Chapter 14: Just an ordinary hometown
Oh my God, Victor looked at the fireworks at the foot of the hill and thought to himself. The crater above appeared in a violent eruption, fireballs and foul-smelling clouds of smoke flew out, and the earth trembled.
Although unreligious, the adventurer prayed to the twelve gods that Winkel would not really explode when he went berserk. "Man ......"
"Chieftain ......" Red and the other kobolds cowered at the sight and hid behind the mountain of lead that Wankel's treasure had turned into.
"I think it's better not to talk about it again near Wankel." The animals all nodded immediately. "He will eventually calm down, but when he does, we offer full emotional support to our beloved dragon ruler and are careful to avoid using the word 'lead' until we die. This is for everyone's good. β
Victor glanced at the chaos around him; Without Van Kerr's support, he managed to make a barely decent emergency landing on the wasteland and hid the treasure there. It's not that he thinks someone wants to steal it now.
Maybe they should consider becoming plumber adventurers? That's good for Mario.
"Chief, what are we going to do?" Blue asked him in horror, asking for guidance.
"Now...... Well, you have family here, right?" The animals nodded. "Visit them, or practice your dance. Take a break for a while. β
"But the chief," Pinker protested, "we can't abandon Young Master Winkel when he needs help!"
The ground shook with another violent explosion. Victor looked back at the mountain and noticed that the giant monster was fleeing from the volcano. It seems that the local bad guys have wisely decided to flee the area. A huge worm flew over the edge of the crater, most likely thrown by Winkel.
How long has the dragon been furious? God? Or if he kills Fulben, will he calm down?
"Okay," Victor said. "You see, 'Young Master Wink' is too angry to act rationally, and he can't calm down for a while. Think of this as a vacation. You deserve it because you've done so well. β
As kobolds and kobolds kept exchanging glances, Victor suddenly realized that these professional minions had no concept of vacation at all. They only serve the larger creatures and do not understand life outside.
"Listen, Minions, I've got a secret mission for you. Do you remember Winkel's brilliant vision of the V&V?" Just mentioning the name gave him cancer. "You said that the local slave job market is crowded, and Your Majesty is short of slaves. So, get us some more Minions. β
"Chief, you ......" They seemed to be crying, even the undead. Are you going to replace us?"
"No, actually, you're no longer interns now, not even new Minions, but Minions adjutant." Victor said impromptuly. "You will be my administrators, but above the new minions. The elite of our adventurous guilds. β
"We ...... We're promoted!" Tears quickly turned into joy, and Xiaohong jumped up. "Ascension!"
"Then let's go find more interns." Victor made a dramatic gesture. "But it will be your responsibility, so only accept the best."
"Yes, sir!" They ran so fast that Victor's eyes could barely keep up with them.
Truth be told, Victor began to like to take the Minions around. He mostly blamed it on Stockholm Syndrome and Winkel Syndrome, but it felt good to be obeyed rather than obeyed.
Damn, he's going to turn into a dragon.
After that farce with the Duchess, Victor is almost trapped by Winkel. Without the dragon's protection, he would not have been able to step into Gadmani without being executed. More retinue means fewer people are likely to fight him.
Now that Victor is alone, he decides to check out a nearby village and maybe he can buy supplies. He knew the Minions' warnings about the place, but if he was careful, he might be able to handle it himself.
From a distance, it seems that the town has less than 200 people living there. It was a small farming community, and Victor recognized olive groves, citrus groves, and some strange orchards, and even a vineyard. The huge stone house can accommodate an entire extended family, reminding Victor of American ranching.
In addition, he noticed that they raised much more sheep than they needed.
Aside from these details and the ubiquitous smell of dogs, even if he couldn't see, the village seemed relatively normal. Victor cautiously approached it, and two locals immediately came to meet him.
The two men look like a pair of hillbillies on the farm, one man is almost 30 years old, and the other girl is a little younger than Victor herself. Both are brown-skinned and have eyes of the same color and are very similar, and Victor believes they must be members of the same family.
"Hello, traveler," the man said loudly. He was a burly man, with thick black hair, dressed in a dirty rancher's outfit, and looked like Clint Eastwood
t Eastwood) in a western. "I'm a croissant and this is my sister chocolate. Welcome to the Whispering Nation. β
"Hello, handsome man," said the girl, who had long coffee-colored hair and was beautiful in Little Red Riding Hood's clothes, "you are an adventurer who has come to hunt dragons, right?" Right?"
Victor had a strange feeling and had many eyes on him. "Dragon hunting?"
The croissant pointed to the volcano. "There was a dragon who had just dug a nest in our mountains and frightened the livestock. If you can kill it, that will help us a lot. β
"No, I'm the lead merchant," Victor said with a blank face.
"Leader?" The croissant said it again, bewildered.
"Lead. I love lead. Are you all vampires?"
"What? Of course not! Vampires are mean and tasteless things! Nobody likes them!" Tasteless... Strange words. "Why all of a sudden accusation against you, stranger?"
"My kobold trainee told me there was a bad moon spell here, and you're a creepy village in the middle of nowhere. I've seen the movie and I can defend myself. β
Victor suddenly realized that the words were meaningless, but the two seemed to understand. Becoming more and more suspicious, the adventurer decided to use [Monster Insight] on them, just in case.
croissant
Werewolf (Humanoid/Beast)
Powerful anti-moon, beast, madness and fairy effects.
Weak against silver, kill, and beast killer effects.
Chocolate's older brother, a werewolf; Can transform into a giant half-breed wolf at will, but will go berserk at the full moon. It's a bit rough, especially when you mention Revodang. God, if you mention Revodang, you're so beep.
Chocolati
Werewolf (Humanoid/Beast)
Powerful anti-moon, beast, madness and fairy effects.
