Chapter 11: Pride and Prejudice (Part II)
After Gordon and Batman leave the underground of the chapel, they both appear somewhat silent. After all, in the place where they were just now, dozens of lives were buried in just one month.
Gotham is a dark city, but when this darkness is laid out in front of people, only the strong-willed can absorb the impact of this deep darkness.
Both Batman and Gordon have countless emotions surging in their hearts right now. The first case that the newcomer Batman handled, this seemingly boundless evil, unlit darkness was in front of him, and he suddenly realized, as Schiller said, that he might not be fully prepared.
Force is only a means of survival here, but to save the city, force alone is not enough.
With this in mind, Batman turned a corner and saw Schiller standing on the second floor again, holding an umbrella. At the bottom of the balcony is the place where the beggars used to stay.
Batman felt a kind of absurdity again, how could this damned criminal who killed dozens of innocent lives dare to stand here? Why is it that there are people in this world who can be indifferent to the living life? They can even be so cruel that they don't hesitate to kill them.
Batman's depression turned into anger, and he jumped up the street under Gordon's gaze and jumped directly onto the balcony more than two meters high.
"Your judgment is coming, damned murderer." Batman said.
"Did you find the evidence you were looking for?" Schiller asked
"Of course, and the evidence is enough to judge you."
Schiller suddenly laughed, and he said in an extremely brisk tone: "How ridiculous, you are still thinking about judging me, the police department of Gotham City should really award you the medal of the Good Citizen, you are such a great policeman."
"How nice it would be if there were such great policemen who found the evidence left by the murderers and tried them when your parents died? That's what you think, right? ”
"You don't trust the police and the court, but you still look for evidence and try to judge me with the correctness of justice, don't you think you are doing a lot of contradictions?"
"You're going to prove that I'm breaking the law, Batman, and you're acting against the law as well. If I'm going to be judged, so will you. You're using criminal behavior to prove that a criminal is a criminal, aren't you? ”
Schiller raised his voice, and he said in a low voice: "You think you have the ability to take revenge on the criminals by your own means." But in the end, you are still ordinary people who have been domesticated by this orderly society, and you are still talking about evidence and asking for a trial again and again. ”
"If you can't get rid of these, the shackles imposed on you by these orderly societies, and the concepts of laws and judicial procedures that you have in your mind, you will never be able to achieve the justice you want."
"Bruce ......," Schiller said, looking him in the eye:
"The law is not justice, you are."
"Gotham's laws didn't save your parents, just as it didn't save the dozens of missing people, and if you have any meaningless illusions about it, you'll never be the real Batman."
Schiller could clearly see that Batman's arm was shaking, his hand holding the batrang was covered with bruises, and even his whole body was shaking, and it was obvious that he was becoming extremely angry.
Schiller's words were too damning. He exposes one of the biggest contradictions of the young Batman.
Gotham's laws failed to save his parents, but Batman, who kept saying that he wanted revenge, was still kidnapped by the same set of order, and in the end he still followed justice.
"You want me to do my justice?" Batman asked. Then he raised a gun and pointed it at Schiller's forehead.
Batman, of course, has a gun. In Gotham City, you can barely survive without this thermal weapon. Not to mention any justice.
Schiller still seemed calm. He said, "You haven't answered my previous question yet. Did you find the evidence you were looking for? What is that? ”
"There's a stain on the side of the crate under the chapel, and it's dirt and leaves, the leaves of the Korean pine that you only have in Gotham."
Schiller said, "What does that mean?"
"It means that you are the murderer." Batman said.
"Really? I was alone on the streets of Mawson's neighborhood for no reason, dressed and acting suspiciously. And you found a leaf belonging to Gotham University at the scene of the crime, indicating that the murderer may be a person from Gotham University, so I am the murderer, what a rigorous reasoning. Schiller said.
Batman looked at his expressionless of remorse and guilt, his understated tone, his anger had really reached its peak, and the moment he wanted to pull the trigger, Gordon, who ran over, shouted, "Stop! Put the gun down! ”
Batman was interrupted for a moment, and Schiller threw a memory card on the ground between them, saying:
"The evidence is conclusive? The murderer had been to Gotham University, and I was a university teacher, which is really conclusive. ”
"Yes, how you wish that when your parents died, someone would be like you now, who would simply shoot the murderer, because the evidence is conclusive."
