Chapter 96: The Debate I
"Master, since I am troubled by this demon, how can I get rid of it? Jiang Liu'er couldn't help asking.
Master Yan continued: "You are trapped by three demons, one is a monkey who likes to laugh and play in pursuit of a free and unrestrained life, one is a pig demon who longs for love in the world and is infatuated with lust, and the other is a dutiful son who wants to kill his father and enemy with his own hand and feels deep remorse. They all come from your heart, and the root of this is the affliction of self-grasping ignorance, which is the manifestation of greed, ignorance, and naivety. To subdue the demons in your heart, you must sincerely recite the six-character Great Ming God Mantra a thousand times!"
"Six-character Great Ming God Mantra?!" Jiang Liu'er was a little moved.
"Exactly! These six-character Da Ming God mantra is the six characters of Om, Ma, Ng, Horn, Mi, and Ng. As he spoke, Master Yan wrote these six words in the void with his hand.
Jiang Liu'er has a very strong understanding and a very high Buddha nature, and when he heard the name and pronunciation of the six characters of "Da Ming God Mantra Om, Ma, Why, Horn, Mi, and 吽", he seemed to be very familiar with it, and immediately inspired the supreme and solid Vajra bodhicitta hidden deep in his heart.
Master Yan Zhengse said: "Reciting the six-character mantra 10,000 times can eliminate the obstacles that have accumulated hundreds of thousands of eons; reciting the six-character mantra 100,000 times can no longer be born in the path of the three evils (i.e., the path of animals, hungry ghosts, and hells); by reciting the six-character mantra a million times, you can attain the land of immortality; by reciting the six-character mantra 10,000 times, you can manifest the Dharma body, reincarnate body, and incarnate yourself, and Bodhi can become a Buddha by wearing it." ”
Hearing this, Jiang Liu'er hurriedly clasped his palms together and thanked Master Yan. At the same time, three words expressing his inner thoughts immediately burst out from the bottom of his heart: "There is no obstacle in the heart, there is no obstacle in the way, there is no terror." This is the sentence in his later translation of the Heart Sutra.
......
Luoyang, the eastern capital, is full of humanities and rich Buddhist atmosphere, where high monks gather, and everyone respects the Three Treasures. Jiang Liuer was attracted by the strong Buddhist atmosphere of Peony City and made a special trip to the Pure Land Temple to give lectures.
The Pure Land Temple, also known as the Pure Land Dojo of the Eastern Capital, was built in the first year of the Northern Wei Dynasty. When he came to the familiar Pure Land Temple again, Jiang Liuer was already the main speaker of the debate meeting, and was invited by the abbot of the Pure Land Temple to give a lecture.
On the first day of the lecture, the open space in front of the pulpit was already crowded by many monks and laypeople who came from the Pure Land Temple and other major avenues.
Jiang Liuer (Xuanzang), a young man who walked on Leo, wore a blue-gray coarse cloth monk's robe, which was simple and capable, but also looked clean and refreshing. Although he was not wearing a big red robe, and he still exuded a bit of the green atmosphere unique to young people, however, when he sat on the throne, his smile suddenly changed, and his whole person became dignified and dignified, just like a real high monk.
It is truly amazing that a young Buddhist disciple can behave so wisely and calmly, solemnly and magnificently in front of the public!
"Amitabha!"
A clear Buddha horn sounded at the right time, solemn and powerful, and even suppressed the sound of everyone's chatter, and the audience suddenly became silent, and everyone focused on the young monk sitting on the futon.
But I saw Jiang Liu'er standing up silently, looking around, there seemed to be a power in a pair of eyes as clear as water, and wherever this power went, there was silence.
"The little monk's name is Xuanzang," Jiang Liu'er said, "Today, when you Tanyue arrives here, you have a relationship with the Buddha. Now, it is up to the little monk to preach the Dharma to you. ”
After saying that, Jiang Liu'er bowed with his palms together and sat down slowly.
"The Lotus Sutra clouds: The Buddhas want to make sentient beings enlighten the Buddha's perception and make them pure, so that they appear in the world. I want to show all sentient beings, the Buddha's knowledge, and appear in the world. I want all beings to realize the Buddha's knowledge and appear in the world. I want all sentient beings to enter the Buddha and see the Tao and appear in the world. Sariputta is for the Buddhas to appear in the world for a great cause. ”
His voice was louder and louder, as if it was full of magnetism, and the scene was silent.
Jiang Liuer quoted scriptures and classics when preaching the scriptures, and the righteousness was clear and simple, which was quite popular with everyone. However, after all, the Buddhist scriptures are profound, and it is inevitable that there are many words and phrases that are difficult to understand. Therefore, after preaching the scriptures every day, Jiang Liuer will always leave some time dedicated to asking questions and solving doubts for everyone, and some good deeds will of course take the opportunity to make things difficult for the speaker.
"The Book of Filial Piety" has clouds: the body is skinned, and the parents who receive it dare not destroy it. Is it against filial piety for Shamen to cut his hair?"
Jiang Liu'er didn't seem to be nervous at this moment, and immediately replied calmly: "Shamen cut out of the house, it is with a pure and simple body to promote the supreme avenue, which is called standing on the road. Even if you don't cut your hair, isn't you also a monk?"
Hearing this, the middle-aged Taoist priest was immediately dumbfounded and stopped speaking.
Everyone didn't expect that this young monk, who seemed to be only in his twenties, was so calm and indifferent. There was no resentment in his eyes because someone deliberately made things difficult, and there was no contempt for the challenger in his tone, and his every move was upright and generous, just like a monk who had practiced for many years, and he couldn't help but be admired.
"Uncle Xuanzang, the question I want to ask is...... How can I become a Buddha?" asked a young novice from the Pure Land Temple in a childish voice.
Seeing this innocent and lovely little novice, Jiang Liu'er's mind suddenly appeared in the scene where he often pestered Elder Faming to ask questions when he was young, so he replied with a smile: "Let go and forget it to become a Buddha." ”
The little novice blinked with a pair of big eyes as if he didn't understand, and asked, "What is the Buddha?"
"A Buddha is your every move, your word and deed, your thoughts. The Buddha is yourself. ”
Facing everyone, Jiang Liuer added: "The world abandons distracting thoughts and can see the clear world. Only by having no desires and no desires can we experience the Buddha's will. ”
"Thank you, Uncle Xuanzang!" Xiao Shami clapped his hands in thanks.
"If you want to become a Buddha, you have to have enlightenment. May I ask the mage, where is the heart?" asked a gray-clothed layman with an unassuming appearance.
"When the mind is born, all kinds of laws are born, and when the mind is destroyed, all kinds of laws are destroyed; one thought corresponds to one thought, and one thought corresponds to one thought. This is the heart!"
"As for where is the heart...... Well, when you think about the good things in the world, your heart is heaven, and when you think about the evil in the world, you turn into hell. When the heart is poisoned, people become beasts, when the heart is compassionate, there are bodhisattvas everywhere, when the heart is born of wisdom, everywhere is a happy land, and when the heart is stupid, there is a sea of suffering everywhere. ”
"Then how do you do it?" the gray-clad lay man continued.
"Everything in the world is incarnated, the mind does not move, everything does not move, the mind does not change, everything does not change. ”
"All mistakes are made by avoiding one's own heart. Calm down, burn a stick of incense, examine your heart, and maybe you can realize something. ”
Jiang Liuer smiled at the monks and laymen in the audience.
