1. Refreshing style

INTERVIEWER In your last interview, you said that your goal this year is to go to bed early and wake up early, how have you achieved your goal?

Yui Horie: It turns out that going to bed early and waking up early is such a difficult thing (laughs)! The goal of going to bed early and waking up early is a complete failure, even if it is late to get home from work, but if you go to bed right away, isn't it still considered to be early bedtime? But I still do this and that, and I always put off going to bed late (laughs).

- It doesn't seem to be very smooth (laughs), so in addition to going to bed early and getting up early, it has been more than two or three months since 2015, is it still smooth in other aspects?

Yui Horie: It's a bit strange to say that, but I haven't had a single thing that I think is really good until now (laughs)...... No, no! Now is not the time to waste your days and giggle!

- No, no, people don't think you're wasting your life. I only released a new album at the beginning of the year, but a new single was released a few days ago, and I even have to hold a concert later, which is a busy person's workload! Speaking of which, the new album "Garden at the End of the World" has a very strong color, and the newly released single "StayWithMe" gives a very refreshing feeling.

Yui Horie: It's really refreshing, because "DOGDAYS" is an anime where good children get together to play and spend rest days together, and there are no bad guys in it, and there are no radical descriptions, and it's a very cute fairy tale. The atmosphere of the work evokes memories of summer vacations when I was a child, so I wanted the theme song I sang to have a sense of nostalgia for that summer. Even though the anime was broadcast in the winter and the single was released in the spring, I decided to shoot the cover and music video in Singapore, where the climate is warm, and I was even more determined to make a new song full of summer memories.

INTERVIEWER Why did you choose Singapore as the location for filming?

Yui Horie: In December last year, I attended an event in Singapore called the Asian Anime Festival 2014. At that time, the top management of the record company said, "Why don't you just shoot here on location", and that's how it was decided to be in Singapore.

- "By the way" (laughs), but Singapore is also a good place to visit.

Yui Horie: Yes! At that time, it was decided to release a new single, so everyone talked about it and moved in the direction of shooting locations in Singapore. I had already gone to the UK to shoot my new album at the beginning of the year, so I'm too embarrassed to go abroad to shoot the location of my new single (laughs). So when the executives said, "Why don't you just stop by here (Singapore) for a location shot?" I happily agreed (laughs). I didn't know much about Singapore, but I wanted to shoot at a nice beach, and luckily I found a nice beach!

2. Summer memories of puddles

- Speaking of which, the ending theme song of the second season of "DOGDAYS", "Summer Promise" (original title: "Summer Promise") is also a song full of faint memories of summer.

Yui Horie: Yes, yes, yes! Even if you don't actually experience the memories in the MV, you will feel a feeling in your heart that you have experienced before. It can be said that the "DOYDAYS" series is such an impression in my mind that is full of good memories of summer. In the first season, there was a feeling that the protagonist had entered a fantasy world for an adventure, but from the second season, it evolved into a world view that made it easy to visit a fairy tale world, just like when I was a child, I went to Aomori's grandmother's house for the summer vacation. I think it's important to feel nostalgic for summer because it fits the world of DOGDAYS perfectly.

INTERVIEWER By the way, what are some of your summer memories? Is there anything particularly impressive?

Yui Horie: Ahhh There is a concrete house next to the paddy field, and there are a lot of weeds in front of the house, and there is a huge puddle in it, like a pool, and there are a lot of bugs in it!

- Hey, I remember you said you hated bugs, didn't you?

Yui Horie: When I was a child, I didn't hate it as much as I do now, and there were a lot of tadpoles, dragonfly larvae, and turtles in the puddles, which were very common insects at the time (laughs). It's a little disgusting to think about it now, but when I was in elementary school during the summer vacation, I used to catch bugs every day to play. The puddle disappears every winter, and it doesn't happen every year in summer.

INTERVIEWER I've never seen that puddle, but I can clearly imagine that this is what you just said about the unique scenery of summer. The CD cover of "StayWithMe" is the same, I haven't been to that place before, but it brings back memories of summer.

