Chapter 7: Lost Hopes
Early the next morning, a boy appeared in the "Fantastic Zoo" store in Diagon Alley.
His eyes were red, his face was tired, he looked like he hadn't slept well last night, especially with a dead toad in his hand, which looked very funny.
The boy was none other than Matthew Wakefield.
His exhaustion was normal, as he had barely closed his eyes last night.
It is not surprising that after such a terrible incident, I am afraid that few people will be able to fall asleep. All night long, he wondered if he would die like the poor toad in his bed, and then the strange book appeared beneath him.
Thankfully, that didn't happen, and he was still alive until the next morning.
The strange book remained quietly in the glass box, not moving.
Matthew didn't dare to touch it, he just fished the dead toad out of the glass box and ran to Diagon Alley.
......
"You mean, this little guy died suddenly?"
The owner of the "Fantastic Zoo", the witch with heavy glasses, took the toad's corpse from Matthew's hand in some unbelief.
"What's going on, you have to know that the life force of the toad is very tenacious. She muttered.
Matthew spread his hands: "Ma'am, I would also like to know what is going on. β
"Wait a minute!"
As she spoke, the witch pulled her wand from her waist and waved it gently.
A magnifying glass flew out of the store from somewhere and into her hand. Then he sat down at the wooden table next to her, placed the dead toad in front of him, then raised his magnifying glass and began to take a closer look.
Matthew could only wait from the sidelines.
While waiting, he was also carefully observing the witch's expression...... At first she had been indifferent, but it seemed that after seeing something, a horrified expression appeared on her face.
"What's the matter, ma'am?" he asked softly.
"I didn't ...... Nothing ......" The witch shook her head violently, her frightened face quickly turning into a look of disbelief: "This can't be ......"
Matthew bit his lip, and he tried to make his tone as casual as possible: "Is the cause of the toad's death strange?"
"The poor little fellow is as if he had been scared to death...... "The witch said with some incoherent words, "it is impossible...... It won't be like that...... It's just a toad, and no one would do that to it......"
She stood up tremblingly, and without hesitation, threw the body of the black-eyed toad into the trash.
Her voice gradually regained its calmness: "I will compensate for this, sir, and you can choose another toad in the shop." β
Although her state is still very wrong.
When she reached into the cage to catch the toad, she missed it and almost fell into the cage, she pressed two quills in a row while writing the transaction records, and when Matthew took the new toad, she accidentally kicked over a kettle on the ground......
All in all, when Matthew was sent away from her shop like a plague god, the bespectacled witch breathed a sigh of relief.
......
The performance of the witch, Matthew Wakefield 1510 is all in the eyes.
The worries and doubts in my heart have also become deeper.
But he didn't dare to continue to stimulate her, after all, although the other party seemed to be unrelenting, he was a real adult witch...... As an underage child who didn't know anything about magic, it was almost impossible for her to ask anything if she didn't want to say it.
With the new toad in his hand, he made it to his next destination:
Blotted Bookstore.
The clerks at the Blotted Bookstore didn't seem to remember that the boy had been here once yesterday, and they still received him with a smile on their faces.
Matthew wandered around the bookstore, pondering the language, and he didn't dare ask directly about the book.
After about three to five minutes of shopping, Matthew slowly approached a clerk who was not surrounded by many people:
"Your side...... Is there such a thing as a little older...... Ancient books ......," he asked softly.
"No!" replied the clerk without raising his head.
"Really?"
Matthew saw the other party raise his head, and quickly added: "A friend of mine told me that he found an old ...... with yellowed pages in the Hogwarts bookcase that your bookstore gave him before."
"He's lying!" the clerk said unceremoniously, with a very indifferent expression on his face: "There can't be anything in the Hogwarts bookcase that doesn't belong inside, and besides, the Blotted Bookstore only sells new books, if you want to find that kind of old antique, you should go to the library!"
"But......," Matthew wanted to say something.
"If you're here to talk to someone, not buy a book, then get out of here!" said the clerk impatiently, "I can give you a little help!"
He stood up and drew a wand from his belt as he stoodβ
Before Matthew could react, he was pushed out of the bookstore by an invisible force, and he couldn't control his actions at all...... The boy was easily pushed out of the Blotted bookstore, and then fell heavily to the cobblestone floor of Diagon Alley.
Several wizards in black robes hurried past him, and no one paid any attention to him.
Matthew got up from the ground in a bit of a mess and patted the dust off his body.
I don't think I can ask where the book came from...... One last look at the sign of the Blotted Bookstore, he thought to himself.
However, although the clerk's attitude and actions just now were very rough, what he said didn't seem to be a fake when you think about it......
So, how did that book come about?
......
Matthew slumped back to the entrance to Diagon Alley.
He doesn't have a wand, so he can't get through here...... He had to wait for a wizard to pass by, as he had come, and then walk in after him.
His heart was a little heavy, and the strange book weighed on his heart like a mountain.
What to do?
The only way I could think of it now was to wait until Hogwarts and give the book to Albus Dumbledore. With Professor Dumbledore's knowledge, he might be able to figure out a way to help him get out of his predicament......
Suddenly, Matthew froze.
In such a world, would Albus Dumbledore still be the headmaster of Hogwarts?
I'm afraid not......
With this hope dashed, he smiled dismally and walked to room thirteen of the Leaky Cauldron Bar.
