Chapter 11: Falling

Cheese remembers what it was like when he was first asked to leave the Grey Tower. At that time, he refused to leave the clearly textured masonry walls of the Gray Tower and step into the monotonous and chaotic world that he had only seen in the window. In that world, there are only random accumulation of snowflakes, random frozen ice, no knowledge, no rules, nothing. It was at that time that Ann Lina showed him how water condensed into ice, vaporized into mist, condensed into clouds, and fell into snow and rain. Then, without any hesitation, Cheese stepped out of the rock-made tower, and it was at that time that he understood that there must be order in the seemingly disorderly chaos.

But now, when the wizard, who had completed his trial of adulthood for five full years, returned to the door of the mage tower that had cultivated him, he resisted pushing the door open. Once, he hated stepping out of here, but now, he was reluctant to step here. Now Cheese is beginning to understand that just as chaos brings order, the so-called real world that the casters glimpse is also tinged with disorder. This mixed and entangled feeling had plagued him for many years, and was not limited to the study of magic, but for the most part, Cheese had to choose what he thought was right to act, as he had done with the nezumi problem. But the right ones are often the hardest. This creates another paradox, if the right decision hurts itself, is it really the right decision?

"Don't be in a daze, this door will open sooner or later. And every moment you hesitate here, I have to stay in this cold place for a moment. The crow walking behind the mage interrupted Cheese's hesitation. At his urging, the mage took a deep breath, and finally looked up at the body of the gray tower that seemed to be about to break through the sky, and then pushed open the door in front of him with both hands.

The grey-robed greeting was not a familiar greeting, the blue magical servant affectionately known as Ah Fu had already dissipated with them when their teacher died. A slight loneliness made Cheese walk quickly into the tower. In fact, there is no need to be much warmer outside, only barely to the point where it is slightly cold, so as not to make people feel threatened with death. The crow that walked behind raised his hand slightly, and the door of the Grey Tower closed again.

Such a mage tower full of countless mysteries, its gate is an ordinary wooden door, even if this wooden door is exquisite workmanship, excellent quality, enough to withstand the cold wind blowing for decades, but after all, there is no magic blessing on it, anyone can open or close it, as long as he can walk in front of this door.

But almost as the crow closed the door, a dark shadow roared down from the top of the tower, through the middle of the circular staircase attached to the wall, and slammed into the ground in front of the two of them, making a muffled "poof!" sound. Plasma, mixed with something else, burst out from where the black shadow fell, and if it weren't for the fact that the two of them had all noticed the black shadow before it hit the ground, it would have been a matter of course to be splashed all over. But even if they weren't splashed with blood, the two gray robes were frightened. For no other reason, although the falling black shadow no longer had its original form, the gray robe with a large number of broken marks was still clearly recognizable.

Enemy attack? This was Cheese's first reaction, what was the concept of dying a gray robe in the Ash Tower? The impact of this incident was as terrible as if he suddenly discovered one day that water could not extinguish the fire, but would become an accelerant for the flames. It is true that the Grey robes need to undergo harsh and even cruel training before they reach adulthood, and there are not a few apprentices who cannot survive the training death, and many people have died in this tower. However, when they died, they were only apprentices, and after arriving at Cheese, there were no more apprentices in the Grey Tower, and all those who wore gray robes and emblems were casters with Clark's approval. Such adjectives are not enough to describe their abilities. But such a gray-robed wizard would actually be killed in the gray tower that trained him!

What the hell. Five years ago, Cheese would have shouted this sentence out loud. And now he is more able to adapt to this change, or rather, he has to get used to this change, after all, things have happened, what can he do if he doesn't adapt and accept it? The mage's eyes began to glow with magic for the first time in a long time, and his hands tensed under his robes, ready to deal with the danger that might strike at any time. But the danger did not come. Cheese and Raven remained on guard and paused behind the door of the Mage's Tower for a few moments, but nothing happened again.

The sorcerer walks up to Cheese and gestures to tell him to cover himself. As the one who knows when he dies, there are not many things that the crow fears a lot of the time. But this is the Grey Tower, and whoever throws the grey robe down will not be too good at magic. Even if the Raven could know when he died, he had many things to fear, such as being turned into a frog or suffering injuries that paralyzed his body beyond recovery, which were more terrifying than outright death.

Cheese responded with a clear gesture, the edges of his robes were windless, he had a spell ready to pull the crow back from danger and leave the Grey Tower with him, and if anything unusual, he would unleash the magic that was ready to strike. And the reality disappointed the mage who had not shown his true skills for a long time, and the action of the cursed crow was unusually smooth, except for the need to carefully avoid the blood on the ground, he did not suffer any obstacles. When the sorcerer came to the corpse and carefully began to observe the corpse, the identity of the deceased was finally revealed.

"It's a jeweler. I know his emblem. "The sorcerer was able to identify the deceased by the emblem on the grey robe and the traces of his magic.

This result made Cheese's brow furrow. He still had a bit of luck before, hoping that it was just a false alarm, and the person who died was not a gray robe, but just happened to wear this dress. But since the crow could conclude that the deceased was the jeweler, there seemed to be no other possibility. Of course, if someone carefully forges it, it may not be impossible to hide the identity of the corpse, but what is the point of doing so? It is really an unrealistic idea to kill a gray-robed person in such a fanfare and expect to hide it from the world.

"Do you have gloves or something?" asked Raven to Cheese. The sorcerer himself is not used to carrying this kind of thing, but Cheese has developed the habit of carrying simple dissection tools with him because of the nezumi. The mage didn't ask why, and threw the thin leather gloves on the inside of the robes to the other party. The sorcerer carefully wore gloves, not to show respect for the deceased, but in many cases, the magic with offensive power would not dissipate in a short period of time, and it was very likely that the corpse that had died due to magic would be affected by rash contact with bare limbs.

Cheese watched as the crow carefully rummaged through the pile of corpses for a moment, and when the sorcerer straightened up again, he had something shiny in his hand. It was a broken diamond.