"Don't mention my parents......" Batman said in a shaky voice, "you criminal." ”
"You think of a lot of similarities." Schiller said.
"But your anger has overlooked more, more differences."
"For example, I have never had any education background in chemistry and biology, for example, I have participated in the investigation of countless serial homicides, and my anti-investigation awareness will not be so bad that I can't even clean up the footprints, and more importantly, ......"
Schiller looked at the memory card and said, "I have a lot more evidence than you do."
Batman's anger dropped a little because of Gordon's interruption, and when he came to his senses, he felt sweat soak through the shirt on his back even in such a cold and wet weather.
Batman vigilantly picked up the USB drive, he plugged it into the microcomputer on his arm, and a projection popped up.
At this time, Gordon also detoured into the balcony, he saw that in the video, a person in a plaid shirt was sneakily standing on the air conditioner of a house, sticking a hose into the window, and the figures who were standing and sitting in the room fell down one after another, and the person jumped off the air conditioner and walked into the corridor, and after a while, he dragged two large boxes, put them on the trailer, and pushed them away, and the figures in the house were gone.
This is the inspiration that Batman gave Schiller, Jonathan really lacks anti-detection awareness, Schiller is standing in the corridor of the building opposite him, holding a camera to shoot, he didn't even notice.
But also, no one in Gotham City will come out in the middle of the night to hang out, especially in a slum like this, and if you are not careful, you will lose your life.
Gordon suddenly shouted, "No wonder!"
"I remember when I was registering the addresses of the missing people, it was true that the lower floors were the ones who suffered more, and almost all of the victims' houses had ......balconies," Gordon said.
Then he looked at Batman and Schiller, and he said to Batman with some anger: "I really misjudged you, did you just want to shoot?" Did you know that you almost killed someone just now?! ”
Batman silently looked at the projection on his arm, as long as anyone who is not blind, he can see that the size of the murderer in it is 108,000 miles different from Schiller.
Although Schiller doesn't know how to fight and doesn't fit out, he is still very tall, only a little shorter than Batman, and he has lost some weight, but he is close to 1.9 meters, and the person in the video is only 1.7 meters to death, and his weight will not exceed 60 kilograms.
"Professor Jonathan is a good old man, you think so, right? Because he doesn't check his homework, he treats you very well, and he will never hang up on your subjects. But I'm different, I'm a very troublesome professor, always finding fault with homework, taking exams when nothing happens, and threatening all students to fail their courses. ”
"So of course I'm the murderer, and he's not. After all, how could such a cowardly, taciturn, skinny and small person be a serial murderer? ”
"Say no more." Batman said in a trembling voice.
He thought back to the day when he faced the beggar, and out of the corner of his eye, he could still see the stain left by the beggar against the wall, and the strong guilt and shame surrounded him.
And Gordon's words added fuel to the fire, saying, "I don't care where you come from, you make trouble in the city in tights, but you almost killed a good guy." What kind of enmity do you two have? If you have a personal vendetta, then settle it yourself, and don't interfere with the police's handling of the case. ”
"Aren't the police in Gotham City busy enough? Do you want to kill someone in front of me, do you want me to send you to jail right away? Gordon said.
After working overtime for several days, he was already irritable, and he said impatiently: "Tights weirdo, give me that USB drive, I'm going to take it back for the record...... Sir, please come back with me, you seem to know who the murderer is, we need clues......"
After a moment of silence, Batman silently stretched out his arm and handed the USB drive to Gordon.
He found that his ambitious debut journey was completely adding to the chaos, and the criminal Schiller he thought was a great help and provided the most critical evidence.
Schiller didn't say anything more, Batman stood still, and it began to rain incessantly on the street outside.
Just as he was about to leave with Gordon, he heard Batman behind him say, "...... I'm sorry, Professor. ”
Schiller's footsteps paused, and he felt a little incredulous, what Batman had just said???
He just apologized???
