scp-038 scp-039

Item No: SCP-038

Object Class: Safe

Special Containment Procedures: SCP-038 is to be watered twice daily via an overhead sprayer. If for any reason the sprayer is damaged, personnel are to manually water SCP-038 until the sprayer is repaired. Lighting is provided by a computer-controlled lighting array. Any personnel watering SCP-038 and repairing sprayers, as well as maintenance personnel for lights, must wear hazmat suits to prevent accidental cloning events.

Description: SCP-038 was discovered in 19██ on an abandoned farm in New York. At first it was thought to be an ordinary apple tree. However, upon further investigation, it became clear that SCP-038 produced more than apples, in fact, not even just fruits.

SCP-038 is capable of cloning any object that comes into contact with its bark. Objects that come into contact with the bark grow and mature almost immediately, a process that takes only a few minutes. Previous records indicate that there is a weight limit of 90.9 kg (200 lb) per item that grows. Objects cloned by SCP-038 to date include: apples, oranges, watermelons, eggplants, candy bars, snacks (see Addendum #1), televisions, toasters, laptops, keys (see Addendum #2), chairs, red wine, DVDs, CDs (see Addendum #3), several cats, several dogs, and, some...

Human and animal cloning via SCP-038 is not recommended, as they grow very quickly to the original age of the mother. Most of these clones survive, on average, 2 weeks. Autopsy of the dead clones revealed that they had begun fermentation prior to death.

SCP-038 is currently stored at Site-23 and has no plans to move it at this time.

Addendum #1: Staff have been asked to cease cloning vending machines for sale. (See Document #338-1)

Addendum #2: Staff have been asked to stop cloning their personal belongings. (See Document #338-1)

Addendum #3: Staff have been asked to stop cloning movie or music discs. (See Document #338-1)

Addendum #4: Staff have been instructed to stop cloning canned beer of Miller, Budeweiser, or Foster brands. In addition, his disapproval of the quality of these cloned beers was routinely emphasized. (See Document #338-1b)

Document #338-1: "I'd like to remind all staff that SCP-038 is not, I repeat, not a toy!" It shouldn't be used to clone car keys, movies, music, or vending machine gadgets! If this continues, I'll have to restrict access to SCP-038!"

Document #338-2: It has been noted that SCP-038 is capable of cloning SCP-500 - but the cloned pills are only 30% of SCP-500's efficacy. Also, the chance of a successful cure for a replica decreases with the number of clonings. In 60% of cases of permanent infection, symptoms of infection persist (after taking cloned SCP-500), but further infection is stopped.

Date: 11/08/████

Purpose: Confirmation of the quality limit of cloning: Investigation of the consequences of exceeding the quality limit

Brief Report of Experiment Results: A 400-pound iron ingot came into contact with SCP-038's outer bark. As a precaution, the room has been emptied. The cloned ingots grew at a normal rate, but abruptly stopped growing before they were all complete. Examination of the end of the clonal that has interrupted growth reveals that the end is coarse, closely resembling a miniature bark structure. The iron ingots detached from SCP-038 as in previous experiments, and were subsequently found to weigh 90.91 kilograms, or almost exactly 200 pounds.

Date: 11/08/████

Purpose: Investigation of the cloning of non-living organisms

Experiment Result Briefing: SCP-173 is considered a suitable test subject for this experiment, due to its lack of verifiable vital activity. SCP-173 is introduced into the room by D-class personnel. Upon contact with SCP-038's outer bark, SCP-173 was immediately brought back to its original containment. From the moment of contact, the clone of SCP-173 begins to grow at a normal rate. As with previous experiments, the growth process stopped when the 200-pound limit was reached. In this experiment, cessation occurs after the cloning of the head, right arm, and part of the upper body is completed. D-class personnel were instructed to cut off contact with cloned SCP-173. When the subject finally blinked, no movement was observed on the clone. The lights in the room were turned off and lit again, showing no apparent reaction from the clones. This concludes the experiment.

During the storage of clones of SCP-173, we have observed that some of the clones are in fact in violent postures at a dramatic slow rate. This action continues unaffected by whether or not the clone is observed.

Item No: SCP-039

Object Class: Euclid

Special Containment Procedures: All instances of SCP-039 are to be kept in the Wilderness Observation Chamber-2B at Site-77. At least two (2) security personnel are to monitor the inside and outside of SCP-039's chamber, with shifts changing every six (6) hours. Personnel must enter SCP-039's chambers under the escort of on-site security, and may only enter for research purposes or weekly inspections of containment breaches and prohibited items.