Yui Horie: Yes, I wore a wig to create a thoroughly summer vibe, because short hair will look more refreshing.

- Haven't you ever thought about actually cutting your hair short?

Yui Horie: If you cut it short, it may become more difficult to take care of your hair, so I don't plan to cut it short yet. However, during this shoot, I thought the wig was quite natural, and I used my own real hair on the sides of the hair! Of course, this is all thanks to the efforts of the makeup artist.

3. The relationship between the worldview of "DOGDAYS" and music

INTERVIEWER Since you have such a clear impression of this anime, did you decide on the direction of the theme song easily?

Yui Horie: You're right, in addition to the atmosphere of summer memories, DOGDAYS is also a work with many characters, so I wanted to add elements that express the inner feelings of each character.

INTERVIEWER When the piece was finished, did you suggest any revisions?

Yui Horie: Yes, at first, I didn't think the lyrics felt like a good fit, so I said, "Can you strengthen your determination to become stronger?" Although there have been some other modifications since then, the general direction is in line with the original conception.

——The atmosphere and main theme of the whole song are simple and easy to remember, making it easy for people to accept.

Yui Horie: I think so too, the tone of the whole song is a bit sad, but in the end, the momentum will grow, and it is a royal song that is suitable for both the real world and the fantasy world.

- What kind of song is the chorus's "Comet" (original title: "ほうき星")?

Yui Horie: "StayWithMe" is a sad and powerful song, so I wanted to choose a pop song that is the opposite of it. "Comet" is such a cute song, although the chorus does not need to think too much about the theme of the work "DOGDAYS", but judging from the results, this "Comet" should be the same as the Mishiore I play (full name: Mishiore· F. Biscody) is a good match. Mishiore is one of the stages of the story, the representative lord of the Biscody Republic, and is deeply admired by the people and his courtiers, and is a veritable and beloved princess. "Comet" gives the feeling of Mishioret jumping around in bed and playing, which I think fits well with her energetic personality.

4. Respect the singing of the score

- Is the song collection still smooth? Since the impression of both songs is so clear and clear, I believe you must have completed the recording very easily.

Yui Horie: No, no, every time the inclusion is not very smooth, after all, singing is not my main job...... And I always think about singing in pairs. It's like a quiz, I always want to sing according to the source, thinking that is the only correct one, and I don't change the way the score is assigned to sing. Of course, I will make a slight change at the concert, and I will be able to enjoy my songs while everyone is singing my songs at karaoke.

INTERVIEWER Do you want to perform as the score says rather than highlight your personality?

Yui Horie: Well, I'm probably not very good at expressing myself. I think that a little special temper is called personality, but I want people to listen to a good song more than such a personality. This is probably also a matter of my preference, I will sing it several times during the recording, and then choose one song in it as the official version, usually at this time I tend to choose one that I sing smoothly.

INTERVIEWER When you listen to the songs of other artists, especially those with strong personalities, do you think "I want to sing like her"?

Yui Horie: When I listen to the songs of other artists, I think she sings so well, and when I occasionally listen to the CDs of other voice actors, I don't know if it has something to do with professional habits, but I think their feelings are very rich! Of course, I also have my own feelings when I record songs, but it seems that it has become a habit for me to sing plainly.

5. Appreciate "DOGDAYS" with a travel mood

INTERVIEWER I think there must be some fans who love to listen to your songs, but they don't watch anime very much. If you were asked to explain to these anime beginners what kind of work DOGDAYS is, what would you do?

Yui Horie: "DOGDAYS" is an anime that gives a sense of travel, with beautiful scenery and tells the adventures of the characters who spend their holidays in a strange world. You don't have to be too nervous when you enjoy this work, it's like following the characters on a trip, and I'm sure you'll be able to relax and relax.

- Is it like enjoying a new encounter in a travel destination?

Yui Horie: That's right! Season 3 also features islands floating in the sky, where the characters meet unexpected mystery characters. By the third season of the series, the world of the work has also become much wider, and the scenery on the island is dominated by forests, giving people a sense of healing, and you will get vitality from it unconsciously. In addition, the girls' clothes in the work are often torn, and the scenes of killing and death are sure to feast the eyes of the audience (laughs).

