It seems that it was the king of Hades who asked for the first, and Judge Cui took the lead after getting the news. In short, everyone has a lot of respect for Tang Taizong.

When he arrived at the Netherworld, although the king of Hades and the judges were very "respectful" to him, all kinds of ghosts in the Yama Hall were very unfriendly to him. Emperor Taizong was mainly subjected to three thrilling "intimidations".

The first thing he encountered was his old man Li Yuan, brother Li Jiancheng, and younger brother Li Yuanji, who shouted: "Shimin is here, Shimin is here!" Taizong couldn't dodge and was pulled by him. Fortunately, Judge Cui summoned a green-faced fanged ghost envoy to retreat Jiancheng and Yuanji, and Taizong had to get out.

King Qin Guang said: "Hurry to get the book, see how much Your Majesty Yangshou Tianlu should have?" Judge Cui hurriedly turned to the secretary's room, and reviewed the general book of Tianlu, the king of all countries in the world, one by one, and saw that Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty was destined to be Zhenguan for 13 years. Judge Cui hurriedly took a large pen of thick ink, added two drawings to the word "one", and presented the book.

When the ten kings saw it, they saw that Taizong's name was destined for thirty-three years, and the king of Hades asked in surprise: "How many years has Your Majesty been on the throne?" Taizong said: "I have been on the throne for thirteen years now. Hades said: "Your Majesty is relieved, there are still twenty years of life." This is already a clear case, please return to the roots. ”

The Ten Yama Kings sent Judge Cui and Zhu Taiwei to send Emperor Taizong back to his soul.

Judge Cui made a tour guide by the way and took Tang Taizong to visit the underworld.

These people, no, they are not people, but ghosts! They are all here to stop Emperor Taizong and ask for his life.

This is the third intimidation. Panicked, the Taizong hid and hid, and the judge said: Your Majesty, those people are the ghosts of the sixty-four smoke and dust, the seventy-two grass cowards, the princes and the leaders; Your Majesty will have some money to give him to save you.

Taizong came here empty, where there was money, so he made a covenant, borrowed a treasury of gold and silver, and asked Taiwei to do his best to disperse.

The judge also instructed the ghosts: "These gold and silver, you can divide them equally, let your grandfather Tang over, his yang life is still early." I received the words of the Ten Kings, sent him back to his soul, and taught him to go to the yang world to do a water and land conference, and wait for you to be reborn, and then take a break. ”

When the demons heard the news, they got the gold and silver, and they all retreated.

The judge sent the Tang King until the Chaosheng Guidao Gate, and the judge said:

"Your Majesty to the yang world, do a water and land conference, and surpass the ownerless soul, don't forget. If there is no voice of resentment in the Yin Division, the Yang World will enjoy the celebration of peace. All the bad things can be changed one by one, and the people of the world will be good, and you will be disciplined for a long time, and the country will be forever. ”

Tang Wang played one by one, resigned from the judge, took off the yin, and returned to the yang world. began to recruit monks, built water and land conferences, and surpassed the lonely soul of Hades.

It can be seen from this that why did Emperor Taizong summon high-ranking monks from all over the country to hold a "water and land puja" on a grand scale? The reason is that this is why Judge Cui of the Yama Hall called Tang Taizong after his resurrection.

Judge Cui asked Tang Taizong to hold this water and land puja, which has two major benefits, and he said it very clearly:

1. All the bad things in the past can be corrected one by one.

If it is not good, it is evil, and all kinds of evils that have been done in the past, forcing the father, killing the brother, harming the younger brother, leveling the 64 places of smoke and dust, exterminating 72 grass bandits, conquering the south and the north, killing countless people, and even countless unjust souls who have died in vain to avenge their grievances, these can all be changed. As long as this water and land puja is held, it will be changed, and these countless lonely souls and wild ghosts who have died in vain will be exceeded, and you will no longer be held responsible.

2. Tell the world to be kind, discipline your descendants for a long time, and the country will be forever.

After holding this water and land puja, you can also set an example by taking the lead in doing good, and persuade everyone in the world to do good and not do evil. In this way, discipline your descendants will last forever.

Since he can have these two great benefits (the most worrying thing), why wouldn't Tang Taizong do it? So as soon as he returned to the yang world, he set about holding this water and land puja.

Because Tang Taizong held a large water and land festival, he attracted senior monks from all over the country. Among the eminent monks, Master Chen Xuanzang, a Tang monk, was "selected" to be the host of the altar.

In this water and land puja, 1,200 eminent monks from all over the country were selected from all over the country and gathered at Chang'an Huasheng Temple to build meditation couches, decorate merits, organize music, and distribute upper, middle and lower halls. In front of all the Buddhas, all the things are all together, and there is a time for the head. On the third day of September this year, the zodiac is a good day to start the 7749 day water and land conference.

Master Chen Xuanzang expounded on the master, and began to perform the wonderful scriptures. Taizong and the relatives of Emperor Wenwu all went to the meeting and listened to the lecture with incense.

So, how big is the scene of this water and land puja?

