Trick 44 "Strange Tales of the Auto Soldiers"
I have been in the army for five years, worked as an infantry soldier for half a year, and spent half of the year training new drivers and half of the time performing some tasks or training. There is a well-known saying in our troops: the infantry is tight, the artillery is loose, the automobile soldiers are sparse, the dogs scout the birds, the birds, the communications, the food, the drinks, the cooking mothers.
Our army is said to be the most backward unit in the entire PLA sequence at that time, how can it be backward, the brigade where I was an infantry soldier is still a motorized infantry brigade, in the literal sense, when we are marching, the marching vehicle is still a motorcycle. This situation was still the same when I was transferred to the automobile regiment as an ordnance officer, because at that time our weapons were still 81 bars, and the other fraternal units were almost obsolete.
Compared to my peers, I may have gotten my driver's license earlier, got a B2 driver's license at the age of eighteen, and drove all kinds of cars. Like the first Kotou Pingtou Chai, Beijing, Dongfeng, Auman, etc., because my unit is a military vehicle driver, I spend two-thirds of the day with it.
When my coach taught me to drive, I often said that "driving is to hold the life and death plate in your hand and step on the ghost gate", and you should love the car as if it were your girlfriend, because if you don't take care of it, it will lose its temper, and it is likely to die in a car accident. Although the words are exaggerated, from the perspective of a professional driver, it is very correct.
Of course, in addition to learning some normal driving-related knowledge, I also learned a lot of rules and habits from the old squad leaders' years of driving experience. For example, when you are driving, a small animal suddenly runs in front of your car, and you have to throw some coins out immediately. Especially weasels, rabbits, hedgehogs, snakes, and rats, I don't know the specific reasons, according to the words of the old squad leader, it is a disaster warning to break the fortune and eliminate the disaster, and this habit has been with me until now.
I have a personal experience of this myself, but I don't know if the two can be linked. It was indeed the closest I came to death in my life, and the platoon commander and company commander were terrified afterwards, so I lit three cigarettes to show gratitude.
It was a regular night driving training, and I took two recruits to run laps around the training ground in the camp, and I was already a squad leader with two years of experience leading classes. Because we are a car group, we usually have to train regularly, so our training ground is very large, and the outermost circle is more than four kilometers.
This kind of night driving training is a form of teaching and training, so it takes 20 minutes to run a lap, and at 8 o'clock in the evening, the company commander tells the company to collect the car and return to the company after running a lap. I was left behind because I was too serious about teaching, so I drove to the assembly point myself, and the company commander kept urging me on the intercom, and I sped up with one foot on the accelerator.
When I turned a corner, a shadow in front of the car suddenly jumped out, and I braked sharply, and the wheels rubbed a burnt smell on the ground. The yellow shadow stopped at once, and I looked closely, it was a weasel the size of an adult orange cat, and the weasel, seeing that my car had stopped, raised his head and sniffed at us, and then ran quickly to the other side of the road. When I was still three or four hundred meters away from my destination, I suddenly remembered that the weasel had just passed the front of the car and forgot to throw a coin, so I quickly asked the co-pilot's soldier to throw a piece of it out of the window.
Since we had to conduct external training the next day, that is, urban road driving training, we collected the car relatively early, and after gathering, the company commander briefly explained a few precautions, and then dismissed and went back to prepare to turn off the lights and rest.
The next day, we set off after checking the condition of the car, and the training continued until the afternoon, because the return time of the card was off. On the way back, the convoy encountered rush hour after work, and it was a new recruit driving, which directly slowed down the speed of driving.
I was in the middle, one in the driver, one in the co-pilot, and two in the back. In the walkie-talkie, the company commander asked all the vehicles to speed up, and all the cars also increased their speed according to the order, and when the convoy was moving, the first car was raised by five yards, and the cars behind had to be at a higher speed to keep up, so one was faster than the other.
When there were still three or four hundred meters left from the camp, a farm truck full of wheat straw in front of me blocked the road, and I asked the soldier who was driving to observe the situation and overtake, and the soldier turned his turn signal and turned to prepare to overtake as I said, and then I saw a semi-trailer without a car coming at a constant speed.
Because the distance is also far away, there is no reminder, at this time the walkie-talkie in my hand just dropped, I looked down and picked up the walkie-talkie, and when I looked up again, I found that the trailer on the opposite side was speeding towards us, and the soldier who drove the car did not do anything to avoid the merger. I immediately panicked, and in the flash of light, I unconsciously grabbed a steering wheel, and the semi-trailer brushed our car and rushed over.
The moment the two cars intersected, I saw that the rearview mirror of my car was only two fingers away from the rearview mirror of the car, and then the car did not slow down and rushed straight over. Cold sweat came out of my back, and the scolding of the platoon commander of the rear car came from the walkie-talkie, and I was also angry, and angrily asked the soldier who was driving didn't see the car coming, and he was so frightened that he couldn't speak.
