Chapter 803: Du Wei Says Traces (1)

Walking by the Luxi River, Du Wei suddenly seemed to remember something, raised his hands, touched his head, and then said seriously: "During my time in Xinzhou, I heard the legend of the six ancestors Hui Neng Xian Zen traces!" ”

Zhang Cambodia looked at Du Wei with interest, "Oh, there is also the legend of the six ancestors Hui Neng Zen traces?" Tell me about it! ”

Du Fu also urged on the side: "Tell me quickly." ”

"Good!" Du Wei cleared his throat, crossed his hands on his waist, looked at the Longshan Guoen Temple in the distance, opened his mouth, and poured out the legends and storylines he heard about the traces of the Six Ancestors Hui Neng Xian Zen from the chatterbox, just like the flowing water of the Luxi River, telling the story-

It is said that the five ancestors of Dongchan Temple in Hubei Province have a good eye for talent, and after several investigations, they taught the true method of Zen Lin to Huineng overnight, and advised: "If you live here, someone harms you, and you must go quickly." ”

When parting, he also sent a deep witty verse to Huineng: "When you are in the arms, you will stop, and when you meet, you will hide." ”

Huineng followed the instructions to "send to the south", took the ancestral robe and gold bowl, went through a thousand hardships, crossed the Great Yuling, passed through Meiguan, and came to Caoxi Baolin Temple to live temporarily, but was chased and killed by Shenxiu's men. In the raging fire, Huineng survived death because he hid in the cracks of the large rocks behind the temple.

Huineng judged the situation and knew that he could no longer settle down in Cao Xi. In order not to affect other monks, in order to develop and promote the Zen teachings of the ancestors, Huineng left Caoxi alone, walked through dense forests, crossed valleys, trekked through mountains and rivers, and continued to run south. These experiences are clearly recorded in the "Altar Sutra" and various classics. But in the next fifteen years, Huineng's trace was like a mud cow entering the sea, and when he re-emerged from the mountain, it was like a hidden dragon out of the abyss, and a strange man fell from the sky. His enlightenment has reached the peak of the Zen world, and Huineng has become a generation of grandmasters who carry forward the great cause of Zen Buddhism.

Where did Huineng go in those fifteen years? There have been many controversies in the Buddhist academic circles from ancient times to the present, but as the years passed, the fog gradually dissipated, the mystery was gradually solved, and the answer surfaced: he hid in Huaiji and Sihui, which were under the jurisdiction of Zhaoqing, and practiced in seclusion.

Since Huineng escaped the catastrophe and left Baolin Temple to run south, he didn't know how many days he had walked and came to the foot of the Dengzhan Ridge at the junction of Sihui and Qingyuan, at the foot of a village called "Shanglinpu" at the foot of the camp in Longfu Town.

Huineng was a sincere and friendly person, often working for the villagers, and the local people not only did not resist this outsider, but got along with him very well, often sending him some grains and sweet potatoes and other things.

With the help of the villagers, Huineng built a small mud house (later generations called it "Liuzu Nunnery") in a flat place halfway up the mountainside with fir tiles. Surrounded by a few stout green trees, this small mud house is both shady and secluded.

Huineng often traveled to Qingtang, Longtou, Taotang, Luohu and other places, on the one hand, to understand the people's feelings, and on the other hand, to promote the Zen of the Dun School. After some time, Huineng took a small raft tied with bamboo and went up the river.

One day, Huineng came to a small county town, and when he saw that it was dusk, the birds returned to their nests, so they left their rafts, landed on the south side of the river, and came to a hut. This is next to the pond cover in Huaiji County.

The farmer, who was repairing the shovel in front of the door, saw a stranger coming, asked the reason, and learned that Huineng wanted to stay here, so he welcomed him warmly into the hut, and said, "You must be very thirsty because you are sweating profusely and your lips are chapped." Come, drink a bowl of water. With that, he picked up a big bowl and scooped a bowl of water into the water tank and handed it to Huineng.

Huineng, who had been tired all day, took the big bowl, took a sip, and felt that the water was extremely sweet, like drinking nectar elixir, so he raised his head and drank the bowl of water, and asked, "Where is this water?" ”

The farmer pointed to the rushing river outside: "This is the water in the Nanxi River." ”

"Ah, it's like holy water." Huineng remembered the miraculous legend about Cao Xishui that he heard in the Buddhism that day: in the first year of Emperor Wu of Liang's Tianjian (502 years), there was a high monk from Tianzhu who passed through Caoxikou on the way to the north, and felt that this was as sweet as nectar when he drank the water. That is, go up the stream, go to the Baolin Temple to see the mountains and rivers surrounding, the peaks and peaks are wonderful, and sigh: "It's like the Shamen Monastery." He also predicted that a hundred years after the temple was built, there would be a bodhisattva in the flesh to open a feast here.