1. High level: This is a Buddhist event with the participation of all national leaders.

2. The number of people: 1,200 monks gathered to practice together.

3. Length of time: The time for planning and doing is 7749 consecutive days.

I'm sure you've never seen such a big scene of Buddhist activities.

So, can such a big scene surpass the lonely souls and wild ghosts who died in vain before? It's hard to say, but what is certain is that setting an example, taking the lead in doing good, and persuading people all over the world to believe in the Buddha and do good and not do evil and not harm the Tang Dynasty, this goal can be achieved 100 percent!

Tang Taizong knew this in his heart, because he was fully capable of controlling the influence of this water and land festival among the people!

But the first point is that Tang Taizong's heart is not counting, how many Taoist practices do you monks have? How much magic power do you recite sutras? Can you surpass the lonely soul and wild ghosts? Tang Taizong is absolutely skeptical.

At this time, what he was most concerned about was: whether the lonely soul and wild ghost who died in vain could be exceeded.

Transcendence, which refers to Buddhist activities such as chanting sutras to free ghosts from suffering, re-transcend, and reincarnate.

So, what kind of people can't be reborn after death? In the impression of our group of kind-hearted people, people who "do absolutely bad things" will never be able to be reborn.

However, we are talking about Journey to the West today, so we should respect the meaning of the original author to explain. The original author didn't say that it was a bad thing, and a person who did absolutely nothing could not be born. Instead, it says something like this:

When I went to the city of vain again, I only listened to the shouting of people, and clearly said: "Li Shimin is here, Li Shimin is here!" ...... They all shouted, "Give me back my life, give me back my life!" ...... The judge said, "Your Majesty, those people are the ghosts of the sixty-four places of smoke and dust, the seventy-two places of grass, the ghosts of all the princes and the leaders; ......”

Note: Those who are "dead in vain" are not allowed to be reborn.

These people, according to the book of life and death, were killed by Tang Taizong before the death period arrived, so they died in vain.

These lonely souls and wild ghosts who died in vain, they have no income and no care, he is not overborn, he just stays here, squats every day, and waits for you to come in this ghost place, hehe, one day, you Li Shimin will leave here, so that you don't want to be reincarnated and enjoy glory.

Do you say that Li Shimin is afraid of it?

Therefore, whether he can get rid of these lonely souls and wild ghosts who died in vain has become the biggest hidden pain in his heart!

Can you monks do it?! Can we get rid of all these lonely ghosts?!

Just when Tang Taizong was half-convinced, Guanyin Bodhisattva jumped out and said: "Your Hinayana teachings cannot exalt the dead, but only the vulgar and light." ”

If you hold this water and land puja, you can't get rid of all these lonely souls and wild ghosts who have died in vain!

You say, Guanyin Bodhisattva only said this sentence, did it go to the heart of Tang Taizong?

The Bodhisattva also said, "I have the Mahayana Dharma Three Tibets, and I can survive death and get rid of suffering." ”

As soon as these words came out, Tang Taizong's doubts in his heart were relieved, as if he had grasped a life-saving straw, and hurriedly asked: "Where is your Mahayana Buddhism?"

The Bodhisattva said: "In the Daxi Tianzhu Da Lei Yin Temple, my Buddha can solve the knot of a hundred grievances and eliminate the disaster without vain." Taizong was overjoyed and said: "The teacher is leading, please come to the stage to speak." ”

Guanyin Bodhisattva did not casually talk to him about any Mahayana scriptures, but showed her true body and let everyone know that she was the real Guanyin Bodhisattva. This is to further win the trust of Tang Taizong. And leave a post dotted the road:

On the ceremony, the Tang Dynasty, there is a wonderful text in the West. The journey is 108,000 miles, and the Mahayana is diligent.

This scripture returns to the kingdom and can surpass the ghosts. If there are those who are willing to go, seek the golden body of righteousness.

Note: For Tang Taizong, this scripture only has one functional role, which is very simple, that is, "can surpass the ghosts".

The Bodhisattva did not come to the stage to preach this true scripture of "being able to surpass the ghosts", but: If you want it, you can go to the Buddha of the West Heaven to get it. Taizong immediately ordered the monks: "And the victory will be won, and when I send someone to obtain the Mahayana scriptures, I will be honest and rebuild the good results." ”

Okay, the land and water pujas are not done, it is important to take the sutras, and when the sutras are obtained, then this puja will be redone. Why is it that the puja is only done by one-seventh of the way and then stopped? Because the Bodhisattva said that this degree will not exalt the dead, and it will be done in vain, and it will not work.

As mentioned earlier, Tang Taizong may have two purposes for holding this water and land puja. If he only wants to do it for the people of the world, to persuade all the people in the world to do good, then his purpose has been successfully achieved, and he will not be rare in the true scriptures of the Western Heavens, right?

But the fact is that he is very, desperate to obtain this scripture, then there is only one explanation: he wants to completely get rid of all these lonely souls and wild ghosts who died in vain! This is the most important thing. As for putting on a show and making a show for the people, it is secondary.

At this point, we can conclude that the real purpose of the reason why Tang Taizong wanted to go to the West Heaven to obtain the Mahayana scriptures:

1. It is not for the promotion of Buddhism.

2. It is not for the sake of universalizing all living beings in the world.

3. It is to eliminate the evil that you have done before, the iniquity you have done, the sins you have committed, and the evil spirits that you have done in your heart.

