Chapter 50 Loyalty is Desired
At the beginning of the Han Dynasty, a series of policies benefiting the people restored some vitality to the war-scarred land.
People's hearts gradually settled down, and while Liu Bang was focusing on production, he began to clean up the dangerous elements that affected stability and unity.
Xiang Yu's late general Zhong Liwu, Ji Bu, Ding Gong and others are still missing, and Tian Heng is still on the run, Tian Heng and Liu Bang have no personal grudges, but he has a wide range of contacts in Qi, and he is a nobleman of Qi State, and his appeal is very great, if it is not controlled, it is always a problem for henchmen.
Liu Bang's keen political talent told him to either get rid of these people or control them. All in all, you can't let them hide from your sight. Jing Ke's good show of assassinating the King of Qin is not far away, if one day they come out and release cold arrows to adjust their lives, Liu Bang's life will not be easy.
In Liu Bang's eyes, Zhong Liwu and others have become terrorists, and what worries Liu Bang the most is that it is easy to use their prestige to deceive some ordinary people who do not know the depths, just because they are impulsive, raise their arms, and gather some outlaws to occupy the mountain as kings, and fight against the court, and the situation will be worse.
Although Liu Bang's days as emperor were not long, he was already an old man in his fifties and sixties, and it was not easy to live to this age at that time, not to mention the emperor with a group of wives, clothes to stretch out, and food to open his mouth. As the founding monarch, he had to make long-term plans for the continuation of the Han Dynasty.
Based on this purpose, he decided to preemptively issue a nationwide wanted warrant and cast a net to wipe out the terrorists.
The first to be discovered was Tian Heng.
After Peng Yue became the queen, Tian Heng took 500 people to hide on the island, and when someone learned about it, he reported to the court non-stop. Liu Bang sent an envoy to the island with a letter of appeasement and asked Tian Heng to enter the Hajj immediately.
This time he was appeased, but Tian Heng refused on the grounds that he was afraid that Li Shang would avenge his brother's death.
The messenger ran back to report to Liu Bang, and after Liu Bang heard it, he called Li Shang to say hello first: Tian Heng is coming, don't be impulsive, you kid! Although Li Shang was a hundred unhappy, he did not dare to disobey Liu Bang's wishes.
In order to prevent Tian Heng from obeying the edict again, Liu Bang asked the envoy to bring a sentence by the way: You come, the king or the marquis, if you don't come, then I have to send troops (Tian Heng comes, the big one is the king, and the small one is Hou Er; If you don't come, you will raise your troops and punish you! )。
Liu Bang's words were polite, and there was murderous aura hidden in the politeness.
Tian Heng felt the chill from the Han envoy's message, and he didn't dare to refuse. If you dare to say a word, the 500 brothers on the island will be thrown into the sea by the Han army to feed the fish. He said to the people: I will go to see the Emperor of Han first, and if I am really entitled, I will summon you again.
Tian Heng took two guests and followed the Han envoy on the journey to meet Liu Bang.
Being able to see the dragon's face and look up to the demeanor of the Son of Heaven is a lifelong wish of many people. But at this moment, Tian Heng was not excited at all, and he fell into depression instead.
Tian Heng looked at the familiar customs and customs at the moment, and this tough guy felt a kind of sadness and emotion that penetrated his heart the moment he stepped on his homeland.
He was full of melancholy in his heart, and the more he went forward, the more depressed he became, thinking that he and Liu Bang were both princes, and as a royal nobleman, he did not make any contributions, but Liu Bang and Buyi were on the throne. If you want me to grovel to meet the cloth and grass people, how can I have the courage to bow my noble head? Liu Bang and I have no friendship, but he is in such a hurry to summon me, just because he is afraid that I will threaten his country, why should I practice myself.
When he was thirty miles away from Luoyang, Tian Heng made the last decision in his life.
At night, he summoned two doormen and said: I think that back then, I was a prince with Liu Bang, but now that the country is ruined, I still have to go to see him, I can't bear such a shame. He Liu Bang doesn't really want me to be an official, he just wants to control me, you give my head to Liu Bang to get rich.
After that, he sighed lightly, drew his sword and killed himself.
The two doormen wept with the corpse, and the Han envoy was shocked when he learned that Tian Heng was dead, and hurriedly asked the doorman to take Tian Heng's head to see Liu Bang. When Liu Bang saw Tian Heng's head, he felt pity in his heart: he didn't expect Tian Heng, a hero, to end his life in such a way. In any case, Tian Heng's death was a good thing for Liu Bang.
Since Brother Tian has done what he should do, leave your future affairs to me Liu Bang! Liu Bang said in tears.
After Liu Bang persuaded Tian Hengmen with kind words, he ordered Tian Heng to be buried with Wang Lihou.
After giving Tian Heng a funeral and crying for his soul, the two doormen did not leave, but dug two small pits next to Tian Heng's tomb, dug them and lay down in the pits, and committed suicide.