6. The encounter between the cold Okinawa and the beautiful boy

INTERVIEWER The seaside scene in the MV is reminiscent of summer, but where was it filmed?

Yui Horie: In Okinawa, I wanted to shoot a music video that would not be much different from the cover of the single, so I chose Okinawa, which has a warm climate. However, it was still very cold when I went to shoot at the end of the year (laughs)! Although it was Okinawa, the weather was overcast and very cold (laughs). So don't think I'm wearing short sleeves in the video, just think it's warm or something, but it's actually cold!

- Hahaha (laughs), but despite this, the video gives you a very strong summer atmosphere.

Yui Horie: It's all thanks to the later God editor (laughs).

- I don't think the MV is the same as the lyrics and the anime, it seems to tell a different story, what is going on?

Yui Horie: This is based on the world view of "DOGDAYS", and some fantasy elements are added, mainly to express a summer adventure story.

- Not only adventures, but also beautiful boys!

Yui Horie: It's a handsome guy (laughs). He is a native of Okinawa and is fluent in both English and Japanese.

- He had an unbelievable feeling. He looks like a teenager when you drag him by the hand, but conversely he looks like a handsome young man when he drags your hand forward.

Yui Horie: It's like a goblin, and the final plot says that he turned into sand (laughs). That cute little boy is only six years old this year, and when the director explained it to him, I was worried about whether he understood it. Later, when I watched the music video on the screen, I realized that his acting skills were awesome!

- The atmosphere of this MV is really similar to the previous work "Summer Promise".

Yui Horie: Yes, after all, both songs are theme songs from the "DOGDAYS" series, and they will be more or less similar.

7. Concerts without blanks

- I think you've been busy lately, right?,Because the two-day concert "Yui Horie's Adventure V-School Festival that is being targeted-" will be held soon.

Yui Horie: Hahaha, yes (laughs).

INTERVIEWER Needless to say, I guess it's very tiring and hard (laughs).

Yui Horie: Rehearsal every day! The content was basically decided, and it took us about a year to prepare for the concert, and after countless rehearsals, I was almost confused about what was the highlight and what was not (laughs).

After all, the announcement of the concert was made in May last year. I guess there are a lot of differences from the original idea.

Yui Horie: The basic concept has remained the same since the beginning, but there are more and more small highlights, and the concert is expected to last a lot longer than it was originally (laughs).

- You've held many concerts so far, and they're all about your adventures. When you held the "Adventure" series of concerts, what do you think is the most important thing that you should never give into?

Yui Horie: What the hell is it...... I guess it's because there is no time left blank (laughs). For example, when changing costumes, how can you make the audience feel satisfied during that time, instead of feeling bored? That's where my concert came from. If the audience can see at a glance that "Yui Horie is changing clothes, please be patient", it will prove to be a failure. How can we not leave a gap in time? I need to think about it for a long time every time.

- Instead of having the band play live lyrical music during the scene transition, it's better to have a funny sketch. Is that what you mean (laughs).

Yui Horie: That's what it means (laughs). Let's assume that there is a gap in the space, and if we want to perform a funny sketch, then we need to lay the line first...... In this way, the whole story of the concert was conceived step by step according to the theme of the concert. I hope that the audience will enjoy the whole concert. Although whether we can succeed in doing so this time depends on how well we play on the spot. But for now, at least, we are thinking about whether the audience will be able to enjoy the concert at every moment in the process of thinking and preparing.

INTERVIEWER The "Adventure" series of concerts is very hard every time, have you ever thought about holding a small-scale concert? Just like BillboardLive, it's a concert of less than an hour. In this way, you don't have to think about changing your outfits.

Yui Horie: You're right. Hmm, but I don't think I've missed this opportunity. At the second or third concert of the "Adventure" series, there was a proposal that you had made, but the record executives said, "Wouldn't it be better to have a concert like the previous one?" And the guests were very happy," so I missed the opportunity to hold a small concert. Even if I don't have to change clothes, I guess I'll still be trying to figure out how to fill the gap in time (laughs).
