Chapter Ninety-Eight
The next day, the president did not come to work. The editor-in-chief was particularly tolerant of the president's absence. He kindly told us that the president had obtained his consent before taking a vacation. It stands to reason that the position of the president is higher than that of the editor-in-chief, and he does not need to explain his work arrangements to the editor-in-chief, let alone ask the editor-in-chief for leave. After this incident, the editor-in-chief not only praised the president, but also blindly recognized that he had a deep respect for him. After listening to the editor-in-chief's words, I couldn't help but wonder if the president really didn't understand the world as I had thought he was. What really changed my opinion of him was that he ordered us a sumptuous takeout for days on end to reward us for the hard work of making the sample book. The president's generosity soon spread throughout the publishing house, and colleagues in other departments were all jealous of our proximity to the newsroom, as if they had never made fun of us for being unlucky because the president had chosen the editorial department.
Since the president's afternoon tea is made of milk tea and cakes with a high sugar content, I don't feel hungry at all even when it's time for dinner. In order to burn off the extra calories, I didn't go back to the dormitory immediately after work to rest as usual, but went around to the garden of the complex for an hour's walk.
On Friday, I walked along the main path of the garden as usual, unconsciously immersed in the joy of watching the dogs chase and play on the lawn, unaware that someone was waving to me not far away.
"That person seems to be looking for you......" The owner of one of the dogs kindly reminded.
Hearing this, I quickly stopped. A burly figure chased after me.
"You can't be Yin Ran, right?"
"Salute Uncle?" I never dreamed that I would meet my uncle who was in the vicinity of the dormitory, and I didn't know how to react for a while.
"It's good that I didn't recognize the wrong person, otherwise it would have been embarrassing!" The uncle grinned and scratched his head. "You've become pretty, I almost didn't recognize you, haha......"
"You haven't changed at all...... "Except for a few wrinkles on his face, he is exactly the same as I remember." That's right...... How did you end up here? ”
"I'm here to move for Ah Hang......" The uncle squeezed his shoulder, looking a little tired.
"What? Did he return home? I asked, surprised.
"yes, it's been a while since I've been back, why, hasn't he contacted you?" The uncle asked in the same surprise.
"No......" I looked at him quizzically. Didn't he know about Jing Yehang's severance with me?
"Then why are you here? Surely you have moved to this neighborhood as well? ”
"I've lived here for a long time." I reluctantly admitted.
"Oops, that's great! Since you live so closely, you can take care of each other in the future! The uncle laughed heartily.
"Forget it," I reminded myself...... not to forget that we were already strangers.
Hearing my words, my uncle suddenly became sad. "I also know that Ah Hang has a withdrawn personality and is very unlikable...... But I can't rest assured that he is living alone outside the home......"
"Why didn't he go home and live?" I asked in an indifferent tone.
"It's all my fault...... Actually, I married my daughter-in-law two years ago, and recently my child was born...... Ah Hang said that it was inconvenient to live with us, and he refused to go back...... After returning to China for so long, he has been staying in a hotel, and finally found a place to stay in the past two days...... It's pitiful to watch him toss like this......"
"Congratulations...... "Even after many years, I still miss the moment of peace and warmth that that house brought me.
"Classmate Yin Ran, can you take more care of him for my sake? You know, he doesn't have any friends, and I don't know who else to ask for but you...... Pity my sister who died young, leaving the two of us to depend on each other...... Alas......"
Seeing that my uncle looked like he was about to cry, I couldn't bear it, so I had to go over perfunctorily.
"Let's go, I'll take you to Ah Hang's new home to have a look, and by the way, see if my craftsmanship has regressed. How about I make you your favorite scrambled eggs with tomatoes? The uncle happily proposed.
"You're welcome...... I'll have something to do later......" I think back to the plate of raw tomato scrambled eggs, but I feel a warm heart. In the three years of high school, there were very few people who really cared about me and treated me well, and my uncle was one of them. If it weren't for Jing Yehang's relationship, I would definitely not refuse his kindness.
"Oh...... Okay......" Uncle smiled bitterly.
After saying goodbye to my uncle, I continued to wander aimlessly in the garden until it was dark. Unexpectedly, in front of the dormitory, I met my uncle again.
"Uncle?" "Yin Ran?"
We all exclaimed, "Why are you here?" ”
"I live here......" "Ah Hang lives here......"
At that moment, the door next door opened silently. A man in a sweatshirt and jeans walked out of the house.
President? Could he be my new neighbor? I looked at him in disbelief. You know, most of the dormitories provided by publishers to management are two- or three-bedroom apartments, and I'm pretty sure that the house next door to me only has one bedroom and one bedroom. There's no reason for him to live there......
"Ah Hang, who do you think this is?"
What? Is he a night sailor? I glared angrily at the nonchalant president, like a fish in my throat. It was only when I recalled my meeting with him a few days ago that I realized that he had never mentioned his name or known me...... It seems that he deliberately concealed it......
"Yin Ran......" The president looked at me calmly.
"It turns out that she lives next door to you, what a coincidence! You say, don't you? The uncle danced with joy, completely ignoring the gaze of others.
"yes, what a coincidence...... "The president replied lightly.
Seeing their two uncles and nephews looking at each other and smiling, I couldn't help but wonder if all this was a coincidence......
