Chapter Eighty-Eight: Confused Master
Kano and Fleur packed their bags and set out on a journey to Stirlingshire.
For the sake of "role-playing", the two were supposed to take the train. But now they can't tell the situation of the "client", or the efficiency first.
They traveled to Stirling County via Floo Net, where they searched and asked questions, and made their way to the location marked in the letter as soon as possible.
After a day of looking for people, asking for directions, and even turning into white eagles and flying up to look down, the two finally came to the door of the small manor hidden at the edge of the forest.
"Phew, it's as hard to find this place as it is to solve a puzzle." Fleur sighed, her pretty silver hair seemed to have lost its luster.
"This is the first step, Sherlock Holmes, which is equivalent to the hot-up stage of guessing the identity of the visitor before the story officially begins." Kano reminded with a smile.
"Thanks for the reminder, Mr. Watson."
Fleur snorted, immediately cheered up, and stepped forward to ring the doorbell.
Soon, a middle-aged man dressed as a housekeeper walked out. His temples are a little gray, and his face has slight dark circles, but his hair is meticulously combed, and the clothes on his body are ironed very neatly.
"May I ask why you two are here?" The butler stood behind the iron door and asked respectfully.
"We were Mr. Cromwell's pen pals, and in the exchange we referred to ourselves as Sherlock Holmes and Watson. Mr. Cromwell sent us a letter the other day in which he said something unbelievable. ”
Kano stepped forward and showed the letter Cromwell had sent to the butler.
It's a lie that Kano came up with, and it really doesn't work to intervene with the Confusion Charm.
Who knew that the housekeeper was stunned for a moment, and then showed a look of sudden realization. He quickly opened the iron door and ushered Kano and Fleur in.
"It turns out that the young master's letter that day was sent to the two of you." The housekeeper patted his head, "That day he got up from his illness, wrote a letter quickly, ran out of the manor in the rain and threw it in the mailbox, and when he came back, he was completely ill." ”
Kano and Fleur looked at each other, and Fleur asked, "Is Mr. Cromwell sick?" ”
"Yes, there was an inexplicable wolf howl on the full moon day last month, and then the young master fell ill. He could have been awake for a few hours a day, but after sending the letter in the rain the day before yesterday, he fell into a complete semi-coma, and he was still muttering something about Sherlock Holmes. ”
The housekeeper shook his head helplessly and invited the two into the living room.
"How are the others now?" Kano asked.
"I don't know how long he'll last, he's only twenty years old." The housekeeper said bitterly, "The doctor said that he was scared like this, and there is no cure now. ”
"I can only look at the young master a little bit... I'm ashamed of the trust I placed on his parents. ”
Fleur asks the butler about Cromwell's basic situation, while Kano scans the living room.
The living room is typical of the English aristocracy, with two shotguns hanging horizontally above the fireplace, which looks like it is often used.
The most striking position is a black-and-white family portrait of a couple sitting on a chair smiling, a black-haired little boy sitting on his mother's lap in suspenders, and a young housekeeper smiling and standing diagonally behind the man.
"Are these Mr. Cromwell's parents?" Fleur noticed Kano's gaze and asked the butler about it.
The housekeeper also looked at the family photo and nodded: "That's the lord and the lady, and their family was in a car accident shortly after this photo was taken." ”
"They were out playing, and I stayed at the estate to prepare dinner. As a result, I was later notified that the master and his wife had died, and only the frightened young master survived. ”
The housekeeper seemed to remember something, and quickly stood up: "It's getting dark, and you two haven't eaten yet, right?" I'm going to prepare now. ”
"I'm sorry for you, just feel free. Can we go see Cromwell after the meal? Fleur said politely.
"The doctor said he needed to recuperate, but it should be fine to look at it from a distance." The butler thought for a moment, but nodded in agreement.
Soon, the butler brought a simple dinner, and after the two of them had eaten, they quietly came to the door of Cromwell's bedroom.
The butler opened the door gently, and the carpet absorbed the deliberate footsteps of the trio. As they approached the bed, they saw the pale young man sweating and writhing uncomfortably.
"I've been taking care of the young master for the past few days, and his condition is getting worse and worse."
The butler pulled Cromwell's collar and wiped his face and neck with the towel in his hand, calming him down for a while.
Kano noticed a small red scar on his collarbone, which was supposed to be from the car accident.
"It's okay, after all, he still calls me Sherlock Holmes, and I'll definitely help him." Fleur whispered in response.
When the young man heard Holmes' name, he immediately bounced out of bed.
"Mr. Holmes, help me, help me!" His eyes were half-closed, and he waved his arms wildly.
"Wolves! What a big wolf, so many wolves! Just like that day! ”
Immediately after the shouting, he collapsed on the bed and fell asleep. But this time, he was much calmer.
The housekeeper checked his blood pressure in distress and exited the room with the two of them.
"What do you mean by 'just like that day'?" Kano looked at the butler suspiciously.
The butler paused and brought the two back to the living room.
He took out a copy of Sherlock Holmes from the chest of drawers and handed it to them, encapsulated in a display box.
"At that time, he was only ten years old, and it was when he was interested in these crime-solving stories that his wife began to tell him the story of Sherlock Holmes."
"Halfway through the story, they died in a car accident. Since then, the young master has had mixed feelings for the fictional character of Sherlock Holmes. ”
"He didn't dare to read the book any longer, but he was convinced in his heart that Sherlock Holmes would protect him in times of danger."
"And what's the matter with the wolf?" Fleur thought of another thing he had just said.
"At that time, Madame was talking about the article "The Hound of the Baskerville Manor", and after the car accident, the young master kept saying that he saw a giant wolf during the car accident." The butler shook his head.
"He was a kid at the time, and maybe subconsciously thought of car accidents as the most terrible thing. And what he was most afraid of back then was, of course, the devilish wolf dog in the novel. ”
"And he never finished reading that story, and his fear of wolfdogs has never been lifted." Kano said, and the butler nodded in agreement.
On the surface, it's just a traumatized youth with a torn scar.
But the howl of wolves in the forest and the scientific expedition team with no bones left are real.
"We'd like to check on the strange things that have happened in the forest lately, and they might be bothering for a few days." Kano spoke.
The butler happily agreed: "Hearing that Holmes is coming, the young master's condition seems to have improved. You just want to leave, and I want to keep you for two days. ”
"Ahem, Mr. Butler, I'm Sherlock Holmes, and this is my assistant." Fleur emphasized with some dissatisfaction, and the housekeeper was stunned for a moment and laughed.
"Well, Miss Holmes, I'll leave everything up to you and Mr. Watson."
