Chapter 23: Life is complicated, but it's also simple

Spiders have eight eyes.

Raiders and Birch turned to look at the strange creature, looking at the spider that followed us.

Birch has two eyes.

It is said that this spider is a very normal spider. It's not very big, about the size of one would expect from a spider. It is not very threatening and always keeps us at arm's length.

However, this spider is unlike all the other spiders we have seen before because it follows us.

Birch turned and walked on, and the sound of flying behind us continued.

- I love spiders.

They eat small insects and small creatures that gnaw on my roots and petals. Spiders are the protectors of flowers.

I don't have eyes.

Curious.

Even though the spider has eight eyes, it sees us clearly.

Even though Birch only had two eyes, she saw it clearly, just like me.

And me?

I, without eyes, saw both of them well. One might ask, what exactly is the role of the eyes in this case?

Can a spider with eight eyes see better than Birch?

She has two children, can she see better than I can?

- A puzzle.

As we walked, I fell into deep thought.

The two of us sat by the fire, made a fire out of wood, and dragged it into the hole from the outside. The spider followed us in, and now, it has made a web of its own, hanging between the rocks.

- It's weird.

Hello, little spider.

Why are you here?

Why are you following us?

I can't say. That's not what Sunflowers know. Judging from the current situation, Birch can't say for sure.

-She had tried to squash it with magic before.

But the spider only flashed by and came back after a while, always running in a flash, some safe distance from her. But not so far as we don't perceive it.

It sat on its web, distraught by the breeze brought by the rising heat of the fire that we spewed out of the cave. Its emerald casing is embellished with traces of rubies, sparkling in the glow of the flames.

Spiders are one of the most fascinating creatures.

Birch is afraid to sleep.

However, I don't quite understand what her dilemma is.

Rest, friend. Spider and I will look after you tonight.

I'm not sure if she heard me, but Birch glanced at me and lay down to rest, but didn't take his eyes off the spider.

As for me, I don't really like to stay in a cave, let alone stay in a cave at night.

- Now, for me, the sun is farther away than ever.

One might ask, what is the purpose of a spider?

I don't have an answer to this question.

But, one might ask, what is Birch's purpose?

I don't have an answer to this question either.

However, if someone asks, what is the purpose of a sunflower?

- It's simple.

My purpose as a sunflower is very simple, to be a sunflower. My purpose is to bask in the sunshine of love, sow my petals, and then, later in life, sow my seed.

That's it.

That's all.

Simple life is so good, isn't it?

Well, the answers to my other questions are also obvious.

The purpose of a spider is to do what a spider should do.

It eats insects.

It nets.

It lays thousands of eggs and then guards its nest until it dies.

Birch's purpose in life is to do what Birch is supposed to do.

She's gone.

She eats.

She has feelings, good and bad.

She has done good and bad things.

- That's all there is to all of us.

I think it's the most beautiful.

The most important question, why we are here, can be answered with the simplest answer in the world.

- Do what we have to do. That's it. Nothing else, this is the greatest gift of life. In fact, we are free because we are too simple to be imprisoned.

I am a philosophical sunflower.

The spider hunter and Birch screamed in surprise as they approached. She runs.

Fat bees buzz and try to escape from the cobwebs.

Its strings are thick and silky, and the handmade strings contain a deep beauty.

Night fell again, and Birch and I sat and watched the bees fight one of the most beautiful battles. It buzzed, writhing, buzzing, pulling in all directions, violently shaking the cobwebs.

However, our spider friends are quiet. It sits on the edge of the net, just jumps a little, and waits. Just as Birch and I waited for the sun to rise, spiders waited for the bees to stop.

The bee does not wait and chooses to continue doing futile actions until it runs out of energy.

After another minute, the chubby golden creature ran out of strength.

- Spiders are moving.

(Birch) use: (small pulse)

A ripple rippled through the air. The web cracked, and the spider was hung on it by a thread. The bee rolls to the ground and slams into the floor with a loud bang.

It buzzed, fought, somehow managed to remove the loose webbing from itself, then flew into the air, and flew away.

- Curious.

I looked at my friend, with eyes I didn't have. I stared into both of her eyes.

Her two eyes were staring at the spider's eight eyes in turn. Spiders are still spiders and don't do anything noteworthy.

- This is the summary of this encounter.

Nothing else happened.

The spider hung there, and Birch and I sat here.

I comfort the spider. Sorry, friend. Birch is aggressive, you know? I think she needs a little more sunshine.

Maybe tomorrow?

Yes.

I straightened up, trusting that tomorrow's sun would bring my friend's face back to life.

Two days passed.

The spider died.

Birch and I stood there, looking back at the spider's body, which was curled up and twitching as it succumbed to hunger. Since that night, it has not successfully hunted again.

- That's life.

We stood there and watched for a while, and the light shone through the spider's eight eyes.

Birch didn't know, but the spider looked at me, and I looked at it.

Don't worry, my spider friend.

I'll take care of the rest.

That's the least I can do, because you saved me from being pollinated by that bee.

Another day passed.

Then, another one.

Then, do it again.

Hello, wo

d-wood。

It's been a long time, hasn't it?

Birch seems happy to see you at first, but her smile seems to have disappeared again.

I don't quite understand her mood swings.

Maybe the sunflower doesn't know at all.

"Please don't use that," said Birch, the first time he had spoken to me in many, many days.

Yes.

Life gave me a gift, but she didn't appreciate it.

- Maybe she just doesn't like spiders?

Well.

This can be a problem.

I was so immersed in my past behavior that I didn't take that into account.

Friend Birch.

You see.

The question is, huh

- Something is moving on my stem.

Oh.

Speaking of timing.

I lifted the leaves and showed a nest of spider eggs, which had been buried there by Mother Spider for safekeeping, and we lost them on the way. She has always followed us to protect her children.

Birch's eyes widened, and I rarely saw this fear in them as thousands of eggs began to hatch. She screamed, threw me off and ran away, shaking herself.

It reminds me of the dance she did when a bee chased her.

Ha ha.

I love it.

I looked down at myself and watched a nest of spider eggs hatch on me.

I felt the most precious gift of my life.

- I felt like 10,000 tiny pinprick legs crawling all over my body, from top to bottom.

Really, I'm lucky.

After all, who else can say that they have experienced the most beautiful event?

- A hundred spiders crawled over my face.

It's the best.

I only wish I had eyes too so I could know what it was like for them to walk over them with their small, sharp, agile feet.

Birch was full of whining and swearing, but I enjoyed myself and the moment in all its simplicity.