The reason why Tang Taizong needed the scriptures of the Buddha was to eliminate the evils, sins, and sins he had done before, and to clear the ghosts in his heart. It was explained last time. But think about it: If Guanyin Bodhisattva didn't tell Tang Taizong, would Tang Taizong know that the Buddha had this sutra?

If Tang Taizong didn't know that the Buddha had this scripture to relieve him, then he would not have sent Tang Seng to the west to learn the scriptures. So the key to the whole incident is also Guanyin Bodhisattva.

So, why did Guanyin Bodhisattva come to guide Tang Taizong? The eighth chapter of "Journey to the West" "My Buddha Makes Sutras and Transmits Extremely Optimistic Voices to Chang'an", which is very clear:

One day, the Buddha summoned all the Buddhas and disciples and said to the public: I have the Three Tibetan Sutras today, and I can persuade people to be good. I am about to send it to the eastern soil, and I will endure the stupidity of the sentient beings on that side, slander the truth, do not know the purpose of my Dharma, and neglect the authenticity of the Yoga. How to get a man with magic power, go to the east to find a good believer, teach him to go through thousands of mountains, pass through thousands of rivers, go to me to seek the true scriptures, and pass on the east land forever. Who wants to go for a walk?

Guanyin Bodhisattva said: "The disciple is not talented, and I wish to go to the East to find a person to learn the scriptures." ”

If you come to see it, you will be overjoyed and say: "You can't go to another one, you must be Venerable Guanyin, and you can only get it if you have great powers." ”

Whoever makes a big book, there must be an outline, and then the clues are in hand, and there is no confusion. This time is the general outline of the thousands of stories of learning from the scriptures, and if you don't know this, it is very easy to be confused by the wonderful stories in the process of learning the scriptures later.

From this general outline, it can be seen that the original reason for learning the scriptures was that the Buddha wanted to pass on the scriptures, not the Tang monks wanted to learn the scriptures, and no one wanted to take his scriptures at all.

For hundreds of years, no one has read through the text of this outline, and they have mistakenly changed the word "passing on the scriptures" as "learning the scriptures".

If the Buddha wants to pass on his scriptures, and to pass on his scriptures forever, this is actually quite difficult.

No, it is the sentient beings on that side who are stupid, slandering the truth, ignorant of the gist, and neglecting the authenticity.

How difficult is this? Whoever is sent there will not be able to accomplish this task, and only Guanyin Bodhisattva, who has great powers, can get it.

So, is my dignified China really stupid? So that the Buddha who has boundless Buddhism feels that it is difficult to pass on the scriptures, let's take a look at what is said in "Journey to the West":

1. Comrade Zhu Bajie in Yunzhan Cave in Fuling Mountain played the role of a "bandit" at the bottom of society at this time. Comrade Zhu Bajie didn't have a job to support himself, so he just lived by eating people.

When Zhu Bajie was a bandit, he relied on "cannibalism" to live, and he also "cannibalized people according to his book". It can be seen that Comrade Zhu Bajie is a bandit with the principle of "not killing" and "not robbing", which shows that he is only trying to solve the most basic problem of survival.

The Bodhisattva nodded him and said: "The ancients said, if you want to have a future, don't do not have a future." Since you have violated the law in the upper realm, you have not changed your murderous heart and injured your life and caused evil, but you are not punished for both crimes?"

Comrade Zhu Bajie said: "In the future, if you depend on you, teach me to eat the wind! As the saying goes, kill according to the official law, and starve and kill according to the Dharma." It's better to catch a pedestrian and eat his mother fatly! What do you care about two or three crimes, a thousand crimes!"

Comrade Zhu Bajie is very straightforward, he doesn't believe in Buddhism at all, even if Guanyin Bodhisattva himself stands in front of him, he doesn't believe in that. He only believes that it is better to fill his stomach than to sin.

The Bodhisattva took the robe and tin staff to Chang'an City to sell. encountered a few foolish monks who failed to be elected as the host of the water and land puja, but there were a few village banknotes. The foolish monk asked, "How much does your robe cost to sell?" and the Bodhisattva said, "The robe is worth five thousand taels, and the tin staff is worth two thousand taels." The foolish monk smiled and said, "These two leper monks are madmen and fools! These two coarse things are sold for 7,000 taels of silver? It's just that unless you put them on and live forever, you have to become a Buddha and become an ancestor, and they are not worth so much! If you take them, you can't sell them!"

Foolish monk, there are a few village bills. This is a representative of the class of the small rich and well-off, who have a few dollars in their hands. It's really hard to go to a place where there is no market to promote your products!

When we all read Journey to the West, we generally mistakenly think that the difficulty of learning scriptures is on the West Heaven Road. I always thought that Tang Seng went through all kinds of hardships was the biggest difficulty. Not really. There are two aspects of difficulty in total:

The first is that there is no market. The second is the difficulty on the road.

From the above words of the Buddha, it is very clear that he is not worried about the difficulties on the road, but about the fact that there is no market at all.
