never see the rising sun again!"

Jade stood up and poked out of the gate, "It's you, Commander Degar! Are you here for breakfast? I'm sorry, we didn't have food for you!"

"You cunning old man, you have deceived my trust with trickery!" Degar spat out, "Do it, or I will attack the city at once!"

"Your Excellency, we don't like your fences!" shouted Jedt, "if you insist on our reply, then I'll give you this!"

Before he could finish speaking, Jade had already thrown a spear.

Degar, who was closed, did not dodge. The spear whizzed and swished, grazing against the grass a few meters away from him.

"Old, maybe I'm really old!" Jedette sighed inwardly.

"Damn humans!" Degar gave him a disdainful glance before returning to the front of the formation.

The army of the undead has begun to attack, and the sound of swarming footsteps makes people's hearts beat faster!

"Can't they come up with something new?" said Jade on the level dismissively, "always send skeleton warriors, zombies, and ghosts to die first, followed by a horde of corpse witch kings!"

"That's all they can do!" said Jadet's deputy, "It's still the old rule, fight the Corpse Witch King first!"

"The ballistas and trebuchets are under your command, don't let the Corpse Witch King occupy the attack position!"

"Don't worry! They don't have trebuchets or carts, and they won't be able to break through the walls for a while!"

The trebuchets are starting to fire! Unfortunately, no fuel was found, so they had to throw boulders instead of burning amphorae!

But this also caused chaos in the ranks of the Corpse Witch King. The necromancers chanted a spell to drive the Corpse Witch Kings into attack.

When the Corpse Witch Kings start to wave their bone rods in unison, a foul blue smoke immediately envelops the air over the level! One puff can instantly stun a person, and a few more puffs can kill an instant!

The veterans of the battle immediately covered their mouths and noses with moist scarves. Even so, the poisonous fog can make them breathless and dizzy. They had to take down the checkpoints in batches, take a few breaths of fresh air, and then run up the city wall to fight!

When the sun rose, the first attack was finally repulsed!Jedette ripped off his scarf and began to gasp for air.

"Do you need a battle damage report, Your Excellency Commander?" the deputy sat down beside him.

"No need...... Besides, I don't have any soldiers to replenish, so I can only fight to the last man in all positions!"

The deputy nodded, staring blankly at the sky. The sky there was blue, with a few ribbon-like clouds.

"Very good weather......" the deputy muttered.

"yes, nice weather......" Jade seemed to agree.

"They're coming up again!" shouted the lookout sentry.

Jade immediately looked around.

"Damn, they've sent out vampires!" Jade shouted, "Hold the gap, don't let them rush in!" he brandished his sword and led the group towards the gap.

Although vampires can fly, they are not very capable of flying. They can only fly over the treetops, and if they touch the high walls, they will have to sigh! But the walls have been destroyed in a few places, and although they were repaired last night, the vampires can still get over them with the help of the collapsed brick slopes!

The fighters immediately fell into a bitter battle. Fortunately, there were only two gaps, and the vampires could not rush to the city wall in large numbers, but the attack of the Corpse Witch King caused the warriors' strength to quickly exhaust, and everyone had to take turns to rest and take turns!

When the vampires were repulsed, Jade looked up at the sun again. The sun had climbed over the distant summit, but it still felt too slow.

The deputy stood beside him again, and stopped talking.

"If you want to say something, say it......"

"I must tell you, we've lost half of our troops, and all the rest are scarred......"

"Hmm...... Did you see it, the sun is rising again......"

"Yes...... I dare say the sunset today will be very beautiful!"

"Well, we will definitely be able to see the ...... of the sunset today"

Degar didn't expect that such a group of ragged old men, with such a dilapidated fortress, would actually resist his two attacks!

The trebuchet has stopped attacking. Some of them have fallen apart, not to mention that all the stones that can be moved around have been beaten!

The ballista had already shot its last spear! The veterans pushed the ballista down, smashing a few zombies as well.

Bows and arrows had also been fired, and archers and crossbowmen had to join hand-to-hand combat.

It's a clash of flesh and steel, it's a feast of blood!

Jade collapsed in the gap, his hands tightly clutched around his neck. Just now, a damn vampire took a cold bite from his back.

The vampire's fate was, of course, miserable. Jedt is lying on its corpse right now!

Blood gushed out of his carotid artery like a fountain, and his hand couldn't cover it at all.

"Will I bleed to death like a rooster stabbed in the neck, or will I end up a vampire?" said Jedter.

Being able to have a rooster die now seems to be the most extravagant idea!

Is it dusk, and how is the sun gray?

No, it's noon, and the sun is hanging overhead!

Is there anyone else fighting?" Jedette turned his head with difficulty, looking at the gap in the wall beside him.

No, not one! A horde of undead were swarming up and stepping on him, even on his body.

Alas, I only held out for half a day......! Prince Roland, I've done my best!

Please be sure to protect the rest of us, because that's Dia's last bit of hope!