SCP-039-8 has been pregnant since 18/09/20██; Duties for its containment have been transferred to the staff of the Veterinary Observation Wing.

Description: SCP-039 is the designation of twenty-three (23) specimens of the proboscis monkey (Nasalis larvatus) that have undergone radical changes only on an anatomical level. SCP-039 has no eyes or mouth, and only has a nose and attached nasal passages. SCP-039 instances possess a keen sense of hearing and touch, compensating for the lack of vision. They rely primarily on physical contact to perceive objects, and use loud snorts as a means of echolocation to determine orientation. Autopsies revealed that they also had no digestive system; How SCP-039 instances obtain nutrients or, conversely, how they survive without them - remains a subject of research.

Instances of SCP-039 show signs of intelligence, such as communicating through nasal vocalizations, understanding spoken English, and understanding of mechanical complexes. Adult instances have demonstrated the ability to manipulate mechanical tools, and are capable of repairing and fabricating a variety of technical devices, such as disassembling and reassembling internal combustion engines, laying electrical wiring in a small room in an apartment, etc. Testing has shown that SCP-039 instances are more efficient when working alone than in groups, due to the fact that SCP-039 instances often distract from each other.

While working, instances of SCP-039 will occasionally clutch their abdomen and make painful noises. If there is food nearby, they will wipe it on their faces. It has been hypothesized that SCP-039 is the product of a modified normal proboscis monkey, and documents recovered during containment support this hypothesis. (See Addendum SCP-039-A)

SCP-039 is capable of reproduction and pregnancy in the same way as proboscis monkeys; Since the establishment of this document, five (5) instances of SCP-039 have been created. Populations of SCP-039 have shown to be very close-knit, with newborns often being cared for by all capable adult individuals. Neonatal instances possess anatomical anomalies similar to those of other SCP-039 instances, but lack the knowledge possessed by other instances. Parents will teach newborns communication methods and basic skills until they reach the age of six (6) months, after which the other adults will teach them the technical skills.

SCP-039 was recovered from an uninhabited research facility fifty (50) kilometers from the ████████ District, Nevada. Documents recovered during containment indicate that the facility is owned by ██████ █████, and that the company funds research to advance the innate abilities of humans. Twenty (20) instances of SCP-039 reside in the site and maintain the Institute for an unknown length of time. Other documents recovered indicate that there was a project aimed at increasing human intelligence. The project appears to have been cancelled shortly before the company's collapse, and the company's assets were later sold to an unknown organization. Further investigation of the organization that ██████ █████ and received its assets has not yet received important information.

Addendum SCP-039-A Several documents recovered during initial containment appear to illustrate the initial prototype phase of SCP-039's development. Research has begun to recreate the process of creating new instances of SCP-039; However, the damage accumulated in the notes prior to containment has rendered many parts unrecognizable.

…… After removal, their efficiency almost doubled, and that didn't even count the extra time gained from fewer breaks and vacations. In light of this success, we are considering removing the other holes in the body if replacing or missing these parts does not reduce yield.

Wernher watched them work today, noticing that several of them were clutching their bellies. It's as if they're hallucinating that they're hungry and hurt, even though they don't have to eat anymore. Whatever it is, unless it affects productivity.

We try to remove the eye organs and let them work only from memory. After a few inconclusive trials, we were able to get a sample that scored almost as high as the control test. We decided to go ahead with this new protocol and apply it to all samples if it was successful.

Edit: Updates to this article. The tactile sensitivity of most of the samples appeared to be enhanced after the visual was removed, and strikingly, this led to a higher productivity than expected in the subjects tested for the first time. Therefore, we will apply this change to all available samples. A few of them are not very adaptable, but they are still very good at handling spare parts. In the meantime, we've put them in stock.

After the success of the eye incident, Damien suggested that we increase our auditory sensitivity to increase productivity. As long as they stay in the factory, it's fine, there's nothing to hurt your ears here. The test started in about a week.

What a success! After removing vision and the need for food, and enhancing the sense of hearing and touch, we got a total increase of 211% higher than the earliest test subjects. Management has decided to give our department extra time to complete this project. Think about the fact that the project was sold to us as a joke! Oh my God, I feel like I'm dancing in the sky.

Edit: There was a little accident today. One specimen escaped from the cell, taking several tools with it. We put it back in and resealed the cell. Alan said he would check the door again tomorrow.
