Chapter 3 The First Task
All right...... Is fighting in a peaceful area so casual?, Griffith sat back in his chair, eating the rest of his food as quickly as he could.
The hostess gave the adventuring party a simple proof, watched them walk out of the tavern, and then turned to look at Griffith, "Are you going to help them?" The Manissa village is in a hurry to ask for help, and they seem to be the only ones receiving the mission. I've heard that goblins are weak, and although I haven't seen them, they should be able to deal with them smoothly. ”
"The strength of an individual does not determine the victory of a battle," Griffith shook his head, "intelligence and organization are." ”
"Oh~" The hostess dragged out her tone and echoed.
Goblins, but rare monsters. Griffith thought as he chewed on the hard bread. There are so many demons and alien creatures on the battlefields of the Eastern Front, but I haven't seen many goblins.
Izmir is located in the heart of the waterway, and the demons in the vicinity have been purged for decades. How did the goblin community infiltrate the core of the human realm?
When Griffith had almost eaten up his food and had planned his plan, several well-dressed gentlemen happened to come down from the second floor of the tavern. The man at the front looked at the hostess, who had risen in a hurry, and then turned his gaze to Griffith.
"You are a knight of the Kingdom Army?"
"Griffith Blanton, Cadet Knight under the command of Earl Lamour, second son of Blanton Frontier Knight, Second Squad Leader," Griffith saluted several gentlemen, and seriously introduced his full set of titles, "I recently served in the Eastern Legion, and I was ordered to go to the royal capital. ”
The gentlemen who came down from the second floor of the tavern looked quite good, and their neat coats were cut quite well. Among them, two middle-aged men followed behind, each wearing a long sword or holding a pen and paper and abacus for calculations.
The head gentleman, wearing a dark blue ribbon, was supposed to be the recipient of a certain medal. His tall figure was slightly blessed, and a look of anxiety and irritability lingered in his eyes.
"Squad Leader II?" a stout man among them looked at him suspiciously. The man who looked like an accountant leaned up and said, "Are the ranks of the Guards and Assault Cavalry units equivalent to the ranks of the Wehrmacht Sergeant?"
"Yes, sir. ”
"Are there any war horses?" asked a gentleman.
"Not now. ”
"Well," the gentleman in the lead nodded in satisfaction, turned around and whispered a few words to the other gentlemen, and then turned back and said, "Apprentice Knight, I am the mayor of Izmir. The village of Manisa, 30 miles from the town, reported that they had been attacked by demons, and we were about to send the town's militia to help. But...... After all, the lads are not military men, and I fear that they will be inexperienced when they first enter the battle, and that they will not arrive until the next day. Apprentice Knight, please go to the village first, and you'll be fine as long as you hold out until tomorrow morning. ”
Griffith seemed to hear the clanging of silver coins, but he still asked with confusion: "Your Excellency, I guess you know, I am not under the command of the local civil administration. And aren't there many young and brave adventurers here?"
Outside the glass window of the tavern, the young swordsman and his companions could be seen walking towards the north gate of the town with simple equipment.
Mayor Mare bit his lip visibly: "That's a goblin, although they haven't been so active for more than ten years, but I've seen their atrocities with my own eyes, how can a child who hasn't grown full hair be their opponent, they ......"
You're reacting violently...... Is there a shadow left by a goblin?" Griffith nodded slightly.
The mayor stopped in the middle of his sentence, and he noticed that the apprentice knight in front of him raised his right hand, rubbing his three fingers slightly. The finger parts of the black iron metal gauntlet hit lightly, making a crisp sound.
Remuneration, local gentlemen, let's talk about remuneration.
Several of the town's gentlemen glanced at each other, and one of them, a gentleman with a thick notebook, walked up and handed the mayor a bulging bag.
"This is a reward for adventurers, and every brave volunteer who is recognized as going to Manisa Village to support will be rewarded with 2 silver langs, and each head can be rewarded with 1 silver lang, and there is an additional reward for bringing back the head of the goblin boss or other demon species," the mayor took out 2 silver coins and handed them over.
