Chapter 7: The rain is falling from heaven, and our shelter is poor.

I'm calm.

My friend was calm.

We live in peace.

The water slid down the surface of the large rock we hid inside, dripping onto the ground with a clatter. A refuge.

After drinking a lot of wine and walking a lot, we escaped from the fires in the dry land. Now we leave them behind, and the rain is coming.

- I guess it's a kind of irony.

I don't have particularly strong feelings for rain.

My friend cowered his legs and leaned against the rock wall. She huddled together, staring at the outside world, which was being doowned in soft water.

After much consideration, I realized that they were "legs", not stumps.

What a fool I am. Legs, of course, are the things that are attached to her body. Birds have legs. Frogs have legs. My friend also has legs.

But doesn't that mean she can't be a snake? After all, snakes don't have legs.

So what are you, friend? Again, I don't know.

The rain obscured my sun, and I didn't like that. But the rain also makes the soil fertile. It nourishes the world. It nourishes me.

My roots are buried deep in the sediment under the cantilever, reaching into the soil of the birch forest, absorbing a lot of water.

The sky lit up for a moment, as if the sun was peeking out of the darkness above us. Then there was a roaring pop. Thunder.

Wow.

I watched as the light vanished in an instant. I listened, and the rumbling roar traveled around the world for much longer than that.

What an amazing life.

Sunflowers do not usually encounter storms. After all, we don't have eyes.

- A puzzle.

I turned my head closer to my non-snake friend to get a better view of her face.

How can I see if I don't have eyes?

I do not know. This is not a question for sunflowers to answer.

She turned her head and looked in my direction, without lifting her face, from the nose of the appendages she was wrapping around her.

"Hey......" she said. She turned her head to look out at the rain-washed world. "I'm glad you're here."

- A weirdo.

I lifted myself up.

I think I'm happy too.

I look at the rain. A snail crawls along the damp rock to my left.

Wow.

It's beautiful.

Some cracks. The snail disappeared under the rocks, and I watched my desperate friend eat it.

What an amazing world.

The rain is still falling. We're still in shelter, but there's a problem.

She was quiet and pressed herself against the rock, and I didn't move. Not because I was afraid, but because there was no sunlight to guide me in the right direction.

I think that's unfortunate.

Something was scurrying on top of the rock, sniffing and crawling in the dark. That's our problem. Sounds like a non-bird, right above our heads.

I think it smells your eyes, friend. It's like a bird can smell my seeds.

She quietly looked at me, the expression on her face that made me feel embarrassed. It seems to have something to ask of me.

I understood what she wanted, but honestly, it was a waste of energy for me.

I looked back at the cantilevers above our heads.

Maybe that's what friendship is, yet? Energy is now consumed inefficiently for the sake of long-term gain. Maybe friendship is like using corpses as fertilizer? Thou shalt not eat it now, but in the coming thou shalt eat the plump fruit of the fat tree.

-Very good.

But that's only because we're friends.

Something roared above our heads. A long nose and crooked face poked its head out of the top of our heads, looking at the word woods. The non-bird, the ugly thing, roared at the sight of my indefinable friend, the unrecognizable charm.

I think it really wanted to eat her eyes.

My roots draw moisture from the outcropping rocks and fill themselves until they are about to burst. It's a rather unpleasant feeling.

I'm not a splash.

I'm a sunflower.

The ground around us shook. The rocks above us crackled and cracked, becoming dangerously loose. Many of them fell, and so did the non-birds. It landed on its back and grabbed the large stone that had fallen to its chest.

What a strange creature.

I looked at it. It really reminds me of my friends. But its eyes are ugly. It has a pair of bird eyes. It doesn't have good eyes like hers.

Unfortunately, it has a stone on it.

- My friend did not.

I looked back at the sky and wondered if the sun would ever come back?

I really miss it.

As I gazed melancholy at the gray sky overhead, there was a series of crackling sounds, even in such weather, it was too humid, and then, the non-bird was quiet.

The soil sucked its blood deeply, and I think I also secretly took a small sip naughtily.

After all, what's the point of life if you don't live a little?

It will be our secret.

I am an adventurous sunflower.

Positive.

I'm sure of it.

I sat facing east and expectantly, hoping that there would be a new sun today.

We leave our shelter and roam the rain and the world, looking for what we seek.

I'm not sure what that is. My friends don't like to talk, and so do I.

Not far away, the flames crackled, and she devoured the bounty of the hunt.

- A rabbit. A little rabbit.

As we walked along the field, she saw a rabbit. But fast. Before we could catch it, it ran back into the hole. So, like a fox, she dug into the ground with fanatical enthusiasm. The big rabbit is gone. But in the hole, she finds many small rabbits and cannot escape.

The fire crackled, and she ate it.

Good luck, friend. I think I should have known. It's obvious. You've got legs, you're always so red, you like to hide and run away, and now seeing you hit rabbits in your holes is most obvious to me.

- You are a fox.

Of course.

Forgive me, friend. I didn't know you were a fox. I'm an ignorant sunflower, and so far, I've had a lot of guesses about you.

Oh. Never mind.

Listening to my fox friend finish eating, I stared to the east.

Soon.

Looking forward to the coming moment, I unfurled my leaves, unfurled my petals, and stood proudly.

After all, I want to look decent in the sun.

There's something moving around me. What I'm worried she is missing is a rabbit that will come and nibble on my branches and thick roots. But I knew it was just her.

My fox friend looked up at me, then sat down beside me, also facing east, with his legs on his feet.

The two of us stayed there with the fire crackling next to us, filled with little dry bones. The sun rises in the east, bringing with it a stunning beauty that does not belong to this world or any other world.

Wow.

Red rays of light poured down from the distant horizon, heralding the arrival of a new, sunny, and life-filled day.

I wish we could see a big pile of dirt again, or a strange rock, today? That would be exciting.

Perhaps, if I'm really lucky, we'll be able to see something I've never seen before. But I guess in such situations, I'm always lucky. Every day, I see something new.

What a life.

My fox friend sat comfortably next to me, and the two of us basked in a brand new morning sun, free from any old worries and fears of a new day.

Very good.
