Wang Bi: The revenge of the scholar
Wang Bi had nothing to do at home when he was a child, so he studied. I was ready to study hard and become a big official every day, but I didn't expect to become a nerd when I read. The little genius has poetry and books in his belly, and he is the only one, and he is very rushed. He had several good friends when he was a teenager: Zhong Hui, Xun Rong and Wang Li. In addition to Zhong Hui, Wang Bi fell out with the other two.
At that time, Ding Mi and He Yan competed for power, and as a result, Wang Li was given the position of the Huangmen squire who had originally set Wang Bi, and Wang Bi was asked to do the heavy work and low-grade Shang Shulang. Wang Bi was so angry that he ignored Wang Li for the rest of his life. And the reason why he and Xun Rong fell out is even more bizarre, it is just a debate about "whether the saint is affectionate or ruthless". It can be seen that Wang Bi, as long as he makes him unhappy, no matter who he is, he can tear his face, and he will not be obscure at all. No wonder many people didn't like him at that time, thinking that he was so ambitious, that he couldn't do his job well, and that he was jealous of others.
However, the first years were a good time for philosophical salons to prevail, and people like him who had zero emotional intelligence were also liked.
Wang Bi's first appearance was at Pei Hui's salon, and the question was whether the sage knew the "nothing". This topic is not of much value, but the metaphysicians who advocate Lao Zhuang are just bringing their lives to the Renhou family. Since the Western Han Dynasty, the "exclusive respect for Confucianism" that has lasted for more than 300 years has made Confucius's status as a sage unshakable. Laozi and Zhuangzi, who are revered by metaphysicians, are also very famous, but they can only be regarded as gentlemen, and their status is not as good as Confucius. In order for metaphysicians to engage in the supremacy of "freedom and inaction", they must first co-opt Confucius into people who are compatible with their system. So Pei Hui asked, didn't you metaphysicians say that "nothing" is the origin of the universe? Why does Sage Kong never say nothing, nothing, but Lao Tzu and others like to talk about it?
Wang Bi said that because the saints knew about this matter and understood it thoroughly, nothing was commonplace for them, and there was no need to take it out at all. Lao Tzu, they are swaying with half a bottle of water, and they don't know anything about it, so they always have nothing.
In Wang Bi's words, Confucianism and Taoism became one and the same. The metaphysicians who pursue the realm of nihilistic life and the faction of meritorious deeds who pursue practical results have actually become "comrades". This is also the reason why Wang Bi worked hard to note "Lao Tzu" and "Zhou Yi". These two classics are a basket, everything can be loaded into it, and Wang Bi is the freshest, so it became the first in the Wei and Jin dynasties.
Wang Bi's life story is complex enough and prominent enough. Wang Bi's grandfather is Wang Kai, who is basically a passerby. The most successful deed in his life was to marry a wife who fell from the sky: Liu Biao should have married Wang Cang's daughter. Therefore, Wang Bi's great-grandfather was Liu Biao, the pastor of Jingzhou in the former Three Kingdoms era, and a representative of the Jingzhou school. These people were fond of the study of ancient texts, and they were not as enthusiastic about commenting on characters as the modern texts and scriptures that were popular at the time, but on the contrary, the focus of their study was to dredge up the righteousness contained in the Confucian classics. The Jingzhou School's style of learning has also become a tradition, deeply rooted in the blood of the Wang family. Wang Bi's father is Wang Ye, and he is also a passerby, but he didn't expect a powerful dead father to fly in the air: after Wang Cang died, his two sons participated in the "Wei Sarcasm Case" against Cao Cao. Later, Cao Pi became the emperor and felt a little embarrassed, so he passed on the royal business to Wang Cang. So Wang Bi had a new grandfather. The good thing about this grandfather is that he left him a lot of rare books, many of which are rare books that Cai Yong got in the south - books that others can't see, and Wang Bi's house is full of pits. Who can he look up to?
The fame of the young man turned Wang Bi's already full of pride into the conceit of "Lao Tzu is the best in the world", he believed that he was philosophically lonely and sought defeat, so he was naturally impatient with other people's doubts. His good friend Xun Rong is Xun Yu's nephew and grandson, the noble son of the Yingchuan Xun clan. Xun Rong's life experience and talent are no worse than Wang Bi's, and naturally he is a little unpopular. Public debate was a habit at the time. Therefore, when Wang Bi's "Zhou Yi" "Dayanyi" was published, Xun Rong wrote a paper questioning the "sage's sentient theory" as a congratulatory article. Originally, it was an academic exchange, but unexpectedly, Wang Bi was very angry at first glance, thinking that Xun Rong was smashing the field, so he rolled up his sleeves and wrote an open letter to Xun Rong, saying: "Fu Ming is enough to find the subtlety, but not the nature of nature." The amount of Yanzi, the pre-knowledge of Confucius's father, but the encounter cannot be without joy, and the mourning cannot be without sorrow. And often narrow people, thinking that those who fail to follow reason with reason, now know that nature is irreversible. Although the amount of feet has been set in the mind, but after more than ten years, how much lovesickness? Therefore, it is known that the father of the nun can be no big deal with Yanzi. ”
The gist of it is that insight into things should not make people lose their natural instincts. With a saint like Confucius, seeing that Yan Hui couldn't control his joy, Yan Hui died and looked up to the sky and sighed with grief. Some narrow-minded people think that this is because emotions cannot be controlled by reason. It should be known by now that this is because human nature cannot be changed. A bull like you, although he has cultivated to be very rational, but he can't suppress his lovesickness after ten days and half a month from his sweetheart. It can be seen that Confucius's rich feelings for Yan Hui are not a big mistake.
