Chapter 9: Hope
"Commander, these mutated cultists can't fight back at all, and without artillery support, they will rush up!" Zack's soldiers yelled.
"There is no artillery support, you must resist me, the cultist will rush up and knock him in the head with your gun!"
Zach shot at the cultists with the plasma pistol in his hand as he gave orders to the soldiers.
Ever since Zack found out that the spaceship in the warehouse was missing, he realized that he had no way out, so he could only hold his ground and wait for backup.
It's been four days now. For four days, the cultists launched daily attacks on the harbor. They gave their bodies and minds to the evil gods, and they didn't care how powerful the fire in front of them or how badly their injuries were during the attack.
As long as these cultists can move, they will rush towards Zack's position. This makes Zach have to use a handful of cannonballs every time to strike at these lunatic-like enemies.
Machine gun strafing and artillery bombardment, only when these insane cultists are completely incapacitated will they stop their advance.
But just yesterday, even the last shell was fired, and the artillery had turned into a useless large iron pillar. There was also little ammunition left for the machine guns, and now they had to rely on the stubborn will and lives of the soldiers to defend themselves against the enemy's attack.
The battlefield was filled with gunsmoke, and one soldier after another gave their lives for the emperor, and after paying a huge sacrifice, Zach and the others finally temporarily repelled the cultists once again.
But the soldiers' faces did not leak the joy of victory, and they knew that they had no strength left to resist the next attack of the cultists. When the next attack comes, it will be when they die.
"Ahh
Zack guessed that the demons might have controlled or influenced the spirits of the cultists, otherwise the cultists would not have been able to rush forward without their lives at the beginning of the battle, nor would they have been able to run backwards unguarded when retreating.
In fact, in the battle just now, if those cultists continued to insist on rushing forward a little longer, Zack's soldiers would have collapsed and lost. But at the critical moment, the cultists actually gave up and began to retreat in unison, which made Zack believe that he and the soldiers had been used as playthings by those demons.
Zach sat on the ground disheartened, looked up at the gray sky, and silently reflected on his short life......
The next day, the cultists who were supposed to attack disappeared. This was a bit unexpected for Zach, but it made sense. Zach had some guesses about the demons' thoughts.
Sure enough, for the next few days, just as Zach had thought, there were no more enemies to attack the port. However, the supplies in the port were already running out, there was little ammunition and food left, and there began to be looting and fighting between the residents of the city who took them in.
Most of Zack's soldiers were killed in the battle with the cultists, and the rest of the men were unable to control the entire port's inhabitants. Only a few soldiers can be placed in food storage and important defensive points.
Finally, after a few more days, everyone realized their situation.
Some of the stronger people began to use violence to plunder food from others (sadistic pleasure), the weaker people began to use violence to cause chaos and misfortune (Tzeentch smile), and some people wanted to be refreshed before they died, leaving ethics behind and greedily asking for sensory stimulation (lustful pleasure), and there were too many corpses of cultists and Zack's soldiers near the harbor due to previous battles, and they were not cleaned up due to lack of time and manpower. The corpses gradually decayed and became a breeding ground for bacteria, and the plague appeared among the city's inhabitants (Nurgle nodded).
Distraught by the chaos in the harbor, Zach wants to maintain order but doesn't have the ability to. Some of Zach's soldiers began to abandon their weapons, abandon their positions, or turn their weapons to those they had meant to protect.
"Heh, the demons finally saw what they were looking forward to." Zach said dejectedly.
Being toyed with by the demons from beginning to end makes Zach very sad and blames himself.
"But at least, I can still decide my death." Zach slowly pointed the plasma pistol at his head.
"Bang!"
Marcus rushed out of nowhere and hammered the pistol out of Zack's hand with a single punch. Then loudly questioned Zach:
"What are you doing here!"
"Death... You can't even see that. Can't I decide my own death? Zack's heart was so dead that he couldn't even speak.
Marcus clenched his right fist, knocked Zach to the ground with a hammer, and roared:
"Don't you think your life is precious? Don't you still want to become an Astral Army and fight for the Emperor? Rather than hiding here and quietly ending your life, it is better to pick up a gun and fight those enemies, and then it is more honorable to die. ”
Zach looked at the childhood friend in front of him who had been brought out of his hometown and promoted to be his guard, and the scene of the past appeared in his eyes.
"Marcus, in the future, I will become an Astral Army and fight for the Emperor. When the time comes, I will let you be my guard and keep me safe by my side. My life is precious, you have to protect me. ”
Ah, when were dreams lost?
"You're right, Marcus, you're going to die or die in battle with your enemies." Zach stood up and patted the dust off his body, gradually returning to his usual appearance.
"Go gather all the remaining soldiers and tell them I have something to say."
"Yes, Captain!" Seeing Zach regain his strength, Marcus returned to his position as the regimental commander, saluted, and went to carry out his orders.
It wasn't long before Marcus and his soldiers came to Zack's side.
Looking at the sparse soldiers in front of him, Zach asked Marcus:
"Although we have suffered huge casualties, how can we be so few people, and what about the others?"
"Report to the regimental commander, those soldiers have degenerated, they have raped and plundered among the inhabitants of the port, refusing to obey your orders."
"Damn, if it were in normal times, I would have shot them myself." Zach cursed.
But now that he can't take care of them, Zach looked at the less than a hundred fighters in front of him and began to speak:
"Soldiers, you know our situation now, there may be no support, the food has been eaten, and then we will die no matter what. However, I want to die a glorious death, a great death. Rather than starve to death, die of thirst, I would rather die on the way to battle. I'm going to attack the enemies in the city, and I'm going to take the lead! If you want to come, you can keep up, and if you don't want to live here for two more days. ”
After saying that, he picked up the plasma pistol and walked out. Marcus followed closely behind him without saying a word.
The rest of the soldiers, you look at me, I look at you. One soldier clenched his weapon and quickly followed, the second, the third...
Everyone's eyes rekindled their fighting spirit, and all of them followed their own leaders, and no one fell behind.
As he walked to the front of the position, Zach turned his head to look and was greatly moved to find that the soldiers were following him.
Then he raised his pistol and yelled:
"For the Emperor!!"
Then he rushed into the city.
"For the Emperor!!"
The rest of the soldiers followed in Zack's footsteps, roaring forward.
Although human beings have shown their weakness, madness, selfishness, and meanness to demons in their difficult situations, there are some people who have proved by their actions that human beings are also brave, fearless, strong, and unyielding.
The hymn of humanity is the hymn of courage! The greatness of humanity is the greatness of courage!
Zach and his soldiers are the embodiment of courage at this point, and hope always favors those who have courage.
"Commander, look!"
Marcus, who was following Zack, suddenly pointed excitedly into the air, and a spaceship slowly approached the harbor.
The spaceship flew around the harbor, and carried out a fierce artillery attack on the aliens and heretics around the harbor, and then slowly landed in the harbor.
Thanks to Zach and his troops, the Empire's double-headed eagle banner still hangs above the harbor, and the banner fluttering in the wind makes Sivir and others who came to support realize that there are still loyal soldiers of the Empire here in this demon-infested city.
The Emperor's Son and his Astarte warriors will wipe out the hateful demons and cultists once and for all. Save the people of the Empire from fire and water, and lead the warriors of the Empire to a glorious victory!