Drinking the "holy water that purifies the heart and moistens the lungs," a strange feeling stirred Huineng's heart. This Nanxi water is as clear and sweet as Cao Xishui. A hazy feeling gripped him.

After talking carefully, Huineng Fang knew that the farmer was guarding the water by the pond cover, and every morning before dawn he had to climb to the back mountain to divert water to irrigate the farmland. If there is a severe drought, the fields south of the Huaicheng River will crack, and the rice harvest will fail. Here, it has not rained for more than a month, and there is not much water in the pond in the back mountain, and now the land in the fields has begun to dry up.

The farmer said with a sad face, "It seems that the people in this neighborhood will be starving this year." ”

Huineng asked, "There is not much water in the back mountain, can't you find a water source near Tiandong?" ”

The farmer sighed, "It would be best if we could find a source of water in the cave, but I think it's just a vain idea." ”

After hearing this, Huineng's brows furrowed and he fell into deep thought.

Huineng stayed in the small hall of the old farmer's house that night, and heard the long sighs of the farmer who had not slept well all night.

The next day, Huineng followed the farmer to the field and saw that the leaves of the seedlings were beginning to burn yellow. Climb to the back mountain to draw water, and see that the mountain pond is almost bottoming out.

After living with the old farmer for nearly a month, one night the farmer sat in front of the hut, looking up at the starry sky in a daze, sighing from time to time.

Huineng patted him on the shoulder with his hand and said, "Don't worry about the lack of water for irrigation. I think you'll find water in the cave. ”

Farmer: "Don't comfort me anymore. ”

Huineng: "I'm not trying to comfort you. Recently, I have made some new discoveries. ”

Old farmer: "What new have you discovered?" ”

Huineng Zhengse said: "On the first and fifteenth days of the new year, there are light spots flashing in the southwest and northeast of the field. I once went to the field to pay close attention to the grass, and the grass in that place was very green, and I took the soil under the grass and looked at it carefully, and I found it very wet. When I was in my hometown, I used to dig wells with the older generation and listened to them tell me about the signs of finding water. It seems that if you dig down in that place, a spring will gush out. ”

When the farmer heard this, he was overjoyed: "If it is really as you say, I can avoid the pain of drawing water after climbing the mountain." Today happens to be the first day of the new year, and I invite you to go outside and see if it is really what you said. ”

"Okay." Huineng promised.

So, Huineng and the farmer came to the field, looked in the southwest direction, and sure enough, they saw a shimmering white light, and then turned their heads to the northeast to observe, and they also saw a flickering white light.

The farmer was still a little puzzled: "If you dig in that place, you will really see the water source?" ”

Huineng said confidently: "In my opinion, I am sure. ”

The farmer said, "Well, I'll decide on that location tonight, and I'll go to that place tomorrow and give it a try." ”

The next day, the farmer and Huineng came to a fixed location southwest of the field with shovels.

Huineng started first, picked up the shovel and dug down, and after only digging two shovels, he saw that the soil under the grass was obviously much wetter. The farmer took the shovel and dug harder, and the more he dug down, the wetter the soil became. When it was dug to a depth of one zhang, a clear spring gushed out.

The farmer was dumbfounded at first, then slapped his hand on the melon in the head, and cried out in ecstasy: "This time I have found a treasure!" Dig up the treasure! Then he threw the shovel into the field, pulled his legs and ran, and went back to the village to tell him.

When the villagers heard the good news, they came with farm tools one after another. Some are digging wells in the northeast, while others are digging canals to divert water to irrigate the fields.

Seeing that the parched fields were filled with water, the villagers gathered around Huineng and gave him a thumbs up, praising him for doing a great deed for the people.

Since then, the pond cover has become a fertile land for drought and flood protection.

The two wells next to the canopy are called the "Six Ancestral Wells", and those wells have been preserved to this day.

Later generations also built the "Six Ancestors Nunnery" at the site of the farmer's thatched hut where Huineng stayed next to the hall to commemorate it.

