On March 14, 1981, Mao Dun, who was ill, sent a letter to the Secretariat of the Writers' Association: "Dear comrades, in order to prosper the creation of novels, I donate my manuscript fee of 250,000 yuan to the Writers' Association as a fund for setting up a prize for literary and artistic novels to reward the best novels every year. I know that I will not be able to afford to be sick, and I sincerely wish that my country's socialist literary cause will prosper! The Mao Dun Literary Award has become the highest award for contemporary Chinese literature, and has been held for eight times since 1981.

The award-winning works reflect the trajectory and achievements of novel writing at different times after 1977, and are the leading works in the voluminous contemporary novel library, which has had a wide and lasting impact on readers.