Schiller looked back in disbelief, Batman stood in the shadows cast by the building, the only light shining on his visor, and he pursed his lips tightly, Schiller felt ridiculous.
He's Batman.
Because he's Batman.
And Batman is always right.
Batman doesn't apologize to anyone.
In the face of everyone's doubts, he will only say: "Because I am Batman."
Schiller saw too much about the dark side of Batman in Batman's comics, such as preparing kryptonite to defend against Superman, such as preparing a plan for everyone in the Justice League to deal with them, and he didn't seem to trust anyone, not even himself.
It has to be said that these dark sides of the comic editors made him even more charismatic when creating this character. It can also leave a deeper impression on readers.
But it also created a prejudice against Batman from Schiller.
He thinks Batman should be like that, like that in the comics. Batman never apologizes because he doesn't feel at fault, and he thinks those measures to guard against his companions are necessary.
This creates a prejudice against Schiller, and Batman does not apologize, and when he does realize that he is wrong, he still feels regret and guilt.
Schiller really wanted to teach the young Batman some lessons, such as not being prejudiced, not judging people by their appearance, not being carried away by anger, and keeping an independent mind.
But Schiller suddenly realized that he was not really qualified to teach Batman not to be prejudiced, because he had an indelible stereotype about the character, and he hoped that Bruce would become the Batman of the comics in his mind, and that the sooner the better.
But now it seems that the story is not a wise and erudite professor and his young and reckless student, but a very classic "Pride and Prejudice".
Batman, with absolute arrogance in his reasoning, believes that Schiller must be the murderer, and when he has preconceived prejudices, and some evidence that just matches his prejudices, he almost shoots Schiller.
But Schiller also has a prejudice against Batman, believing that he should be the old-fashioned, cautious and suspicious dark hero in the comics.
The two of them don't say that they are fifty steps and laugh at a hundred steps, but they can also be said to be half a catty and eight taels.
Now that Batman seems to have learned this lesson, he clearly realizes that he is not omniscient.
His reasoning can also be prejudiced and produce great fallacies, and his impulses are all the more fatal under this arrogance.
He saw the scar on the side of Schiller's neck, which he had left with the batmang, and at that point, he assumed that Schiller was a criminal and threatened him with the same way he treated the criminal, and although he didn't shoot today, as Gordon said, the wound was so deep that it would have left a scar.
Batman felt guilty and scared about this.
He thought that the fact that the law could not judge every criminal correctly was not a reason for him to judge others arbitrarily with his own arrogance.
And in a situation where he cannot guarantee that he is 100% right, any impulsive act of violence may leave an indelible scar on an innocent person, or even a good person.
He was just rejoicing, but luckily the price paid by innocent people was not their lives.
Batman stands in the shadows and thinks that he wants to put an end to this possibility forever, so he decides that he will never kill anyone in the future, no matter how vicious the criminal he faces.
If any innocent person were to die unjustly at his hands, he would be a more abominable criminal than killing his parents.
Because the criminals who killed his parents, perhaps just for money or revenge, the damage they caused was two lives.
And if Batman kills innocents indiscriminately, then there is no hope for the city anymore.
In the comics, the setting that Batman doesn't kill people seems to have existed from the beginning.
Schiller didn't explore why, and he found it infuriating. For example, in the face of that group of nasty criminals, that group of crazy people who have repeatedly escaped from prison and come out to make trouble, why can't Batman kill them? He had thought about it countless times when he was reading comics.
But what he didn't expect was that in this world, it was because of him, and it was because of Schiller, that the young Batman was firm in his idea that he would not kill criminals.
Because he's Batman, he's the city's only hope, and if he's crushed by the guilt of killing innocent people, the city is completely hopeless.
By chance, although Schiller still failed to allow the young Batman to establish his spiritual pillar, he successfully completed one of Batman's settings, that is, not to kill.
Schiller could not have imagined that he would regret his meddling countless times in the days to come.
When Batman fully matured, Schiller roared in his heart countless times, why can't Batman move his fingers to strangle those damned criminals, so that they don't appear in front of him again and again to break his peaceful life!!
And all of this stems from today's events, and he is to blame.
