Section 508 Lilly regulates people's behavior
Confucius said: During the first ten days of the sacrifice, the king fasts for the first seven days and fasts for the last three days. He also served a man as a corpse (a person who was sacrificed on behalf of the deceased during the sacrifice), and the doctors and priests avoided him when they encountered him. This is to teach people to be respectful to God. 醴 (lǐ) wine is placed indoors, 醍 (tí) wine is placed on the hall, Cheng wine is placed under the hall, thin flavor is placed on top, and thick flavor is placed below, which is to educate people to know respect and humility. Then the rest of the wine and meat were sacrificed, and the whole tribe was gathered for a meal, which was to educate the people to live in harmony. Therefore, the people in the hall take the people in the room as a model, and the people in the hall take the people in the hall as a model. The Book of Songs says: The etiquette is in accordance with the law, and the conversation and laughter are also very measured.
Confucius said: When performing the guest ceremony, every time you enter the door and ascend to the hall, you must be humble to each other; At the time of the funeral, the completion of each ritual means that the deceased is further away from home. After the death of a person, the first thing is to bathe the corpse in the room, then to eat under the south window, then to hold a small gathering in the door, to hold a large gathering in the east step, to stop the funeral at the west step, to move the coffin to the family temple to hold the ancestral memorial, and finally to be buried in the tomb, so as to indicate that the deceased is getting farther and farther away from the living. The Yin people mourned the family of the deceased at the cemetery, and the Zhou people only paid condolences after the family of the deceased returned home from the cemetery, which is to educate people not to forget the deceased. Confucius said: Death is the last major event in life, and the Zhou people's gift of death is relatively complete, so I agree with the Zhou people's approach. In this way, people are regulated, and there are still princes who cannot be buried as scheduled after they die.
Confucius said: After returning home after the funeral, the filial son still insisted on ascending from the west steps to the hall and being hanged in the guest seat. This is to educate people not to forget their loved ones right away. Therefore, the "Spring and Autumn Period" of the Lu State recorded the funeral of the Jin State, saying: The minister of the Jin State, Rick, killed Xi Qi, the son of the monarch of the Jin State, and his monarch Zhuo. In this way, people are educated, and there is a son who kills his father.
Confucius said: Serving the monarch with filial piety and honoring the elders with filial piety is to educate people not to have two hearts. Therefore, the son of the monarch does not seek any official position while the monarch is alive, and can only claim to be the king's deputy when divining on behalf of the monarch. The death of the father and the three years of mourning for the death of the king, and the death of the king for three years are to show the people that the dignity of the king is exactly the same as that of the father, there is no doubt.
When the father was alive, the son did not dare to think that the body was his own, nor did he dare to buy private property, which is to educate people to know the superiority and inferiority. Therefore, the Son of Heaven has no etiquette as a guest in the four seas, because no one dares to be his master. Therefore, when the king arrives at the house of his subordinates, he ascends to the rank of self and ascends the throne in the court, which is to educate the people not to regard their home as their own. Parents are alive and giving things to others, small things are okay, but large items like chariots and horses are not, this is to educate the people not to dare to make their own claims. In this way, the people are educated, and the people still have forgotten their parents and have two hearts for the king.
Confucius said: The gift of meeting is the gift of meeting after the ceremony of meeting. The reason for this is to educate the people to do things first and then accept them. Offering the gift of meeting first and then the gift of meeting will lead the people to be greedy for money. If you don't give in and accept the gift, it will lead to the people fighting. Therefore, when a gentleman gives a gift, if he cannot receive it, he will not accept the gift from the other party. The Book of Changes says: Gain without ploughing, get fertile land without clearing wasteland, fierce. Use this method to educate the people, and the people still value profit and despise doing things.
Confucius said: A gentleman does not take possession of all his interests, but must leave a part to the people. The Book of Songs says: There are handfuls of grain left behind, and here are ears of grain scattered on the ground, which are for the widows to pick up at will. Therefore, when a gentleman is an official, he does not farm, he does not fish when he hunts, he eats what he eats all year round, he does not pursue delicacies from the mountains and seas, the doctor does not kill sheep for no reason, and the soldier does not kill dogs for no reason. The "Book of Songs" says: Harvest and harvest, the leaves have been picked, do not take them by roots. In the past, it was said that the mountain alliance would not forget each other, and it would not be separated from your life and death. Use this method to educate the people, and the people still lose their lives because of forgetting their righteousness and fighting for profit.
Confucius said: Etiquette can be used to prevent people's lust and lust, emphasize the difference between men and women, make them avoid suspicion, and become a discipline for people to observe. Therefore, men and women are not allowed to interact without matchmaking, and they are not allowed to meet without a dowry, because they are worried that there is no difference between men and women. In this way, people are educated, and people still have private associations. The Book of Songs says: What do you rely on to chop wood? It can't be done without an axe. What do you rely on to get a wife? It can't be done without matchmaking. What do you rely on to grow hemp? It is necessary to prepare the acres of land. What do you rely on to get a wife? You must first report to your parents.
Confucius said: Marrying a wife does not marry a daughter with the same surname, this is to emphasize that the same surname is not married. Therefore, when marrying a concubine, if you don't know the concubine's surname, you should divinate it to see if it is suitable. Using this method to educate people, Zhao Gong even married a woman from Wu with the same surname as Lu Guo as his wife, so that when Lu Guo's "Spring and Autumn Period" recorded that Zhao Gong married a woman, he had to hide his wife's surname, but only said that he was from Wu State; When she died, she had to hide her surname, and only said that she was Mencius.
Confucius said: According to the rules of etiquette, men and women do not toast each other when it is not a time for sacrifice. Using this method to educate people, Yanghou also killed Miao Hou and occupied his wife. Since then, the feast of the two kings has abolished the ritual that women must attend.
Confucius said: For the son of a widow, if you don't see that he is very talented, don't make friends with him, because a gentleman should avoid suspicion. Therefore, friends interact with each other, and if the man is not at home, and there is no death, illness and other major events, they will not enter his door. In this way, people are taught that lust outweighs virtue.
