Chapter 60: Is This a Moral Issue, or an Ethical Issue?
The second week of classes started as scheduled.
Ravenclaw students experience an hour and a half of Potions class on Tuesday mornings, and Professor McGonagall's Transfiguration class in the afternoonβa full-day class that Ravenclaw attends with Hufflepuffs.
And either of these courses made Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff students sit on pins and needles.
When Potions class ended, they couldn't wait to leave the classroom to avoid being scolded by Professor Snape again.
When the transfiguration class ended, they looked a little depressed.
Because Transfiguration is so hard compared to other spells!
Even though this was their third transfiguration lesson, many of them still failed to turn matches into needles. Professor McGonagall has been saying that Gryffindor's Hermione Granger was able to change matches in the first class and successfully earned Gryffindor five points, which was even more difficult for them to accept.
When the other students left the classroom, Professor McGonagall looked at the only student who remained in the classroom and asked gently:
"Mr. Black, are you still confused?"
Ash took out the questions he had prepared early in the morning and asked:
"Professor McGonagall, what do you think is the difference between a werewolf and an Animagus?"
"Werewolves?"
Professor McGonagall frowned slightly, and she pushed her wand through her glasses on the bridge of her nose, and spoke:
A similar point has been made, and he has written a paper on this in an attempt to argue that werewolves are just a special kind of Animagus. In his paper, he cites many, many similarities between werewolves and animagus, such as the fact that both can transform between humans and animals, and both are affected by the nature of some animals when transformed. β
"But you have to know that there is an essential difference between the two."
Professor McGonagall said with a very serious expression:
"The Animagus can only transform into ordinary animals, but the animal form of the werewolf is a truly magical creature! Their special ability is to be able to turn normal people into werewolves through bites, through the contact of saliva and blood. β
"Moreover, werewolves have no control over when they transform, they can't usually complete the transformation, but they will transform uncontrollably at the full moon, and no werewolf can control themselves when they transform, although they can have a complete memory of the transformation period afterwards......"
"In every way, werewolves are very different from normal Animagus."
Ash thought for a moment, then asked:
"Could that werewolf be the result of a wizard's failed attempt to transform into a magical creature?"
Professor McGonagall glanced at him and replied calmly:
"The paper I just mentioned is full of loopholes and has not been widely accepted by the wizarding community."
"The author of the paper, Tisam Presti, went on to put forward ideas such as 'werewolves are cursed Animagus' and 'werewolves are magical creatures transformed by wizards and are special Animagus', but he disappeared completely shortly thereafter."
"Mr. Black, do you know why?"
Ash hesitated for two seconds and asked:
"Because he's a werewolf?"
"Yes."
Professor McGonagall bowed her head slightly, exclaiming, "Everything he did was to make werewolves acceptable to wizards, and he has dedicated his life to researching ways to restore werewolves to normal. β
"And he himself strictly adheres to the Werewolf Code of Conduct, locking himself up before each full moon transformation, which allows him to live safely and legally with the wizard at all times."
But because of the publication of those papers, the Aurors of the Ministry of Magic became suspicious of him. Eventually, on a full moon night, two Aurors from the Ministry of Magic broke into his home, one of them was bitten to death by the out-of-control Tisam, the other was bitten, and Tisam himself was later killed by other wizards who heard the movement nearby and rushed to him. β
Ash didn't know how to complain, so he had to break into someone's house on a full moon night, and he knew in advance that the other party was suspected of being a werewolf. However, the Aurors of the Ministry of Magic probably also wanted to catch the thief and take the stolen goods, and wanted to catch Tisam, but he didn't expect it to overturn in the gutter, and he didn't catch it and put his life into it.
Professor McGonagall did not answer Ash's question directly, but the example she gave illustrates her attitude:
She doesn't think werewolves are a special kind of Animagus.
Ash pondered for two seconds and asked:
"Professor McGonagall, do you know about the werewolves in the Forbidden Forest?"
"Of course."
Professor McGonagall nodded, and continued:
"When Dumbledore proposed to release these werewolves into the Forbidden Forest, I was adamantly opposed. Although it is true that these werewolves do not get out of control during the full moon, they still have the ability to infect normal people and become werewolves, which is undoubtedly a huge threat to Hogwarts. β
She paused, looked at Ash, and said slowly:
"Of course, I also know that you are trying to domesticate these werewolves, Mr. Black, and I think your problem should be related to them."
"Yes, Professor McGonagall."
Ash nodded frankly, he explained
"In fact, I'm working on a way to turn these werewolves back into humans. If this research succeeds, then I may be able to get a way to get the other werewolves back to normal. β
"Turn them back into people?" Professor McGonagall's eyes were a little startled.
"Yes."
Ash said solemnly, "I think this may be the key to saving the werewolves!" β
It was a lie, he didn't care if the other werewolves lived or died, he just wanted to restart his experiment.
But he couldn't start by saying that he was going to conduct human experiments on wizards, it was too shocking for Dumbledore or any other wizard to accept. But if it was to start with magical creatures, the experiment would be too tepid to meet Ash's needs.
Therefore, starting with a werewolf is undoubtedly Ash's best choice.
On the one hand, this does not cause rejection in the wizarding world, after all, most wizards do not consider werewolves to be their own kind. And werewolves are the closest magical creatures to humans, and experimenting with them is almost the same as experimenting with wizards.
"Turn werewolves back into humans?"
Professor McGonagall frowned, and for a moment she even thought Ash was whimsical.
But when you think about it, there seems to be a little bit of truth to it.
The biggest problem with werewolves is that they are completely unable to control themselves when transforming, so they cannot be accepted by the wizarding world.
And although the werewolves in the Forbidden Forest can control themselves, they can't turn into human form, and they can't be accepted either.
But if the two can be combined, there may really be a chance to solve this problem that has plagued the wizarding world for thousands of years!
Professor McGonagall thought for a long time, and did not directly reject Ash's proposal, but calmly proposed:
"If it's just to turn those werewolves into 'human' form, I don't think it's a difficult task, as long as you can master Transfiguration. But if you want to really turn them into people, it's not just Transfiguration that can be solved. β
"Of course, I'm not going to dismiss your idea, you can try to do it first, it's not a bad thing."
"Yes, Professor McGonagall."
Ash nodded with a heavy expression, as if he felt a heavy responsibility-
But no.
With Professor McGonagall's endorsement, he couldn't do it now.
This means that even if something happens in the future, as long as it's not too serious, Professor McGonagall will help him out......
Professor McGonagall was unaware of his dark thoughts, but suggested:
"I remember there was a book in the forbidden section that recorded similar research, and you could check it out."