Weak against silver, kill, and beast killer effects.
Pretty Little Red Riding Hood, full of enemies of grandmothers, croissants' sister. She is the priestess of Ethan Grim, the god of beasts, and she is sweet and innocent on the outside, but she is not. Found you charismatic so appetizing and wondered if she should cook you with stew or chili sauce.
"Ah, werewolves! Bad Moon, of course you will become werewolves. β
"Wait, you're ......," the croissant asked, then turned to his sister. Is he one of us?"
Chocolate said a few words, apparently casting a spell on Victor. She immediately smiled happily. "It's okay, brother, he's a monster too!" Humanoid/Dragon!"
"Oh my gosh, I thought you were a homeless man and no one would miss you." "We avoided a terrible mistake. I'm sorry. β
"You're going to kill me?"
"It's not us," Croissant shrugged. "Some villagers often feed strangers to the children of the moon people, believing that the dragon is a punishment for their tardiness. I don't condone this kind of behavior, but we're an open-minded community, you know? I hope you can forgive us for our misunderstanding. β
Of course! This made Victor feel so much better!
"Guys, it's okay!" Kosson shouted in the direction of the settlement. "He's a monster too!" You can take off your disguise!"
Victor breathed a sigh of relief when he heard this, and watched in amazement as the locals walked out of their houses.
Half of them looked human-like, but [Monster Insight] told him that most of them were werewolves or shapeshifters, like doppelgangers; The other half is not. Victor notices a large group of pale ghouls, a squid-human hybrid with a calm head, a rusty steel golem, and a dozen or so creatures that emerge directly from the bestiary.
The whole village is full of humanoid monsters.
Victor blinked, as he recognized a familiar figure among them, a tall lizardman with sandy scales, fangs, and long claws. The humanoid lizard had short swept-back horns and a spiky tail, but her muscular body was mostly draped in brown and green travel robes. As usual, she carried a belt filled with potions and various spices, and the black sword of the Night Blade was tattooed on the left side of her face. βSavou
euse ?β Victor called her. "Sav, is that you?"
"Vic?" The beast took a few steps from the crowd to get a better view of him. Except for her skin tanned a little, she was exactly the same as he remembered, with those warm, green reptilian eyes. "Hey, Vic!"
"Hey, dry sausage!" Victor waved at her. During his short career as a professional thief, she was his brief friend, teaching him the ropes of stealing. "Long time no see!" What are you doing here?"
Business. She winked at him. "We're talking to the locals about building a warehouse there, so the guild leader of Nightblade sent me."
"Yes, sounds like a good holiday."
"Aha, sometimes it's nice to take a break from the garbage collection. I'm sorry you've left us, Vic, you're a great recycler. β
Ah, the old naming conventions. Replace stealing with "repossession", assassination with "garbage collection", and extortion with "community contribution". No wonder Victor left the criminal syndicate as soon as he succeeded.
"By the way, Vic, why didn't you tell me you were a drake in disguise?" You actually hide it from me, I feel insulted. β
"It's a recent change," Victor replied. "So what is this, a secret community of humanoid monsters?"
"Yes and no, we disguised ourselves as humans to hide from the inquisitors and adventurers who often roamed this area," Chloe Sant explained. "They're always trying to get rid of us."
"So we killed them first while they were sleeping," Chocolate chirped with a sweet, happy smile that sent chills down Victor's spine.
"We also have a school for mimics and other shapeshifters so they can learn to fit in in a safe, family-friendly environment," Chloe Sant said, before he shook Victor's hand firmly. "Victor, is that so?" Nice to meet you, what kind of monster are you?"
"I'm the dragon's chief of staff," Victor explained, a few locals whistling.
"The dragon?" Croissant glanced at the volcano.
"Yes. We had come to take over the castle, but the current owner made a joke about my 'master' and he didn't quite accept it. β
"Master? Fu
ibo
Is it?" Victor couldn't help but laugh when he heard the stupid joke of the croissant. The werewolf's tone hinted that this wasn't the first time the Lich had caused them trouble. "I've heard that he's very nasty, that there was a monster who turned him into a cave troll and then turned himself into a lich. He basically doesn't bother us, so we don't bother him either, but he's very open to the adventurers we offer trying to challenge him. β
"I think he's bored and lonely in his castle," Chocolate said in a conspiratorial tone.
"So, Vic, is what I'm hearing true?" Saules asked. "You fed the Duchess of Yuscal a dragon?"
"What about you?" Chocolati
E's eyes twinkle with stars.
"I ...... "Hmm...... Strictly speaking, it was he who tricked Van Kerr into hunting the Scorch Oven Monster instead of the Sea Monster, which indirectly led to the disaster. "You can say ......"
The croissant frowned. "That's a bit excessive, isn't it?"
"I don't understand, Vic, did you leave us, or didn't you leave us?" Saules asked. "Because it seems to me that feeding a nobleman to a dragon is too much like a nightingale."
"I don't think my current job is much different from what I used to do," Victor admits.
"Anyway," croissant interjected. "We are excited to welcome you to our community. How long are you going to stay?"
"I don't know, as long as the dragon stays here. Maybe longer. "If Winkel really kills Furiben and gets the promised pay, then they might settle in this area." Why is this question asked?"
"Well, they're a small community, and they want more people to avoid inbreeding," Savou
Euse replied. "They have a good open-door policy for newcomers. Isn't it, croissants?"
"Yes, we are also recent immigrants. We used to live in the Jevodan forest in Gadmanje. Ah, the times are wonderful. We've had the best hunting grounds and so much food around. β
Forest......
"But that was before some stupid human and their pet red dragon burned it to ashes while hunting demonsβ"
The croissant stopped halfway through speaking, and then glared at Victor suspiciously.
Oooh.