Wang Bi's open letter not only satirized Xun Rong, but also made people's private affairs public as gossip. Of course, Xun Rong was so angry that he smoked and broke off his friendship.
Heaven created man, and energy is conserved. He opened a door in philosophy, and he must have left only a small window elsewhere, and Wang Bi's political talent is that window. After Wang Bi took office as Shang Shulang, he had an opportunity to meet Cao Shuang to state his governing ideas, but he pulled Cao Shuang to talk about a bunch of philosophical issues. Don't say that Cao Shuang's IQ is relatively ordinary, even if Cao Shuang's thinking ability reaches the level of Wang Bi, it is impossible for Wang Bi to be reused. Political philosophy is a metaphysics offered by politicians, and to really rule a country, the ruler has to ask about the art - don't tell him why, just say how to do it. But here in Wang Bi, this is simply an insult to his outstanding talent and thinking ability.
Sure enough, soon, Shang Shulang Wang Bi didn't come for a reason and went home. In an official-based country, Wang Bi is basically out of action in the second half of his life: no power, no money, and no social status. So such a great genius, in "Three Kingdoms", only Pei Songzhi's footnotes included a biography of Wang Bi with more than 300 words written by He Shao - the historian is quite snobbish, and the pure scholar has little status.
However, the pure scholar has his own way of revenge. Dong Zhongshu, who could only show his face in the "Historical Records" in the "Historical Records", went home after the civil servant failed to pass the examination and came up with the theory of "heaven and man induction", which affected the development of future generations. Until Wang Bi's time, people still habitually associated the interpretation of celestial phenomena with humanity. Dong Zhongshu helped the Han Dynasty to the apex of centralization. Later emperors, whenever they passed by the tomb of Dong Zhongshu by the city wall of Xi'an, had to dismount and pay tribute, so that later generations named this place after the Tomb of Xiama. Dong Zhongshu, who had no money, no power, and no social status, fundamentally solved the big problem of not leaving Chang'an City in the early Han Dynasty for Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty.
If you don't take me to play, I can play it myself, and I must play better than you, this is the scholar's revenge. Later, in the Qing Dynasty, a man named Yan Kejun used Dong Zhongshu's method to ridicule the court that abandoned him: in the thirteenth year of Jiaqing, the imperial court opened the Tang Dynasty Literature Museum and gathered a vote of readers to compile the "All Tang Dynasty", ignoring this talented man who had read poetry and books in his hometown as early as his teens. Yan Kejun didn't go to ask his grandfather to tell his grandmother, he just walked to the office of "All Tang Wen" and sneered twice and walked away. Later, he worked hard in his study for several years, and wrote a set of 746 volumes of "The Three Dynasties of the Qin and Han Dynasties and the Six Dynasties of the Qin and Han Dynasties", which collected more than 3,000 books, and each person who was included had a profile. The editorial department of the imperial court office only compiled one dynasty, and Yan Kejun covered all the previous ones by himself, and expressed his protest with actions: You can't even compare to one of my toes.
And this young man named Wang Bi has completed a problem that has not been solved by several generations. He died at the age of twenty-three, but he left behind a complete commentary on Zhou Yi and Lao Tzu, which directly reversed the course of Chinese politics that followed.
That's right, it's Chinese politics. Historically, Chinese philosophy has not really cared about whether the world is made of atoms or gas, but rather with the fertile ground for the carrots and sticks that nurture the government, providing a theoretical basis for buying people's hearts and minds and smashing and looting. Wang Bi, on the other hand, provides the most flexible theoretical explanation for this kind of political service. After Wang Bi, there was a time when Emperor Wu of Jin divined, counting how many generations of emperors their Sima family could have, and calculated the worst number: one. Sima Yan was so angry and afraid that he almost vomited blood. Le Guang said, Wang Bi once said, first, the beginning of numbers, is the ultimate of all things. Immediately, a big evil hexagram with empty white teeth turned into a big auspicious hexagram.
Wang Bi, a proud young man under Jiuquan, waved a feather fan and smiled slightly, Look, absorb ancient political wisdom and engage in cheating, you have to rely on me.