Liu Bang saw that Tian Heng's disciples were so loyal, and he was very worried about Tian Heng's old habits on the island, so he sent people to the island to falsely claim that Tian Heng had been sealed, and deceived Tian Heng's 500 disciples to Chang'an, and when these people arrived, they knew the news that Tian Heng was dead. These 500 people did not disperse, but they all ran to Tian Heng's tomb and sang and cried, and the sorrow of the cry moved heaven and earth.
The next scene was enough to make people feel ashamed, and after five hundred guests wept for their master, they committed suicide en masse in front of Tian Heng's tomb.
In Liu Bang's heart, although he felt deep regret and sympathy, he was still a little happy, they solved it by themselves not only saved Liu Bang's strength, but also left a paragraph of article to do, the title of the article is called loyalty, Liu Bang now needs this thing the most, he is not afraid of the courtiers without virtue and talent, afraid of their disloyalty.
So he ordered these people to be honored for their loyalty, and to give them a good burial, so that they could enjoy full mourning.
Next is Ji Bu, Ji Bu was a fierce general under Xiang Yu back then, he had beaten Liu Bang several times, and ran away with his tail between his legs, most of the time, Liu Bang hated Ji Bu so much that he gritted his teeth, and in the wanted warrant, he specially issued a reward for arresting him to show that he was treated differently.
After Xiang Yu's defeat, he fled in all directions, and finally hid in the family surnamed Zhou in Puyang.
The Zhou family had a good relationship with Ji Bu, and when they learned that the imperial court had issued a wanted warrant, the Zhou family asked Ji Bu to disguise himself as a slave.
First of all, let's talk about what does the tongs mean, it was a punishment in the Han Dynasty.
The punishment in the early Han Dynasty was based on the three chapters of the covenant law, and then referred to the Qin law to make nine chapters of the law. The Nine Chapters of Law stipulate the six punishments of the Han Dynasty, which are divided into six punishments from light to severe: redemption, punishment, relocation, imprisonment, corporal punishment, and death penalty.
Atonement, as the name suggests, is the use of money to atone for sins. Punishments, mainly gold fines, seizure and dismissal of officials.
The transfer of sentences includes a part of the prison sentence, seven sentences. The former refers to the assignment of prisoners to work in designated areas for supervision, and the latter refers to a punishment prescribed by Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty for the special assignment of seven groups of people to serve in the border areas.
The prison sentence included a five-year sentence for a male prisoner who shaved his hair and brought weapons to build the city, and a five-year sentence for a female prisoner, as was the camouflage technique used by Ji Bu. After the completion of the city, men who did not add corporal punishment or punishment built the city, and women who were convicted of rice were sentenced to four years in prison. The ghost salary is white, the male prisoner chops wood for the temple, and the female prisoner chooses rice for the temple, and the sentence is three years, to put it bluntly, it is to work for the ghosts and gods. Si Kou, male prisoners go to the border to defend against thieves, and female prisoners serve a sentence of considerable hard labor, which is sentenced to two years. Penalties range from three months to one year for male offenders to guard the border and female offenders to work for the government.
Corporal punishment includes palace punishment, cutting off the right toe, cutting off the left toe, slashing punishment, and slashing punishment.
The death penalty includes abandonment of the city, beheading, five punishments, razing the three tribes, death death, etc., if it is not a serious crime such as rebellion and rebellion, the death penalty can be replaced by money and lighter palace punishment. For example, Mr. Sima Qian changed his application for death to palace punishment, and endured humiliation to write a huge historical record.
Emperor Wen of the Han Dynasty abolished corporal punishment because of a girl's letter, changed it to flogging, and reduced the punishment, and later found that the degree of flogging was no worse than corporal punishment, and the prisoner was either beaten to death or disabled. In order to prevent the killing and mutilation of people, he also stipulated a series of technical standards, such as stipulating the size of the flogging torture equipment, stipulating that people could not be replaced when they could not be executed, and that they should be beaten on the buttocks.
The Han Dynasty pioneered the principle of punishment: the prime minister had to hide the prime minister. That is, it means that a certain range of relatives can cover up each other's criminal acts except for rebellion and rebellion. Specifically, within a family, it is right for the elders to commit crimes and the younger generations to cover up; If the younger generation commits a crime and the elders cover it up, it depends on whether the crime of the younger generation is serious, and the specific situation is decided by the court captain.
The principle of intimacy and concealment was created in the Han Dynasty, and it has been used by successive dynasties for thousands of years, which has indirectly contributed to the strong family concept of the Chinese.
The legal system of the Han Dynasty has been supplemented and increased over time, but in the guiding ideology of the principle of "virtue and punishment", with the efforts of Liu Bang's extremely outstanding descendants, the Han Dynasty changed the Qin Dynasty's custom of retribution and extravagance and lewdness, and became a well-known state of etiquette at home and abroad.