After returning to the camp, the platoon commander and the company commander came to ask me if I was dying, and I quickly explained that the recruits had not handled the emergency well, and the matter was over.
After dinner in the evening, the recruit who was driving the car whispered to me that he was stunned for a moment when he saw a big weasel on the side of the road looking at our car, and then he almost had an accident.
As a squad leader, I was of course the first to correct this excuse, but in the evening I still found the platoon commander and told me what had happened, including what happened the night before. We discussed it for a while, and in line with the principle that it is better to believe it than to believe it, and not to guarantee the safety of training, I quietly went to the place where I met the weasel with a soldier that night and briefly bowed down.
At this point, some people may jump out to question it, but at that time, this kind of strange thing happened in our camp from time to time, and everyone tacitly understood it, and it was also to make themselves feel at ease, and there was really no other thing in the future.
An even more bizarre incident occurred during a transport mission, where we received an order from our superiors to pick up a new batch of equipment. The regiment sent a warrior command vehicle and two transport vehicles, led by the commander of the military affairs unit, plus five drivers and five guards, and I happened to be both a driver and an ordnance officer, so I was also selected to the team.
There were five people in the front car, the head of the military affairs unit, a driver and three guards, and in the two transports in the back there were three people each, two drivers and a guard in the main and second car, and I was assigned to the tail car as a co-driver. Our group set off in the morning, and the mission time was three days, two days to receive equipment and one day to receive equipment and rest.
The distance is relatively long, the travel speed is fast, and the route is also planned in advance, but our two transporters do not have mobile phone navigation or anything, so they can only follow the car in front. In this case, the driver is easily fatigued, in our daily training there is a vehicle in the main and co-driver swap positions, the purpose is to wartime when the main driver is sacrificed or injured, do not delay the execution of the task, require the vehicle to maintain a normal speed of driving, the main and co-driver exchange positions. So, in this mission, we also made full use of this skill.
The big car is not as fast as the small car, and the head car has to control the speed, which leads to the overall speed of the team is not fast, until 9 o'clock in the evening, and the destination has not yet arrived. The car in front is also driving faster and faster, and it is estimated that it is also in a hurry, but the result of this is that the car behind cannot keep up, at the beginning, can still maintain communication in the intercom, after an intersection, we are still behind.
In fact, at this time, it is not far from the destination, but because the location of the destination is relatively remote, the kind of small road and big road, no one can find the direction. I looked through the window and saw that there were not a single car in front of or behind, and there were either large woods or farmland on either side of the two-way single lane, and there were no signs to refer to.
"What's the matter, I can't contact the walkie-talkie now."
The guard in our car was a little anxious, holding the walkie-talkie to call, while asking the main driver on the side, we are the longest-serving driver is the main driver, so now he is naturally the backbone of our car.
"Don't be in a hurry, from the position where you just fell behind to the present, it's just this main road, and the car in front is unlikely to take the side road and go forward."
The driver reassured us for a moment, and the guard continued to call into the walkie-talkie, while I carefully observed the road outside. Slowly, I noticed that there was a mist on the road, it was dark again, and the visibility became lower, and the high beams of the big car were lonely on the road, and I didn't pass for half an hour, as if we had suddenly driven to another world.
While I was thinking, the car suddenly swayed from side to side, as if it had suddenly driven onto a potholed stone road, and I quickly rolled down the window and looked down to see that the asphalt road that had just been flat had become a stone road. At this time, the main driver also slowed down, and I turned to him and asked.
"Is it the wrong way? If you don't have a store in front of the village or behind it, you will be in trouble if you go the wrong way. “
"If it's still the same way, turn around and go back."
The main driver carefully put the steering wheel and answered me without raising his head, and the guard also raised his head and looked around, and suddenly said something.
"I don't have a car in front of or behind ~ I don't even have a street lamp!"
I also noticed this situation, so I quickly looked around and found that this was the case. Although the car was slowing down, it kept moving forward, and the cab was quiet, and the three of us were watching the road outside. Suddenly, a street sign on the side of the road caught my eye, and I pointed to the street sign and said to the driver.
"There's a sign ahead, let's stop and see where we are."
The car quickly stopped in front of the street sign, and I could see the words on the road sign through the car window, and the two big characters of Yincun painted with red paint appeared in front of us, which was particularly eye-catching against the background of the surrounding night. I was just about to get out of the car and look around to see if there were any residents who could ask for directions, but the old squad leader of the main driver stopped me.
"Don't go down yet, I feel a little weird, I don't see anyone in this radius for a few miles, so I can't go forward and take a look."
The three of us parked in the car for five minutes, and there were still no cars or people in front of us, so we continued to drive forward, and after a while, the road in front seemed to have no heads, and the fog around us was getting thicker and thicker, and the guard looked at the surrounding environment and said a little hesitantly.
"No, turn around, I don't think it's the right way."