After staying at the farmer's house for a few months, Hui Neng felt that there were too many people coming and going in this county, and he carried the robes and gold bowls handed down by the five ancestors Hongren, if he stayed here for a long time, it was easy to expose his identity and cause trouble, so he said goodbye to the farmer, went up the river along the South River, and went to the Sanjiang Ferry under the Huaiji High Ridge, and went to the northwest after the transition, and when he stepped on the land of Jiaoping and Shilong, he was at a loss, and he didn't know where to go, and suddenly saw a red and yellow intersecting halo on the small hill in the northwest corner of the hill in the swirling, In the swirling.

"Are you showing me the way?" Huineng was covered in heat, and involuntarily walked towards the flickering place of the aura, and went up a small hill, and suddenly saw a winding ancient road extending westward, submerging into the dense woods.

Huineng traveled west along the ancient road in the mountains half-covered by basil, and I don't know how long I walked, and it rained heavily. Huineng saw that there was a big mountain in the wilderness, with strange rocks and ancient trees, so he climbed the mountain along the mountain road full of thorns, braving the torrential rain, and struggled to climb the peak, and suddenly felt that his eyes were bright: there was a stone chamber on the side of the road ten zhang away from him. Huineng hurriedly rushed over with his bags on his back.

This stone chamber is made up of three large pieces of naturally occurring granite stacked on top of each other, and one boulder on top is supported by two boulders below, forming a large eaves more than a zhang wide. The stone chamber is about two zhang high and three zhang wide, and what surprised him was that there were stone tables, stone benches, and stone incense burners in the stone room, and there was a flat and wide stone on the inner wall, like a stone bed. The stalactites in the rock have a steady stream of clear dripping water. Huineng stepped forward to take the drop of water and tasted it carefully, it was as sweet as nectar. If you look closely, you can see that grains of grain fall down from time to time in the stone slabs on the cave wall. Apparently, it was a rat dragging the grain from the field into a hole for collection.

Huineng's heartstrings seem to have been plucked by something, in the past, in Caoxi Baolin Temple, he was chased and killed by monks from the north, set fire to the mountain, and he was fortunate to escape the catastrophe of his life by relying on the boulder behind the temple. Now after a lot of hardships, there is a huge stone in front of you, it seems that you are related to the stone in this life, and this place can be regarded as a "Buddha land cave"! In the midst of tribulation, he seems to be protected by the Buddha and the gods.

Huineng took off her wet clothes, wrung out the water, and set it aside. After looking around,

Huineng hid the robes and bowls in the cracks in the cave, and then blocked the gaps with stones so that they did not leave any traces.

After being chased and killed, constantly tossing and turning, and after a long journey, Huineng was so tired that he lay on the stone bed, stretching his limbs, thinking about the teachings of the five ancestors to him, and recalling the series of encounters after escaping into the empty door......

Outside the stone room, thunder and lightning were blowing, and the rain was pouring non-stop. Huineng unconsciously closed her eyes and fell asleep.

In the haze, Huineng seemed to hear something, he opened his eyes suddenly, heh, it was dawn.

The clouds and rain are over, and the mountains and fields are washed by the rain overnight, making them bright and green, and the air is exceptionally fresh.

Overlooking the mountain, there are two small rivers like jade belts, meandering, winding in the hills and ravines.

By the river, there are more than a dozen cottages connected to the village, hidden in the dense phoenix tail bamboo forest.

The sound of "click" was getting closer, Huineng walked out of the stone room, looked to the right, and saw a woodcutter forty miles away on the mountain road, holding a machete, carrying bamboo poles and strips, stepping on the fallen leaves all over the ground, and coming up the mountain. After the rain, the mud and decaying leaves on the road are particularly loud when people step on them.

When the woodcutter suddenly saw a man with a publisher coming out of the stone room, his heart shrank, and he couldn't help but clench the woodcutter in his hand, and with a little vigilance, he asked, "How did you come to this turtle's beak rock room early in the morning?"

Huineng stepped forward and gave a salute: "Last night, I passed by this mountain range, and I encountered wind and rain, so I had to take shelter from the rain here. ”

When the woodcutter saw that he was kind and kind, and that he was polite in his speech and manners, unlike a fierce and treacherous villain, he relaxed his heart and took a step forward: "Where did you come from and where are you going?"

"This ......" Huineng knew that it was not appropriate to disclose his life experience to the public at this time, and replied, "My surname is Lu, my name is Neng, and I seem to be floating wild geese, and the four seas are my home." ”

"Ah, it turned out to be a casual walker."

