Chapter 6: The Book of Mysteries
There is no doubt that the bespectacled witch of the "Fantastic Zoo" was right at the time.
The toad that Matthew had bought was noisier than expected, and its screams had barely stopped since returning to Room 13 of the Leaky Cauldron.
In this case, it is almost impossible to stay in the room.
Eventually, Matthew came up with a way to hang the glass box containing the toad on the balcony of the room, then closed the window, and the whole world fell silent in an instant.
It was nearly noon, and he walked out of his room and went downstairs for a light lunch.
Apparently the lunch was not a pleasant one, though, for there was a strange man next to him who was almost wrapped in a thick woollen coat (it was August), and who looked like an "old witch" in appearance.
The "old witch" ordered a plate of bloody pig liver, and then opened her bloody mouth and gnawed in front of Matthew with relish.
Fortunately, Matthew's psychological quality has always been good, and he didn't spit out what he ate before. He even finished a baked potato in front of the other party.
Climbing the dirty, old wooden staircase again, Matthew glanced at the other rooms on the second floor.
In addition to him, there seem to be several children of his age living on this floor.
They should all be the same as him, Muggle-born first-year Hogwarts freshmen.
Matthew wasn't in a hurry to "get to know" them, though, and went straight back to his room.
......
After returning to the room, Matthew first sorted out all the things he had purchased this morning and put them away in different categories.
Then, he took out the entire carton of magic textbooks that had been given to him by the Blotted Bookstore and moved it to the wooden table.
Tear open the seal and remove the Hogwarts textbooks inside.
Standard Spell Level 1...... Beginner Transfiguration Guide...... Dark Arts Self-Defense Guide......
These textbooks are similar to the content of the original Harry Potter books in my memory.
There are also four quills...... Two bottles of black ink and one bottle of red ink...... A large stack of letterheads......
Suddenly, Matthew Wakefield's movements stopped.
Because he found that at the very bottom of the carton, there was one more thing -
Another book.
It's not too thick, and the cover is definitely no more than half an inch (note: about 1.77 cm), which is much thinner than any previous Hogwarts textbook.
The appearance of the book shows a quaint texture, and the paper is faintly yellowed from the side, most likely some years old.
The cover on the front and back covers is made of a strange kind of leather, which for some reason makes people feel a little creepy.
Throughout the book, there is a sense of indescribability.
Matthew was stunned, and his intuition told him that this thing in front of him might be dangerous......
"What the hell is this?" he frowned, retracting his hand frozen in mid-air.
Reaching into his pocket, he took out the parchment list that had been crumpled.
Carefully checked what was written on the list with what had just been taken out of the cardboard box.
Nothing goes wrong, this strange book at the bottom of the cardboard box is not on the list;
Matthew didn't act rashly, he didn't even touch the book of unknown origin, because he hadn't forgotten that he was in a magical world now.
Even an ordinary journal may contain the consciousness of a powerful dark wizard, enough to manipulate a wizard who tries to use it...... Not to mention the mysterious book in front of me, as if the word "danger" is written all over the face.
Matthew took a deep breath and finally decided to make a more deliberate choice.
He gently rang the housekeeper's bell in the room.
A minute later, there was a knock on the door to the room, which then opened.
A hunchbacked figure appeared at the door of the room, and it was Tom, the emaciated, shriveled bar owner with his teeth gone.
"Mr. Wakefield, may I ask for anything?" he asked, grinning, though his smile was rather ugly.
"Excuse me, sir. Matthew said, "Can you help me get this carton and its contents in the trash?"
He pointed to the cardboard box with the Blotted Bookstore logo on it.
"We're happy to help you!" said the bar owner.
He walked into the room and picked up the cardboard box.
Looking at the hunchbacked old man, he took the cardboard box out of the room with the contents and walked down the stairs.
Matthew suddenly felt a sense of relief, as if some mortal danger was far away from him.
......
In the afternoons and evenings, Matthew was in his room, flipping through the Hogwarts textbooks.
Although because he didn't have a magic wand at hand, he could only talk about it on paper, and he couldn't put it into practice at all.
However, even a cursory flip can show some clues.
The magic wasn't what he had imagined, it only took a few stupid waves of his wand and a few words of Latin in his mouth.
It also involves the control of emotions, the mastery of subjective awareness, and complex gestures that change depending on the situation......
All in all, mastering a spell was much more difficult than Muggles had imagined in previous lives.
It wasn't until the bell rang eleven in the middle of the night that Matthew put down a copy of "A Thousand Magical Herbs and Mushrooms" in his hand.
It's time to rest.
But before going to bed, Matthew remembered something.
It was his new pet, the toad he had just bought this morning, and he was still hanging it on the balcony outside the window.
It's time to get it back.
Speaking of which, he hadn't even come up with a name for the pet yet...... Otherwise, for the sake of the joy it screamed earlier, let's name it "excited".
Thinking wildly, Matthew smiled, opened the window, and retrieved the small glass box hanging on the balcony.
The toad's scream was no longer remembered, and it seemed that the little guy might have adapted to the environment here.
The pale green glow of the fireplace slightly illuminated the small glass box that Matthew was holding.
The smile on the boy's face froze for a moment.
The poor toad didn't scream, and it will never scream again.
It lay flat in a glass case, its white belly facing the sky, and its dark eye sockets formed two large bulges......
No more moving, no more chirping, no more life.
Apparently, it has been dead for a long time.
"How could it be ......," Matthew muttered to himself, and what surprised him the most was not the death of the toad, but—
Just under the toad's corpse, he saw a book.
A book that could barely exist in this glass case.
Appeared at the bottom of the cardboard box at the Blotted Bookstore for some reason, and then asked the bar owner Tom to throw away the mysterious book along with the cardboard box.
The sky outside the window suddenly turned a cold black gray, and a ray of crimson moonlight shone through the window on the floor of room thirteen of the Leaky Cauldron Bar.
