Chapter 24: We sit down and ponder the many mysteries of life
We've been walking for many, many days since the day we were with Big Fish.
And then we walked for many more days.
Today, we don't walk anymore.
- A weirdo.
We sat quietly, in a corner, on a high mountain, nesting on some high rocks. There, we are high above the world, taller than I think of any sunflower, and we rest.
Birch sat cross-legged. I sat a short distance behind her, sticking my roots into the rocky deposits of the mountains.
It's not ideal.
But I'd rather stay in my backpack because I've been around for a long time.
We sat quietly together, enjoying the scenery and enjoying the feeling of being so close to the sun.
I never knew that one person could climb so high in the world.
That's higher than the last time we climbed the tree.
- This is very high.
I don't know what made my friend suddenly silent, he had been traveling and hunting for the past few days, as if he had been enchanted.
Ever since the day he was in the city, Birch had only thought of escaping, of the West, of the dream of heaven, which had been haunting both of us.
But I'm not entirely ungrateful for her change in attitude. Life is indeed an adventure and very exciting. However, perhaps it is too exciting. It's nice to sit back and relax for a while. For sunflowers, this is a more natural thing. Resting and basking in the sun is much more natural than traveling.
One can defy nature for a while, but doing so will eventually catch up with you.
My leaves, stretched out, my head, held high, proudly, stretched as far as they could, to absorb more of the sun's calming radiance. My roots dig holes and greedily drink the rain from the ground.

Yes.
It's refreshing.
A breeze blows through the empty wilderness. From our high mountains, from our high rocks, we see nothing, and from here we look all the way to God.
It's just empty.
But it's not empty.
There are trees there. There are bushes. There are birds, herbivores and reptiles, creepy things. There is grass here, and there are stones. There are clouds of various shapes in the sky, and there are rhythmic movements in the wind.
- It's too much to bear.
There's so much to see in the world.
All trees are different in size, shape, and degree of distortion. All animals are different in their makeup, behavior, and patterns. All the clouds, winds, and air sensations of life are different from the anomalies in which they exist.
Ha ha.
I think I'm very talkative today.
Maybe I'm just excited to take a break?
I'm a sunflower that needs a good rest for the day.
It's a new day.
I've rested.
I think Birch is a strange person.
Her hair grew long.
Maybe it's been long, but I never really noticed because of how messy, knotted, and dirty it was.

She seemed to pull out some branches and debris, and now, by some miracle of nature, it was loosened and fluttered in the wind on the top of the mountain, as enchanting as the churning of leaves in the great forests of the world.
Fascinating.
I turned to the sky and soaked up more sunlight.
Birch seems to have found an unusual calm here, and I don't know why in this high mountain, but I don't mind. My friend sat cross-legged on the rocks, just like the day before, staring at the outside world.
I'm not sure what she's looking at, or what she's looking for on her eagle perch, but it must be very exciting.
The rain is coming, and so is a new day.
Birch is still sitting on the rock.
Is this our most exciting adventure?
I think so.
Why is she sitting on a rock?
What is she looking at?
Was she thinking something?
I never knew Birch could sit quietly for so long.
- It's so charming.
The sun has left us, and warm summer water droplets are falling from the gray sky.
Yes.
I leaned back and found a place to hide in a prominent spot.
However, Birch continues to sit on her rock, captivated by the world and undisturbed by the rain.
Are we going to live here now?
I looked around.
I think it's better than the meadow she found me. The view from there is much better.
If she was with me, as soon as the rain stopped and the sun came out, things wouldn't have been so bad.
I'm worried about Birch's health.

This is the most unusual move of a sunflower.
My roots entered her body and slowly climbed the rocks to get closer to her. She sat where she had been sitting for days.
I haven't seen her eat or drink in a while. This is the most unhealthy.
So, I'm going to share my sugar and rain with you, Birch.
- I hope you can reveal your secret to me. The secrets you have and witness. You are captivated by its elegance, it must be magnificent.
My friend sat quietly, my roots running through her soft flesh, just under her hard toenails.
I'm tired of this place.
How unusual.
I gazed at the world around me, and it was a spectacular spectacle, full of splendor and wonder, both marvelous and terrifying.
- I'm sitting here, on a high rock.
Maybe I'm too greedy? Have I not cherished such a view in my life, and been thankful for the many blessings that life has given me?
But now, I find myself wanting more. I've seen too much. I've seen, felt, and experienced so many strange and unique things, and I'm longing for more of them. I crave these sensations like my body craves sunshine, just like my heart craves sugar and water. I now find that there is no difference between my need for tangible and intangible things.
But Birch still refused to move. She is still sitting on her big rock and still hasn't shared her secret with me.
Enough is enough.

My roots are filled with water, sucking deeply on the rain-nourished soil.

A pulse shot out on the ground around me and shook the many rocks and stones on the top of the mountain, creating a strong tremor that felt stronger than before.
The big rock on which Birch sat swayed.
My friend slid down like a snake and climbed backwards down the tree.
- This is the most ungraceful.
She fell to the ground next to me with a thud, motionless.
But there's something else that can.
Behind her new bark crawled a lump.
My roots ran through her body, slid over her, and I saw what was wrong with my friend.
-A scorpion emerges from her layer and runs away as fast as it can.
Wow.
What a beautiful creature.
I looked back at my friend. Foam and saliva flowed from her mouth and pressed against the stone.
Looks like I'm wrong. What a fool I am.
I mistakenly thought that my friend was resting, thinking about the mysteries of life.
But she appears to have been stung by a scorpion and has been battling the possession and venom of the scorpion for days. It's a good thing that she is resistant to this toxin.
- To some extent.
Ha ha.
Oh, Birch.
What a fool you are.
I really adore you.
I used my roots to push her backpack full of dirt under her head and let her rest there unaffected by the scorpion and its re-injection of venom.
I want to know.
What does it feel like to be stung by a scorpion?
I think I'm actually a little jealous now. Once again, Birch went through something I probably never knew.
No.
No. It's not right for me to be jealous. I should be happy for my friends.
I'm happy for my friend.
I turned my head to look at Birch's face, which was exposed with an unrecognizable, suspiciously lucid expression.
I'm glad you're living your life to the fullest, Birch.
I wanted to swing my roots around her toenails to show my contentment and understanding. But it seems like I'm not realizing something crucial.
-I just filled my roots with water with my powers, and I also filled the roots under her toenails.
They were all deceived.
She didn't wake up, but she seemed to be crying.
What a life she lived.
Imagine being able to feel something even while sleeping.
- Incredible.
I want to be more like my best friend Birch.
