Because of this opinion, it was natural to think of the introduction of new foreign literature. But to do this business, one must be knowledgeable, the second must be comrades, the third must be hardworking, the fourth must be capital, and the fifth must be readers. The fifth is unpredictable, and the first four are almost non-existent in us: so naturally we can only operate on a small basis, let's try, and the result is the translation and printing of the "Collection of Foreign Novels".

The original plan was to raise the capital to print two volumes in a row, and then print the third, fourth, and even X volumes until the capital was repaid. If we continue like this, we can add up to a lot, and we can also briefly introduce the works of famous artists from all over the world. In February 1909, the first volume was printed, and in June, the second volume was printed. The places of consignment are Shanghai and Tokyo.

Half a year passed, and I settled the bill at the nearest Tokyo consignment office. Twenty-one copies of the first volume were sold, and twenty copies of the second volume were sold, and no one ever bought them again.

So why did the first volume sell more copies? Just because there is a very familiar friend, I am afraid that the consignment office will not comply with the price, and I need to ask for extra, so I went to test it once, and sure enough, I was relieved, and the second book was no longer tested - but from this point of view, it shows that those 20 readers are a must-see, and none of them have stopped, and we are very grateful to this day.

As for Shanghai, I still don't know in detail. I heard that only about 20 copies were sold, and no one bought them again. So the third volume had to be stopped, and the finished books were piled up in the room where the Shanghai consignment office was stacked. After four or five years, the consignment office was unfortunately set on fire, and our books and cardboard were reduced to ashes. The fantastic useless labor of our past has been completely wiped out in China.

In recent years, several writers have suddenly mentioned "Collection of Extraterritorial Novels", so people often ask about "Collection of Extraterritorial Novels". For this opportunity, I also found two books that I had left behind from the paper wrappers that had not been opened for a long time.

When I read the translation of this book, not only the sentences are stiff and "sloppy", but there are also extremely bad points, and it is really not worthy of being reprinted. It's just that his essence still has value in the present, and it should have value in the future. Many of them also deserve to be translated into the vernacular, especially to teach him. It's a pity that I don't have this lot of work,—— only the "Chief" article, which was translated in the vernacular and published ,——in "New Youth", so I had to reprint the old translation of Wenyan and stop it for the time being. But on the other hand, the return of this book may not be meaningless.

The original translation was only two volumes, so writers from all over the world were partial and incomplete; Now that the re-establishment is carried out, it is becoming more and more common to have the disadvantage of being unusually heavy and light. After I returned to China, I occasionally translated some sketches for the daily newspapers in the countryside and unpopular magazines, and as long as the draft was nearby, I also added it while I could; There are thirty-seven articles in total, and the short stories I translated in classical Chinese can be said to be all in it. It's just that the three articles of "Four Days" by Kalxun, "Insults" and "Silence" by Antelev were translated by my eldest brother.

In the original translation, a few remote words were used, but now they have been changed, saving the printing bureau from specially casting; As for the incomprehensible premises, they are still briefly explained with a few small notes; A brief biography of the writer is attached at the end of the volume—and if I occasionally have a slight opinion about the translated short stories, I will also say it in the abbreviation.

When "A Collection of Foreign Novels" first came out, people who had seen it often shook their heads and said, "I thought he had just begun, but it was over!" "At that time, there were very few short stories, and readers were used to reading one or two hundred chapters, so short stories were equal to nothing. Now is not the time, don't worry. What I can't forget is that I once saw a magazine that also published an article called "Le Ren Yangke", which was only a few words short of my translation, but with two lines of small words added to it, "Funny novel!" "This made me feel a kind of empty pain to this day. But I don't believe in the psychology of the world, in the world, it will really be so different.

In these more than 30 short stories, most of the things described in China are inevitably very separated; As for the characters in Calxun's works, I am afraid that there are almost none, so it is even more difficult to pay attention to. As human beings, we will never be unable to understand each other; However, the customs and prejudices of the times can blind people's minds, so they often can't see the hearts of others as clearly as a mirror. Fortunately, this is not the time, and this section probably does not need to be worried.