Griffith glanced down and shook his head.
"Ten silver lang advance," the apprentice knight didn't answer, and said with a shake of his hand, "Your Excellency doesn't think that five armed villagers can fight against a foot armored cavalry, does you?"
"Why don't you go and grab it?" cried the gentleman with his notebook and money bag, "10 silver coins will keep me alive for a week!"
"After leaving the front, I had no weapons or armor," Griffith said seriously, "and 10 silver coins was not enough for me to buy sufficient equipment, and I had to pay for it myself." Ladies and gentlemen, I will not go if I do not have enough supplies. Gentlemen, don't you think I can't kill 8 goblins when I'm fully armed?"
The town's civil servants finally agreed to a fair price for the apprentice knight. Griffith, who had received the money, did not leave immediately, but went to the weapons shop in the town to buy a simple two-meter short gun, a short-handled axe, and three daggers, and then went to the tavern to buy a package of jerky and black bread. This rudimentary equipment and food cost him a whole gold florin, not only using up the advance payment, but also spending a lot of his own savings.
Now he wears a double armor of chain mail and leather armor, black iron handguards and shin armor on his hands and feet, an iron helmet on his head, and carries with him a long sword, an axe, five daggers, and an inferior short spear.
Without an iron shield, cuirasse, and warhorse, the center of gravity of the short gun is also problematic...... Griffith weighed his state, and he could only use one-third of his usual combat strength.
According to known intelligence, there are two goblins near Manisa Village, one being the Goblin Lair hidden in the mountains and the Goblin Force that is about to attack the village. The goblins have attacked the village several times in recent days and captured some villagers, cattle and sheep.
The militia in the village had noticed more and more goblins gathered in the nearby forest, and some human remains had been found at the edge of the woodland, and had hurried to the town last night to ask for help.
Other than that, the town and the village didn't know anything, not even how many goblins there were, what kind of equipment they had, and what types they were, but they clearly felt the threat that was imminent.
The little information about goblins comes from Mayor Mre. He said that this creature is slightly weaker than a human juvenile, very agile, has good night vision, and can move freely in the dark, but can be severely weakened in daylight.
Griffith's allies include the villagers, adventurers and armed people from the town who rushed to their aid. The town's militia is being mobilized and armed, and it will not be until the next day at the earliest.
The team of 4 adventurers I met earlier was tasked with clearing the goblins, but they probably didn't go to Manisa Village to provide support, and instead raided the lair.
A demon's lair may hide looted belongings faster than killing a goblin. If they are lucky enough to free some of the villagers who are still alive, their families will also pay a fair amount of money.
The benefits of going deep into the lair are much greater than fighting in the Goblin field, but once you are surrounded by demons ten times your size in a narrow and unfamiliar place, isn't it certain death?
Is it because this adventurer team has no concept of goblins, or is the goblin really too weak to do it? 4 people dare to go to the mountains...... Griffith felt that he was completely incapable of understanding the idea of a peaceful world.
But then again, Griffith himself doesn't have any idea of goblins. During his two years of fighting in the East, he faced terrifying mythical creatures, powerful and sluggish mountain monsters, fierce and mighty orcs, cunning and cruel trolls and barbarians, and the weakest of all, the dwarf but bloodthirsty subspecies of orcs, the half-orcs. Small mobs like goblins are rarely seen on the battlefield. There's little room for them to survive.
However, that doesn't mean Griffith will let his guard down. The size or attack power of an individual does not determine the outcome of the battle.
It wasn't yet noon, and Griffith could reach Manisa before sunset if he hurried his way. He could also choose to move with the slow militia, but in that case he would most likely need to spend the night in the wilderness.
Camping at night with an irregular ally with questionable combat effectiveness, and potentially facing an enemy who can fight at night, sounds like a bad option.
After considering the limited information, Griffith immediately set out on the road to Manisa Village.