Understanding some of the legal systems of the Han Dynasty helps to understand some historical facts.
Getting back to the point, Ji Bu, who was disguised as a tongs slave, was sent to the Zhu family, a heroic man at that time, the Zhu family, the Zhu family was righteous, and when he saw Ji Bu's extraordinary appearance, he interrogated Ji Bu about his origins, and Ji Bu felt that the Zhu family was a righteous man, so he revealed his identity. The Zhu family has heard of Ji Bu's name for a long time and intends to save him. So, he gave Ji Bu some money, and he pretended to be a businessman and went to Luoyang to move around for Ji Bu.
When the Zhu family was in Luoyang, he learned that Xiahou Ying was more righteous, and he found a way to meet Xiahou Ying, Xiahou Ying also admired the Zhu family. After a period of time, the two had nothing to talk about, and the Zhu family saw that the time was ripe, and said to Xiahou Ying: I actually came to intercede for Ji Bu.
Xiahou Ying smiled, he had already expected that a ranger like the Zhu family would not ascend to the Three Treasures Hall without doing anything?
The Zhu family continued: Ji Bu is a sage, and now that the court is in a hurry, it may force him to Hu and Yueguo. Why should you give the wise men to the enemy? Have you forgotten about Wu Zixu? Teng Gong, you are a hero of the country, and you should give advice to the imperial court.
Xiahou Ying is an understanding person, he knows Ji Bu's wisdom, and he was his master back then, which is understandable. It has always been Xiahou Ying's long-cherished wish to recruit talents for the imperial court, and he is also happy to do personal favors.
Sure enough, under Xiahou Ying's advice, Liu Bang dispelled the idea of killing Ji Bu, issued an edict pardoning Ji Bu, and announced that Ji Bu was summoned to the court.
Ji Bu's official worship Langzhong was grateful to the Zhu family, but the Zhu family never met Ji Bu again in order to avoid getting involved in officialdom battles.
The news of Ji Bu's official became an official reached the ears of his half-brother Ding Gong, and the idea of Ding Gong becoming an official was about to move again, he thought that he had let Liu Bang go back then, and his eldest brother could be crowned official, why couldn't he be. He couldn't hold back the joy in his heart, and dreamed of becoming an official and making a fortune all the way, and rushed to Luoyang non-stop, and said to the guards proudly outside the Luoyang City Gate: Go and report to Your Majesty, just say that I, Duke Ding, want to see you.
Seeing that Ding Gong was so arrogant, the guards thought it was a big shot, and hurriedly reported to the top. Soon, Liu Bang announced that Ding Gong was in attendance, and on the way to the palace, this benevolent brother was still thinking about what official to ask Liu Bang for?
When Liu Bang saw this long-lost benefactor, he looked at his flattering smile, and felt sick in his heart: How can this kind of person be my courtier? His face suddenly darkened, and he ordered someone to tie up Ding Gong. Ding Gong was stunned for a moment: Your Majesty, Your Majesty, why is this?
Immediately afterwards, I only heard Liu Bang shouting: Drag him out and behead him, in order to pay respect!
Ding Gong was stupid, he came back to his senses and scolded loudly: Liu Bang, have you forgotten that I let you go back then? You, you, ungrateful villain!
With a miserable scream outside the palace gate, Ding Gong whimpered for his life. Brother Ding didn't understand why he died inexplicably.
In fact, the reason is very simple, if Liu Bang wants to consolidate his imperial power, he must seize every opportunity to make a fuss, for him, no one will make irresponsible remarks about killing Ji Bu, and it is also natural to do it for Duke Ding, however, he doesn't do that, he wants to raise the value of loyal ministers now, and naturally wants to kill those who sell their lords for glory. In order to cultivate a culture of loyalty, it is necessary to put on a show, and it is also necessary to kill people.
Xiang Yu is a heavy general, and Zhong Liwu is left without a trace.
After Zhong Liyi was in the siege of Xiaxia, he fled to Han Xin's house, Zhong Liwu pinned his last hope on Han Xin, but Han Xin said something to Zhong Liwu in order to prevent Liu Bang's suspicion, Han Xin's words made Zhong Liwu fall into despair, and he committed suicide in despair, and scolded Han Xin before he died: You are not kind, I die today, and you won't live long! (Gong is not an elder.) I die today, and my husband dies with me).
In September of the fifth year of the Han Dynasty, Han Xin still dedicated his head to Liu Bang.
As the saying goes, when a bird dies, its song is also mourning, and when a person is dying, its words are also good. At that time, Han Xin did not care about his old friend's last words, he believed that Liu Bang would not do this, but sadly, Zhong Lifu's prophecy soon came true.
After Liu Bang carefully resolved the remnants of the previous dynasty, he continued to carry forward the spirit of not being afraid of hard work and tossing, and he looked at the heroes and generals who had made great achievements in the establishment of the Han Dynasty, and began to brew a terrifying plan.