Huineng: "Excuse me, what kind of place is this?"

The woodcutter pointed to the mountains: "This mountain is called Shangai Ridge, this cave is called Guizui Rock, and the river under the mountain is called Lengkeng River. Water River. ”

"What kind of territory is this?"

"Huaiji."

"Huaiji?" Huineng's heartstrings were violently touched, and he couldn't help muttering, "Huaiji, Huaiji......"

When the woodcutter saw that he seemed to have something on his mind, he asked strangely, "Huaiji, Huaiji, what are you talking about?"

It turned out that Huineng suddenly remembered the words that the five ancestors gave him when they parted: "When you are in the arms, you will stop, and when you meet, you will hide." Now, when I came to "Huaiji", didn't I respond to the words of the five ancestors? As far as Huineng can see, there are mountains and mountains, pine trees rising from the ground, dense and verdant, it is indeed a hiding place, and the villages are dotted in the distance.

He thought in his heart, "Master, I will follow your instructions and settle down here for the time being." ”

Huineng turned to the woodcutter and asked, "What do the mountain people here do for a living?"

The woodcutter replied, "Cultivate the mountains for hunting, plough the fields and plant grain." What is this for, you ask?"

"I feel like duckweed without roots, wandering for a long time, feeling physically and mentally exhausted, and I want to live here."

"This ...... In this way, my brother died of an unfortunate illness a long time ago, leaving a thatched hut, if you don't dislike it, please come to our village to live" This woodcutter is a warm-hearted man.

And Huineng had his own opinion, so he excused himself and said: "I understand your kindness." I never wanted to cause trouble for others, though. What do you think of the stone chamber at Turtle Beak Rock?"

"This stone chamber sits north to south, there is no heat in summer, no cold in winter, it is a good place. However, you are here alone, and it is too quiet. ”

"I'm a person who just likes to be quiet."

As he spoke, the woodcutter sneezed several times.

When Huineng was chopping wood to recuperate from his injuries in Xinzhou, he had learned medical skills from the people in the village, so he knew a thing or two about curing some common diseases, and asked with concern: "Ah, are you suffering from a cold?" ”

The woodcutter replied, "A few days ago I went up the mountain to cut wood, and it rained heavily, and I dragged my wet body back home, and my whole body was hot that night. But the mountain trail is rugged and difficult to travel, and it is too far to go to the polder city to seek medical treatment. ”

Huineng: "You can't put it off again and again. ”

The woodcutter looked helpless: "Then what can be done?" ”

Huineng said: "The mountains here are full of treasures. ”

The woodcutter was puzzled: "Treasure? The mountains are full of grass, where is there any treasure? ”

"You treasure, no grass," Huineng pointed to some weeds on the side of the road, "you pick those herbs and go home to fry them, and then cover them with a heavy quilt and press them, and your illness will soon be cured." ”

Now, the half-believing woodcutter had no choice but to follow Huineng to pick mountain herbs and go home with an attitude of trying.

The next day, the woodcutter happily came to tell Huineng that his wind chill had really been cured.

The woodcutter's name was Tan Sheng, and in order to thank Huineng, he specially invited him to his home.

At the beginning of the meal, Tan Sheng's wife brought out steaming soup and vegetables, and a rich aroma came to her nose.

Huineng asked, "What kind of soup is this, what kind of dish?"

Tan Sheng looked a little mysterious: "This is a famous dish that our mountain people entertain guests, called 'Lonely Nine Cold'." ”

Huineng heard that this was the words of the Cantonese people ridiculing the stingy rich man, and he was stunned and puzzled: "What is 'Lonely Nine Cold'?" ”

Tan Sheng explained triumphantly: "'Lonely' is Jane refers to the partridge, 'Nine' is Jane refers to the turtledove, and 'Han' refers to the white pheasant. This soup and dish is made with these three kinds of birds, and it is very delicious. ”

Thinking that the birds that were flying freely in the air had become a delicacy on the table, Huineng felt distressed.

This time, Huineng didn't drink bird soup, and he didn't catch bird meat with chopsticks, so he ate green vegetables.

Tan Sheng was strange and asked the reason, Huineng expressed his opinion, and advised them to kill as little as possible.

Tan Sheng felt that Huineng was quite reasonable, and in addition to eating less birds for himself in the future, he also advised other neighbors.

Since then, Huineng has been living in the turtle beak rock chamber in Shangai Ling.