The two of us didn't object, and immediately turned around and drove the road when we were going to go, because the road had already been walked through, so the speed was also very fast, and after a while, we passed the street sign that said Yin Village just now. The car was jolting forward on the road, and I looked at the sign through the rearview mirror, and it became more and more weird. The fog did not dissipate, and the illumination range of the headlights was getting smaller and smaller, and the three of us were not talking, just quietly looking ahead, and at this time, a street sign appeared faintly not far in front, and my heart was relieved, and I felt that I had finally found the way.
But when I passed by the sign, I suddenly felt in a trance, because two familiar words appeared on the sign, Yin Village. I raised my hand and pointed to the sign, a little nervous.
"Damn~ Didn't you pass by this place just now?"
They also followed the direction of my finger, and they also saw the street sign, and they didn't know what was going on for a while. The old squad leader didn't reply, gave a foot on the accelerator, and the speed of the car immediately increased, and I looked at the guard, and my face was full of surprise. The car drove fast for a while, and it was logical that we must have reached the intersection in front of us, but the road in front was still foggy, as if we couldn't see the end, and at this moment, a street sign in front of us attracted our attention again, and a bad premonition rose in my heart.
Sure enough, it was still the same sign, and the guard was nervous and anxious, and opened his mouth to scold.
"~ what's the situation, this is, this ghost hit the wall~"
As soon as his words came out, my heart was also tight, and it didn't make sense if it wasn't a ghost hitting the wall. The old squad leader still didn't speak, gave another foot on the accelerator, and the car quickly passed by the street sign again, driving forward desperately. As expected, after driving for a while, the street sign appeared in front of him again, and the old squad leader couldn't hold his breath, stopped in front of the street sign with a foot of brake, and said angrily.
"Fuck~ I don't believe in evil, I'll go down and see what the hell is going on."
After the car stopped, the old squad leader opened the door and jumped in, and I motioned for the guard to stay in the car, and also opened the door and jumped in. The two of us circled around the street sign, except for the two big red paint characters, nothing else was found, the old squad leader handed me a cigarette, lit one himself, and said helplessly.
"It's really that I didn't look at the yellow calendar when I went out, and I encountered this kind of, anyone would dare to do it!"
I smoked two puffs of cigarettes, and I smiled helplessly, to be honest, after joining the army, I walked a lot at night, and this kind of thing will not affect us too much. Taking advantage of the time to get out of the car, I moved my body, and the afterglow of my eyes suddenly glanced at the road in front of the car in front of me, as if there was a figure slowly walking towards us, I turned my head and pointed to the front, and said to the old squad leader next to me.
"Squad leader, there seems to be a person in front."
The old squad leader looked at the road in front of the car, and also found the figure, we looked at each other tacitly, the old squad leader walked up to the man, I patted the car door, reminded the guards to pay attention, and followed the old squad leader behind.
After walking about thirty or forty meters, we saw the person on the other side, it was an old man in an old-fashioned military uniform, and when he saw us coming, the old man stopped and looked at us. The old squad leader stepped forward quickly, first saluted a military salute, and then opened his mouth to speak.
"Fellow, please ask what kind of place this is, we got lost on a mission."
As soon as the words fell, the two of us also came to the old man's approach, and at this time, I also saw the old man's appearance, almost seventy years old, dressed in an old-fashioned military uniform very neat and clean, the old man looked very energetic, and his eyebrows revealed a sense of perseverance and ability. When he saw us in military uniforms, he was surprised at first, and then asked strangely.
"How did you get here?"
"The time was too rushed, and we were not familiar with the road conditions, so we fell behind and walked here."
The old squad leader quickly explained, and the old man nodded slightly, then glanced back at the road behind him, and then turned his head to talk to the two of us.
"Hmm~ You go further, there is a kilometer to see the intersection and turn right to the main road."
We thanked each other repeatedly, and the old squad leader followed and handed the old man a cigarette, and the old man took the cigarette and said to the two of us.
"It's getting late, so let's go quickly, don't delay your business."
The two of us saluted and thanked the old man again, and without being verbose, we turned around and walked to the car, got in the car and drove forward. Through the rearview mirror, I saw the old man standing still and watching us quietly, gradually disappearing into the fog. After driving for a kilometer, we did come to an intersection, and we turned right at the old man's words and drove for a while, and saw the convoy parked on the side of the road waiting for us.
After the commander of the military affairs unit who led the team saw us returning to the team, he explained a few more words, hurriedly got into the car and continued to hurry, and the rest of the road went smoothly. We arrived at our destination, rested for the night, received new equipment, rested for another night, and returned to the camp early the morning of the third day, and on the way back there was no incident. On the night of the break, the old squad leader reported our experience to the head of the military affairs unit, although there were many problems that could not be explained, but there were no other problems, so I didn't care.
I have been a car soldier for more than four years, although there are many ups and downs, but they are all safe, and it can be regarded as a valuable experience in my life.
Wearing military uniforms to protect the family and defend the country, from ancient times to the present, no matter when and where, the righteousness of the soldiers will always exist!
